A Pro's Take on Lenses: Invest in Quality Glass!
Hey everyone,
I usually don't post here, but after watching this video, I felt compelled to share my thoughts. As my son likes to say, I'm an old head. I've been a professional photographer for 26 years and have had a camera in my hand for 49 years. I'm not a TH-camr; I'm a business owner with a studio.
One piece of advice from my mentor, a Master photographer, has always stuck with me: "Marry your lenses and date the camera bodies." In simple terms, don't skimp on glass. A great lens will last for years.
Sure, you can save money with third-party lenses, but that sometimes comes with hidden costs. I own a Sigma 50 Art and an 85 Art, and in the last couple of years, I've had to send them in for repairs, like tightening screws. Meanwhile, my OEM Canon lenses just work. As a working pro, my gear gets banged around, and if it's not made well, you'll know it.
I'm not a Nikon guy, but I've attended the Nikon school twice. That said, mirrorless lenses are no joke. I used to adapt them, but now I own them-it's like night and day.
I had a big shoot this past weekend, a high school graduation with 400+ kids. I rented two RF 85mm 1.2 lenses, and holy guacamole, Batman! They blew my Sigma 1.4 out of the water.
If you're a working pro and charging clients, invest in your tools of the trade. Every lens has a sweet spot, but in a cheap lens, it's much higher than in great glass.
And one more tip: Learn how to light. If you're good, no one will be able to tell you used a flash. The weather might not be consistent, but my Profoto lights sure are.
Good luck and keep shooting!
Karl
Great video, glad TH-cam recommended it! The quality of your audio is fantastic, btw!
Thanks so much!! Glad to hear the audio is good, I work hard on it hahah
Interesting video! It's great to hear that that the dslr glass is working well for you on mirrorless body with the converter. My bank account hates the idea of me starting a new lens collection, so I have been putting off full-frame mirrorless. One of the benefits of mirrorless is supposed to be smaller and lighter cameras. But Nikon especially seems to be going bigger, heavier and more expensive with their lenses. The old "nifty 50" 1.8g is fast, cheap, good and light. Then new 50 1.8 z lens weighs and costs over twice as much and is bigger. I have never heard of a personal brand photographer, but I like the term because it creates clarity about who your client is and what types of images they need. Vignetting and lens distortion are not the same thing, but you make a great point about how they would stand out in a bad way when viewed on a website. I never considered that before.
Congratulations on the views (8.6k atm)! Good content! Love the branding also!
Thank you so much! Can’t take credit for the branding - I worked with an amazing designer who created it for me!
This is solid advice. When I started getting into photography, I used to think you had to chase the best, most expensive gear. After wasting some money, I realized I first needed to identify what my niche was going to be. After I did that, I could then build a kit that was best for that niche. I shoot portraits and events, so I have mid-range zooms and a couple of primes. In my opinion, you can work professionally with 2 lenses, 3 if you want to add an 85 or 50 prime.
Thanks so much! When I shoot events I typically also rent a 70-200, but since I only do those 1-2 times per year it doesn’t make sense for me to build it into my kit. If I get more into it I would definitely consider it!!
@@emilykimco I generally shoot with an RF 28-78mm 2.0 and an old EF 70-200 2.8.Usually covers every situation I encounter. Keep up the great content!
Thank you for such great information
I agree with your sentiment on inexpensive lenses. Today's standards in lens design are so high that you don't need to buy top of the line gear to get professional results.
Gracias por este video. Lo estaba esperando
Great presentation! Thank you! 💕
Glad you enjoyed it! 😄
Great job on the video. 👍 Especially the point about lens distortion in regard to branding style photography.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent video 😊!
Thank you very much!
Great Video, Good common-sense photography
I have z50 and still using the 50mm 1.8g, crops make it around 75mm, so my gol is a full frame z5 next year
Enjoyed your video. Well done. Subscribed.
Thanks so much!! Welcome!
Great insight and brief explained. I totally agree. Having my nifty-fifty as my priority lense 99% of the time on my mirrorless.
Thanks so much! I like to keep it simple haha
Nice video only lens solution is 24-120 F4 is nice choice including 50 + 85mm
Having a zoom lens means you can choose where to place your camera instead of a fixed distance when using prime lenses. If it's a narrow place, use the wide end. If it's a wide place, use the tele end. And for video recording, you don't need a fast aperture lens such as f1.4 or f1.8 unless filming in low light situations.
