  • Have you ever had smoke coming out of your pellet hopper on a Pit Boss or Traeger Pellet smoker? If so, you may have done some damage to a small plastic motor mount for the auger. Here is a quick and inexpensive fix and better than the original design, if I do say so myself.
    Here is what we used in this video:

    Didn’t see anybody make the comment yet but that melted plastic was not put there by the factoryto hold the motor. It was a nylon bushing that went in the small tube just behind the auger. It melted during one of your last burnback fire. The motor normally just sits there supported only by gravity. After the fire melted your bushing out, it left enough play on the auger shaft to allow the motor to turn all the way around. Make sure you purchase another bushing and replace it. It takes all the load of the pellets pushing forward instead of the shaft of the motor.

      Wow. Thank you so much John. This is very helpful and makes a ton of sense. Do you know or happen to have a link to where you can buy one of the bushings for these?

    • @johnkorda8413
      @johnkorda8413 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason I knew that was the bushing right off the bat is because I had the exact same thing happen on my camp chef grill. I thought the same thing at first, what the heck is all this melted plastic stuff. Didn’t occur to me that they would use plastic on the end of an auger that feeds wood into a fire. The first two gears in the heated auger motor were also plastic and were melted at the bottom in the gear case on the auger motor.
      I got my bushing straight from the camp chef. It was the least expensive of all the options I looked at. Not sure if pit boss uses the same size bushing but you might want to call the product support for your grill. They might send you one under warranty.
      A search for “pit boss auger bushing” should get you close to what you’re looking for.

    I got a PitBoss from the neighbor who upgraded. The unit had been sitting for awhile and the pellets were nasty in the bin and auger shaft. Replaced the control panel and cleaned it all out (new learning curve). Pellets will need attenton in future do to humid area.
    I was curious about the motor mount and was suprised something like this was not factory, this one had done a spin or two...
    Used your meathod and working great!

    I have to say that the Pit Boss Pro Series 1100 was a Christmas gift to me 3 years ago and it has been the bane of my existence. I have taken it apart to free a blocked anger more times than I care to remember. The thermostat has malfunctioned causing he fire pot to fill and overheat causing gaskets to melt, portions of the barrel to become white or and bake the finish off and barrel heat diffuser to delaminate. The inability to dial in temperatures less than 50 degrees at a time is a design flaw. I am waiting for the snow to stop here in VA today to drop in a replacement motor and have just put in a 10 gauge steel diffuser to hopefully fix the 125 degree swing in temps I get from left to right. My Oklahoma Joe offset charcoal barrel using the minion method has returned as my go to method of low and slow cooks. The Pit Boss cooks a good burger or bbq chicken

    • @Svdreamchaser
      @Svdreamchaser  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow. You had your fair share of problems with it. I’ve had a few with one improper shut down that overheated the fire pot and melted the bushing on the auger drill bit. I didn’t wanted to secure the motor better because I felt like it was a little too loose so I built a motor mount to hold the motor more secure. But other than that I haven’t had any real problems short of when the hurricane hit everything and it soaked and got wet and clogged up so I had to take it all apart and at that point in time the motor on the blower fan was damaged, but it’s hard to blame Pit Boss with this thing sitting in 48 hours 150 mile an hour winds, and 30 inches of rain. Glad to hear the Oklahoma Joe it’s been a winner for you. I’m not used one of those yet.

    Great video !! I just had a self inflicted mess myself. What began as an auger jam but went straight downhill from there. You mentioned alot of the issues I faced in this video.
    I dropped the pellet box and in doing so (because the wires were wire wrapped pretty tightly) ended up pulling a wire out from the board which went to the probe.
    Once I pulled the auger and removed the jam, I plugged it in and heard “pop”, what I at first thought was just the 5amp fuse ended up being a fried board due to the bare wire from the probe I’m assuming.
    I ordered a new board and replaced it ($50), got everything plugged back up and it fired up but the auger was not turning, the cooling fan for it was. As a mechanic I knew just what I was facing. I took off the auger motor and opened it up. Yep, broken teeth on the gears creating a “dead spot” 🤦🏻‍♂️ I ordered a new auger motor ($25) and will be replacing it.
    Bottom line here was my negligence in removing all the pellets after each burn created the jam due to high humidity or moisture making it into the auger tube. I delayed shutting it down thinking the auger would eventually turn with me poking the jammed pellets free. In that time the gears were tearing themselves apart. Lesson learned !! $75 to get me back up and running didn’t seem like a bad sacrifice though.
    The loosely connected auger motor had me wondering as well. I was thinking, did they purposely do this so it would have some give in such circumstances as an auger jam ? With the motor mounted so tightly now wouldn’t the gears take the immediate brunt of any malfunction ? And/or the auger pin ?
    I still believe it’s a good idea. Thank you and I love the video !!

