Thanks, very helpful. I've been using haiku as a preferred poetic medium for many years now. Doesn't hurt that I live a couple of miles from where the U.S. Haiku guru lived (Nick Virgilio). Over the years I've abandoned the strictures of syllables and moved more to a formal storytelling ideal. I want a tight three lines, three separate thoughts. First is an idea or image. Second is an image that may or may not seem connected to the first. The third line is my punch to the gut --- a terse image that cements the first two together and makes the whole thing a cohesive story. I recently wrote an essay on autumn, and in it, I used this haiku: Leaves of true color Memories pressed between pages A book of life -Brilliant Bill
There are two sections in the International Matsuyama Photo Haiku Contest in Japan: English and Japanese. It is stated that the 5-7-5 size is not mandatory for photo haiku to be sent to the English section.
I understand that poems translated From Japanese will often not be the proper format in English, but I still think that the 5-7-5 format should be followed if your intent is for it to be spoken or read only in english. While the structure of our language may not be syllabilic, I think think the sounds made when reading the 5-7-5 format evokes the best feeling. If you've experimented with other structures though, I'd be very interested in hearing about them.
