  • Details about the last part of the build - the media beds which are used for bio-filtration! There's still a lot of work to do but this is enough to get the system up and running.

    Rob, I found a product called Blue Max, its a paintable water based non toxic rubber. Iv'e found it to be pretty handy stuff. It can't take UV light over years, but water helps with that. In all the things you do it might have an application somewhere.

    Another thing you could add is Underground Earth temp heating and cooling system using the constant underground temperature to cool in the summer and heat in the winter

    You could use pvc pipe as clamps for the liner. less work and easier to fix later.

    I would have centered that auto siphon. I have made several large beds and if the siphon is to one end the bed will never drain 100%. The water will be high on the opposite side especially once roots start to take hold.

    • @Bigelowbrook
      @Bigelowbrook  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It should be on the opposite side so you have a complete exchange of water and it will minimize the change of any anaerobic zones. If by some change the roots were that thick the bed would just flood over and drain through the overflow.

    What do you recommend for large commercial based aquaponic system : media beds or moving bio filter?
    Also since the media beds take some time fill and then drain off, does this create a time when the deep water bed are not fed with water

    and if we use the media bed as biofilters is there a need to have the dwc bed in the same system?

    I have two 500 gallon fish tanks similar to you and just finished a fishless cycle toady with the first fish. I added 50 Tilapia and it's so exciting. I copied your spray bar design and I quite like the results. However, it gets the volume of the tank water spinning pretty good. I am not sure if this is a good thing for the fish or if I should provide some structure to give the fish an escape from the constant spinning current.

    • @Bigelowbrook
      @Bigelowbrook  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you probably don't want the water spinning too fast, just enough to keep things moving a bit. Even if some of the debris along the bottom isn't moving, as the fish swim by it or hit it, it will slow work it's way towards the center.

    • @9squares

      @@Bigelowbrook Thank's for the advice. I have taken it and slowed down the merry-go-round. Now I am getting into a ph issue. It keeps gradually climbing up to 8.7 now. I suspect my river rock media (even though I tested it first) or possibly my concrete DWC. The DWC is lined with a concrete waterproofing substance but this may be inadequate. I have been trying lime juice while I wait for phosphoric acid and a GH/KH test kit to arrive. My hope is that I can get it down with acid and the increased vegetation will maintain it at a lower level as the system grows. This may be a vain salvage attempt and I need to install either a plastic liner in the DWC and/or spring for Hydroton.

    • @Bigelowbrook
      @Bigelowbrook  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@9squares citric acids will kill your bacteria and shouldn't be used. If you have to add acid, use muratic acid (diluted). It will be a futile attempt unless you know what the cause of the high pH is. It's probably your media.

    • @9squares
      @9squares 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bigelowbrook Thanks for the heads up on citric acid. I am hearing both sides on that one, many say it will harm your bacteria and others say "hog wash" they have been doing it for years. I am in very rural Thailand and it's all I have available for a few days. I thought I would experiment with small amounts and see what happens. Interesting that you suspect the media over the DWC. I was afraid of that. I have looked high and low for expanded shale but short of importing, I can't find it. Expanded clay pellets are available but they are quite dear.

    I don't like using gravel because all of my friends that have used gravel in her aquaponics always had problems with ph they could never get it to stabilize between 6.5 and 6.8 it always would stabilize at 7.2 and then they would have to add stuff to adjust it and then it would do the same thing again this happened with a couple of different friends of mine until I got them to swap out their gravel with the fired Hydro clay balls or volcanic rock basically neutral media that has no chance of leaching anything out to affect the pH also when I was talking about the air injection I'm talking about something different than an AirStone I found the air stones where are clogged up and eventually have to be replaced I will send you a link of a video when I'm finished with the air injection I'm talking about

    • @Bigelowbrook
