    I got one of those in my garage for the last 11 years getting ready to rebuild it. Removed brake drum and yoke. I all ready put in the 4" ext tail housing from a car, removed the ball bearing ext tail housing. Case is also extra thick. No need to change output shaft. As always great video. Thanks.

      @@nickstransmissions Nick, Quick question, I have a straight cut planet gears front & rear straight cut planets gears from a Th475 trans can it be used in 4l80e are they interchangeable ?

    • @nickstransmissions

      Depends on what year 4L80E...I think they are usable up to 1996 units but not 100% sure so you'll have to research definitively. 97+ you will need 4L85E straight cut gear sets and retro to 1997-2000 as a complete service pack from center support on back.
      Not sure there's any real benefit unless you are doing some super HP or HD build...

    I've always passed these up because of the big drum brake on the back. Now I have something new to add to my collection list....

      Yea, they are pretty cool and great for real serious HD applications.

    Definitely a great builder.I’m surprised it doesn’t have aluminum pistons…Thanks for sharing your knowledge bud..!

    You have a casting in the case for an extra pump bolt. Can you drill and tap in and likewise, drill through the pump for extra fastener?

    • @nickstransmissions

      You don't need to drill any extra holes, in fact all that does is create more risk for you without any tangible benefit. Keep the pump and case as-is if it came that way and a check of pump casting numbers in the ATSG manual or elsewhere doesn't show a mis-match between pump and case...The only thing you really can't do is install an 8 bolt pump into a 6 bolt case as you risk leaks at the two unoccupied bolt hole locations.
      The exception to this is if you were doing something really high performance with tons of horsepower then an 8-bolt pump will be more optimal.

    Hello Nick. My car uses TH400. She turns on drive for a long time. Reverse is also long. What could be the problem?
    I completely forgot, there is a second problem, a strong buzzing noise in park and neutral. The sound is similar to a power steering pump.
    As soon as you put on any gear, the sound disappears or becomes quieter. I previously changed the oil pump in the transmission, but it did not give any results. Could it be the torque converter?

    • @nickstransmissions

      That could be any number of things but If you had the trans apart, did you overhaul it and replace everything that should be, including the detent solenoid? I'd first check that firs - it may be stuck on which would result in a no 2-3 upshift as well as the buzzing noise...

    • @promobass77

      @@nickstransmissions I only changed the oil pump.

    • @nickstransmissions

      I see...I would have overhauled the unit while it was out - this way you know it's 100% good to go. Unless the pump change was to swap pumps on a fresh rebuild because you determined the pump as originally installed was no good...

    How much do you charge to rebuild a th400 and how many hours does it take you if you don’t mind me asking.

    • @nickstransmissions

      I don't track my hours spent so these numbers are ballpark but it usually takes me about 30-40 minutes to do a tear down, 2-2.5 hours of cleaning, inspection and prep (including bushing r/r) and about 3-5 hours in assembly, all of which depends on what kind of build I'm doing...I don't want to share specific pricing here as it varies per build requirements/profile and (as of late) inflationary pressures on parts.
      As always, thank you for watching!

    DO CASE SAVERS REALY WORK OR CAN THEY DO MORE DAMAGE THAN GOOD

    • @nickstransmissions

      Hey man, please don't type in all capital letters...I respond to most of my commenters within 24 hours so I'll see it if you post it and respond...Otherwise, it's actually hard to read when everything is in caps. Thanks in advance.
      Case savers for this transmission work though I prefer the Sonnax versions as they enable you to keep the manual second band active.

    Must inspect the gears really well the washers have wear issues.

    • @nickstransmissions

      Yep, absolutely....If unsure its best to just rebuild the planetary carriers, especially on one of these transmissions.

    • @nickstransmissions

      I'll add (for you or anyone else that's reading) that mine are "borderline" and will have them rebuilt w/new washers, spacers and needle bearings though it will be done at a later date.