    • @Svdreamchaser
      @Svdreamchaser  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow. Very interesting and similar to my experience (short the loose wire, that sucks that it fried the control board). To your point 75$ isn’t horrible in the grand scheme of a $700 grill. That said I have learned a few things after this experience. The white blob i removed thinking it was a stopper or mount for the motor was actually a melted bushing that goes in the auger sleeve. It was like a $5-10 part so well worth it. Also you likely now know this but I didn’t see you mention it so wanted to point it out. With the motor off you can remove the auger and clean up any wet or burned pellets in the tube that may have been preventing it from turning. Thanks for the nice words on the video and glad you got yours up and running. I need to spent the money in a new board at some point because I can no longer read the display in really bright sunlight but another day another job. Lol

    • @jimmunhall
      @jimmunhall ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah, I pulled out the auger and bushing and cleaned the auger tube very good with a brush attached to a drill 😂
      I feel like I could totally rebuild one of these things now if I had to, I think I’m already halfway there. Mine is a 820D but they are all pretty my the same mechanically.

    • @tyjoseph5440
      @tyjoseph5440 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jimmunhall I know it's been a year, but I recently had an auger jam on my 820D which, I presume, stripped the gears in the electric motor. I ordered and replaced the motor today but, just like you did, managed to let a loose wire contact a part of the grill, causing some sparks and resulting in a non functioning grill. The 5x20 fuse if shot so I'll throw a replacement in and hope for the best but suspect I'll need a new board as well.
      The motor does seem to kind of hand from the auger a bit and I'm wondering, if you've added this mount has there been any issues and if you'd recommend it? Thanks

    • @Svdreamchaser
      @Svdreamchaser  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I hope so too. This one got me 2 times since I have had my grill. I think what causes this is not having the firepot cleaned of ashes and it allows the pellets to be sitting too close to the auger feed drop in the firepot. But I agree, there is something they can likely do to improve this.

    • @Svdreamchaser
      @Svdreamchaser  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes you could absolutely have used a longer bolt with a nit on the bottom. I did it this way because I wanted the part i turned or removed to be on top for ease of maintenance so I used a shorter bolt into a female to female connector. Different sizes were just because I used the bolts i had handy :).

  • @modaman2
    @modaman2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've seen on yours and other videos where all of the wires are disconnected. The only disconnect you need to make is the red power leads to the motor. Additionally, there is no need to remove the entire bottom grill of the hopper. The four screws on the side and the 2 on the bottom closest to the side of the grill will suffice. Mine had a little more play than I liked so i just super glued some washers to the plate under the motor

    • @Svdreamchaser
      @Svdreamchaser  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a great point. The first time I took mine apart several of the wires were all bundled together with tie wraps, and I had to take the bottom gray off to cut the tie wraps that were holding the wires bundled. I think it’s now just habit that I take the bottom grate off, disconnect all the plugs, and then unscrew it from the side of the grill. But you bring up a great point if you’re careful, you can certainly do that without worrying about damaging any of the wires. I like have any extra room so I think I’ll probably keep doing it this way just because it gives me a little bit more working space especially when I’m not sure where everything plugs in and unplugs

    • @Svdreamchaser

    Great video. Uh...just asking? Did that plastic (that melted, prompting the metal bracket mod) serve to prevent a potential ground out (in the event of a short) to rest of metal grill body? Shock risk? Add some hi-temp "caulk" between metal to metal contact? I'm not a electrician. So maybe nothing. Just asking

    • @Svdreamchaser
      @Svdreamchaser  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really good question. I don’t think that was the reason because it didn’t isolate the motor from the frame of the grill but rather just globes around the back half of the motor but to be candid I never thought of that. I am just considering it now based on your comment. Luckily I have all of this plugged into an outdoor gfci so think that any short would trigger an immediate cut off of the plug power but really good point for sure and something others should consider doing anything like this for themselves.