Totally! That’s why I prefer it for video, but for photo the advantage of being able to shoot at 1.4/1.8 is great for me
The shallow depth of field with F1.4 or F1.8 is still a desirable and sought after look when filming.
😂😂😂 current technology: for prime 1.4 is the minimum, for zoom 2.8 is the minimum if u are serious into filming or photography.
Great video and content perfect sound as well A-plus
Thanks so much!!
Hi just stumbled upon the video. Are you sure your sigma 35mm has that much lens distortion? It tests very low for optical barrel distortion in tests. Sounds more like you're talking about perspective distortion when you get in closer to your subjects relative to surrounding elements.
Hey! Perhaps perspective distortion is right - as you can probably tell by this video, I’m not really big into the technical terms lol. I’ll look more into this - thanks!
You might also like the 135mm. You can get a old manual focus 135mm Minolta f2.8 for about $50.00 dollars plus a adapter I bought one years ago I think for $15.00 dollars.
Perspective distortion from a wide angle lens (strictly a function of the angle of view) is not the same thing as geometric distortion and vignetting introduced by lens elements. 50 and 85 mm can also have lens distortion (cheap 85's often tend towards pincushion) and most of them vignette wide open.
Correct. There are lots of tutorials in which the "teachers" get this wrong. And so you can see how they really don't know what they are talking about.
Perspektive distortion comes from the closer distance to your subject and has nothing to do with "flaws" of the lens like vignetting or lens distortion.
It's always annoying when you see people giving tutorials and getting the basics wrong.😳😵💫😥
Thanks for the correction! As you can tell by the video, I’m not super into technical terms. But yup I meant perspective distortion!
@@elledriver3509very cool! Thanks!
Whats personal brand photography 🤔
Love this question!! Personal brand photography is essentially taking marketing photos for small business owners, usually solopreneurs. Brand photography in general has a lot of overlap with commercial work :)
Isn't the natural view of the eyes 42.5 mm? The 40 mm lense is actually the closest to what the eye sees. 35 and 50 mm are a little bit wide and a little bit tighter respectively.😂
@@gregorybeale sure, I’m not big on precision. I mention the 50mm because it’s more commonly talked about and the lens that I have, so it’s the closest of my kit :)
Very well spoken. Subbed.
Thanks so much!! Welcome!
I've owned all the lens you have and now I own all the expensive Z trinity and several 1.8 z primes. There is a difference but it's all personal preference and budget. The F mount lenses had a warmer tone and the Z are cooler I think in general. I have kept one F mount lens the 58mm 1.4 G. Its got a look for portraits especially B&W that has a ton of character and its super light. The 50 1.8z mount is spectacular and fairly inexpensive give it a try if you want try one of the Z lenes. Good luck with your channel!
Thanks so much for the rec! Definitely good to know that the Z mounts are worth it!
Hello Emily, I just found your channel. Nice video! Just subscribed.
Thanks so much! Welcome 😄
As hobby photographer I dosen't want to spend much on camera gear, and I also love manual lenses, I love use the Tokina 35-105mm f3.5 lens. I do have Olympus 75mm f1.8 but I just love the feeling of the Tokina lens so I use it much more and I use it on both Olympus and Sony medium format body
Ooh great recs! I also loved the Tokina - that’s the macro lens I couldn’t remember the name of
@@emilykimco The Tokina 35-105mm f3,5 has "macro mode" but only in 35mm, but not a "real" macro lens. I use Tokina 75-300mm f5,6 Macro for macro photos. Take care of you cute photographer
At 2:04 you mention the 50mm is what we see with our eyes. If you use a crop camera would you take that into consideration? You would use a 35mm for that natural look?
It's about the angle of the lens. A nifty fifty for a full frame would instead be 350mm for an 8"*10" large format camera, or 25mm for micro4/3rds.
Lens angles are usually specified across the frame diagonal, so horizontal and vertical angles will differ depending on aspect ratio.
Yeah I think a 35mm full frame lens on a crop camera would be similar! I’m not that into the technical specs so it would be worth double checking :)
Just giving you a heads up filters can give you a ghosting orb effect if you are shooting when in the same direction as the sun. I got some of these artifacts in wedding photos so I removed my filters. Its rare to get them but it does happen. So now I just put my lens shades on for protection.
