Their debut album, Rest In Violence, is so far my favorite album of 2020.
My husband's dad got sprayed with agent orange in Vietnam and all his kids including my husband got some form of cancer...my husband got brain cancer back in 2011, they have done 7 brain surgeries on him since then, the tumors keep reacurring, it's now 2019 and he is still fighting! Dr's said Agent Orange was to blame for a lot of what's been going on.
There are 4 essential bands from Germany: Sodom , Tankard, Kreator and Destruction. Excellent pick for Sodom. For other bands I would recommend following songs: Kreator - Betrayer Tankard - The Morning After Destruction - Curse the Gods

He's enjoying Slayer the wrong way, they often think lyrics are said almost always from the first person and in their point of view....Slayer rarely did that until God Hates Us All and later. Sodom's best albums : Agent Orange equal with the self titled (2006) / then Code Red / M-16 / Persecution Mania / Better Off Dead. I haven't listened much to stuff after the self titled, but when Bermann joined, he saved the band, they had a couple meh albums after Better Off Dead, which itself wasn't that great, about half the album is okay then the rest forgettable. I hear Bermann left the band before their latest album and EP, but thankfully the guitarist from Agent Orange is the one that came back to replace him. When I worked retail I knew a man called Boom Boom who lost use of his leg to Agent Orange. Believe he was a demolition expert in Vietnam. Cool guy. He died awhile back.

Their music was a combination of Celtic Frost and Venom at the very beginning. In time they developed into a thrash metal band. Agent Orange is their 1989 album. In 1987 with the album Persecution Mania, they started to write songs about the atrocities of war and they do ever since. Singer/founder Tom Angelripper is especially interested in the Vietnam War. In 2001 they had released the album M-16 which is entirely about the Vietnam War.
I went to war in 2004. When I came home I was diagnosed with so many weird illnesses years later. Sometimes I can barely get out of bed. Every soldier I served with is screwed up, a lot have already passed on. War is hell.
My uncle is about to have his kidney, prostate and some lymph nodes removed because he was in the Air Force in Vietnam and was exposed to agent orange. They are hoping that will get rid of the cancer, but something is also wrong with his blood. :(
My uncle also has fought cancer multiple times. Among many other health issues, his cancer just came back this year. All because agent orange. Sorry, about your uncle, hope everything ends up ok.

So Sodom is a clearly thrash metal band, not black metal (for black metal you need to hear Venom, Celtic Frost, etc.) And they rightfully belong precisely to the CLASSIC thrash metal groups, along with Destraction, Kreator and so on. Just yesterday I mentioned how Celtic Frost should definitely be in this week, a band that essentially played thrash, but who influenced Black Metal with what they were doing in the 80's... well this isn't Celtic Frost, but the idea is kind of the same, and Agent Orange is a damn great Thrash album. I actually have a Sodom CD on my desk right now.. not sure why, I have their stuff in digital and who even has a CD Player these days, but hey, it looks good so I keep it around, haha. This leaves only 2 songs left in the "Essentials Week" I presume... so likely no Savatage or Celtic Frost, and definitely no Atheist, Bolt Thrower, Entombed, Edge of Sanity or Gamma Ray (just to name a few). Oh, and also Dark Tranquillity the only of the notable pioneers of Swedish Melodeath that you didn't react to (and the most consistent band among them). Too bad, maybe next time... My Aunt’s spouse, RIP, was exposed to agent orange and had sores on his hands and arms that continually bled and festered. I think that’s what the chorus line “a fire that doesn’t burn” is a reference to. I also think it may be a reference to the selling point of agent orange accomplishing what a fire would in destroying vegetation without having to have an actual fire. But now, after the fact, we realize that the US military should’ve gone through the trouble of burning vegetation instead of using agent orange.
Except for the genre , it's thrash metal, although on their first 2 or so CDs, the atmosphere and visuals are towards evil. But I don't know if it's blackmetal. I started listening to heavier and darker metal with these guys. The CD/ep called in the sign of evil is essential, although almost everything is out of tempo. Ahahahah

Yes - one of THE greatest thrash metal songs of all time. Sodom are one of the German Big Four of thrash (including Kreator, Destruction and Tankard) ... a much more aggressive form of thrash metal than most of their American contemporaries. Check out "Invincible Force" from Destruction's debut full length for some more of this superior (IMO) version of the form.
their early stuff inspired the norwegian black metal scene, but their full length albums were alraedy Thrashmetal from the beginning. Sodom are part of the (so called) Teutonic Big 4, which are Destruction, Kreator, Sodom, and Tankard.

My Aunt’s spouse, RIP, was exposed to agent orange and had sores on his hands and arms that continually bled and festered. I think that’s what the chorus line “a fire that doesn’t burn” is a reference to. I also think it may be a reference to the selling point of agent orange accomplishing what a fire would in destroying vegetation without having to have an actual fire. But now, after the fact, we realize that the US military should’ve gone through the trouble of burning vegetation instead of using agent orange.

Except for the genre , it's thrash metal, although on their first 2 or so CDs, the atmosphere and visuals are towards evil. But I don't know if it's blackmetal. I started listening to heavier and darker metal with these guys. The CD/ep called in the sign of evil is essential, although almost everything is out of tempo. Ahahahah

Yes - one of THE greatest thrash metal songs of all time. Sodom are one of the German Big Four of thrash (including Kreator, Destruction and Tankard) ... a much more aggressive form of thrash metal than most of their American contemporaries. Check out "Invincible Force" from Destruction's debut full length for some more of this superior (IMO) version of the form.
