There are no Hindu customs shown in this video.

    • @SKGGG

There are no Hindu customs in this video. Sri Lanka is a Sinhalese Buddhist country. Tamils are a very small minority in Sri Lanka. Vogue Jewellers is a Sinhalese Buddhist owned business and this advertisement is only showing Sinhalese Buddhist customs as the vast majority of Sri Lankans are Sinhalese Buddhists.

      Not hindu but somewhere western.

    • @infinite5795

@@SKGGG but, tying of thaali/necklace, piercing of earrings at 3-4 years of child, wearing gold necklaces, panigrahan/ putting water on the hands of husband and wife is exclusive Hindu custom and comes under the 16 compulsory samskaras of a Hindu person. Wonder why Sinhalese don't have anything Buddhist of their own?

What S.G. replied to you is not fully correct. Sri Lanka is a diverse, multi cultural, multi racial, multi religious and multi lingual island steeped in a rich history, folklore and was also a Portuguese, Dutch and British colony from 1505 until independence in 1948. The main races in order of population are the Sinhalese (who are mainly Buddhist by faith and speak mainly Sinhala), the Tamils (who are mainly Hindu by faith and speak mainly Tamil), the Moors (who are mainly Muslim by faith and speak mainly Sinhala, Tamil and some speak Arabic or a combination depending on where they live), the Malays (who are mainly Muslim by faith and speak mainly Malay, Sinhala, Tamil or a combination depending on where they live), the Burghers (who are mainly Christian and can be Roman Catholic, Protestant or other Christian denomination depending on whether their ancestry is Portuguese, Dutch or British mixed with Sinhalese or even one of the other races and they speak mainly English, Sinhala, Tamil or a dialect of one of the other European languages such as Portuguese Creole, etc), the Afrikaans (mixed Sinhalese with East African follow mainly Sinhalese and trying to retain their African roots too). Lastly the Veddhas are the indigenous race and some have mixed into Sinhalese society but those living according to their traditions speak their own language and worship a spiritual faith of their own that is influenced by the natural forests they live in. Over many years the different races have mixed their language, religion, folklore, cuisine and cultural habits have crossed over. Depending on where they live on the island, the communities they have mixed with, their class or caste, many have changed religion and can also speak other languages. For example there are Christian Sinhalese and Christian Tamils. The well educated are also speaking in English fluently at home. Tamils living down south or in the capital Colombo can speak fluent Sinhala. The video is showing a Sri Lankan, Sinhalese, Buddhist family who are probably Govigama caste and Kandyan. Govigama are the highest caste who are land owners. Kandy was the old capital during royalty and only Kandyan men will wear that dress for their wedding. The osariya worn by the bride is worn only by Sinhalese women (in English known as the Kandyan sari as it originated in Kandy). Over time weddings of various races and religions are mixing old traditions with new traditions and some share traditions. For example the Tamils will also follow some of the same cultural traditions. Even the Moors, Malays and Burghers will have very similar weddings. However, this video is showing strong Sri Lankan, Sinhalese, Buddhist, Kandyan traditions. It is wrong to say that the Tamils are a small minority as they are the largest minority and the others are smaller in the order I gave you. Everyone on the island has equality but there are still pockets of racism hence why someone has given you a biased and not fully accurate answer. The Sinhalese do not rule the island. They are the majority race and it is mainly Sinhalese, Buddhist culture that dictates politics and tourism. There was a war in Sri Lanka between the Sinhalese and Tamil from 1983 to 2009 due to racism and politics where both fought for their rights. Sri Lanka has had many different names since ancient times given by different races. In 1972 it became the Socialist Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka.