    • @BMVLifestyle
      @BMVLifestyle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, the new models don’t even have that plastic. There is now a hard plastic bushing in the auger insert area to keep the auger and mirror in line.
      The motor now just torques against the base loosely.
      Edit: that melted plastic was the bushing 😅

    Question. I just bought a 1100 pro combo. Just put it together today. The auger doesn't turn. I primed it and got fire. However the auger still won't turn. So I took off the bottom plate to look at the connection. I see the little white fan from your video. It wasn't turning. I pushed it a little and there it goes. Fan moving auger moving. Problem solved? No. When auger stopped moving it won't restart unless I got under and give fan blade a push then again as long as the auger light is on when I push the fan I get auger movement. Ideas? Or just see what the warranty will cover.?

    • @Svdreamchaser
      @Svdreamchaser  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If it is new I would take the warranty as something doesn’t sound right. It almost sounds like the motor has a dead spot in it and spinning it by hand gets it moving past that “dead” spot.

    • @Svdreamchaser
      @Svdreamchaser  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The blower fan? You may want to pull it apart and see if you have any wires that may be bumping up against the motor or blades. My auger also made a tapping sound and it was the motor and where it mounts to the base. It was mounted in plastic or something and it would lift up a corner of the motor as the auger rotated and then tap when it came back down. It made the noise about once every few seconds. You may want to try that.

Thanks for another great video (trying your smoked cream cheese this week lol)!!!!

    • @Svdreamchaser
      @Svdreamchaser  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was very specific about the gap between the motor and where I draw the holes because of the width of the barrel nut connector. I wanted to make sure that I didn’t do it so close that there wouldn’t be room for that barrel nut to actually touch the side of the motor to help hold it securely in place. I hope that makes sense

    What about a u-bolt or shackle bolt?

    • @Svdreamchaser
      @Svdreamchaser  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I chose to go with a different route to Bolt on a bracket mainly because of the round end of a ubolt. I was a little bit worried that it might stick up to tall above it and only be holding the motor on those corners where the circular part of the ubolt touch the square frame of the motor. It would probably work I just want a different path.

    What’s the green wire for?

      Assuming I know what part of the video your seeing it, I believe all the ones you see in this video is the ground wires. There are several that are connected at the chassis screws.

    The solution is way easier. Open your raincap so it can breathe.

      What is the "RainCap? you mentioned?

      @@Svdreamchaser on the right side, it keeps rain out of the smoke stack.

      @goocherrific oh. Yes the smoke stack. It is open and this was really a problem with me not cleaning the fire pit out so they smolders to high up off the bottom and caught the auger pellets on fire or smolder. Completely my fault.

    They make a bracket you can buy for this exact reason about $20

      Pit boss doesn’t make it but some guy does. I just installed it on mine. I had a similar issue with my auger constantly being jammed

    I'm just guessing, but I think the free floating motor is by design, because there is a certain amount of inherent wobble in the auger shaft. The free floating motor is allowed to move to compensate for the auger wobble. If you watch the motor, you actually see it move in and out as the auger wobbles.

      True but I later found out that plastic “Base” was actually the melted bushing.

    My question is if I'm going to pay that kind of money for a grill, why in the heck would I want to do? The upgrade is myself to me. It's shoddy craftsmanship for sure. I'm not buying that grill now, but that guy did do a great job of upgrading the motor mounting situation. I guess we're going to look at other barbecue grills for sure

      I think you’ll find the quality here is similar to many other manufacturers. This was just a mod by which upgraded and make it a little bit more secure. This grill has worked great for us us and still something we use multiple times every week now for over three years.

    That plastic is a melted bushing. Not a mount

      100% correct. Someone pointed that out and I have since scraped that old blob out and replaced it with this new bushing. YAOAWE Auger Motor Bushing... amzn.to/3JSF62L