Ooh good to know! I have a filter on my 50mm but only because I lost my lens cap lol. I usually remove it on photoshoots but sometimes I forget
@@emilykimco I would but a lens cap you don't want to mess up the screw threads from removing it to much.
I am thinking it depends on what you are shooting. How about bird or wildlife photography?
For sure! I don’t shoot bird or wildlife photography so I wouldn’t know :)
Since you have a Sony camera Sony does make a A-Mouunt adapter and the Minolta 135mm f2.8 with auto focus goes for about $130 dollars.
I would have just updated my first comment but it's really hard on mobile browser.
Oh this is great! I don’t shoot a ton of product work but will def keep this in mind if I need another macro, thanks!
@@emilykimco You can turn any lens into macro by getting extension tubes. Also there are macro filters you just screw onto the front of your lens and you have macro. The third way if you reverse your lens by just turning it around. I don't like this way that much but there are screw on filter adapters for example you screw in a adapter to the front of your lens to have a Nikon Z-Mount. I might be fine for small lens but I don't like the idea of that weight on the filter threads.
This is a mill sub channel in the making.. I can see it..
Hi, Love your video, there is not 85mm F1.4 Z lens yet
This video is a perfect example of why pro photographers/videographers don't need 50 11 (a lot) of lenses for work. 2 or 3 get the job done.
agree,, but im mostly on 85..
Nikon Z5 on sale $996 USD, and 40mm f2 lens $277 USD is pretty low priced for full frame. Excellent camera and decent lens. Add 50mm lens for around $600, which is sharp and you have a great setup. For portrait, you could add the 85mm. In regard to F stops, when including more information in a setting, I would say F4 to F11, with F5.6 being something where in the wider lenses offers more in focus. The F1.2 to f1.8 range might have eyes in focus and the nose and ears thrown out of focus in closer shots. Really, it is not needed. Sweet spot on the lens might be F5.6, or even F8. Try the F5.6 or F6.3. OK, you might already, but others reading this might be hooked on wide-open. Wide-open is great for use without proper amount of light.

Thanks so much for the rec! Many have mentioned the Z5. I typically only go above f2.8 when shooting with large groups of people, but I do try to be adventurous and experiment with things outside of my comfort zone :)
Me being a wedding photographer: "I'm F'ed 😖"
This is the way. I do portraits and use FD and AI lenses on a Sony body
Yessss love it!!
Get the ZF ma'am, trust me it's night and day...I don't even use native lenses, all adapted..had the Z6ii and I didn't realize how many shots I've missed with it, it was frustrating
Oh really? I haven’t had any issues with it! I’ll keep that in mind thanks for the rec
only need one lens,tamuron 35-150 F2-2.8.and in future.we need 28-150 f1.8-2.8.that's all.
I understand there should be no unnecessary waste of money, but there are other ways to save money. You purchase the outstanding 50 1.8 Z for around $500 used. It would be less bulky than the F mount 50 1.4 and the Z adapter. Just saying.
Fair point! Since I already had the 50mm F mount I didn’t see a reason to upgrade. I’m sure I will one day but it’s been fine for me 😄
Big kiss to Emily!
"Stop down" to 1.4? Stop down means to make the aperture smaller!
She’s a pro😂
@@Burritosarebetterthantacoscool! Thanks!
like I said in the video, I am not into super technical terms. You get the gist of what I’m saying oops lol
You loose all the AF for the fun catching moment
I haven’t had this experience in personal brand photography! I don’t use this setup for events, just for portrait work. I use my Sony for events so I never miss a moment
I really like your earrings. Are those planets?
Thanks! They are polymer clay earrings that I got from a maker on Instagram - I cannot for the life of me find the account of the maker though 😅
first like
"You don't need bla bla lenses... But I upgraded a perfectly fine body"? ;)
I upgraded from the D750 to Z6ii for video purposes :) I kept it for a while! But then i booked my first video only gig and built my Sony upgrade into the bid.
Im sorry i use fast pro nikon lenses because theyre absolutely brilliant super fast super sharp save lots of sensor cleaning , which is why i ditched my primes in a bag, and 50mm isnt standard its slightly wide than human perception , its actually 70mm thats standard [Theres a good reason theres a 70mm at either end of each pro lens!] 70mm is what human vision percieves as standard without parralax error or movement dirrerence
All your client have to be freeze…
