- Operated by a troupe of Italian puppeteers, it took three people to bring the 10-inch-tall character to life: two to manipulate him, and one to create his voice. The puppet stood in a special black art stage with black velvet curtains, designed to absorb as much ambient light as possible, which helped hide the puppeteers, who were also dressed in black camouflage clothing from head to toe. Each puppeteer operated a different part of Gigio's foam rubber body by using several wooden dowel rods (also painted black). The illusion was quite convincing, since unlike traditional hand puppets, Topo Gigio could actually appear to walk on his feet, sing, and make subtle hand gestures. Careful lighting and TV camera adjustment made the "black art" illusion perfect for the television audience.

I love Topo Gigio! When we were litttle (I was 10 in 1965) we were allowed out of bed to come downstairs to watch him on TV.

As a little girl I loved watching him on TV. He was such a cutie! Believe it or not but I still love puppets! 😊
Haven't seen him since I was a little kid, on the Ed Sullivan Show. It is still impressive today to see his movements. That's the first time I saw the puppeteers.

What happy memories of childhood, living in a 'cold water' flat. Mum working as a floor scrubbing woman and my beloved dad, a skinded back fusilier! Me and my older sister loved Sunday Night at the London Palladium, we had nothing, but we had ❤. My aunt and uncle lived upstairs and their cat Tibby, always had kittens, but, Topo Gigio, was not allowed.

Topo Giglo did speak both Italian and Spanish. I used to have this album since I was a kid where he sang Spanish.
It was a treat to be able to stay UP to watch the Ed Sullivan show.

Everyone seems to forget Peppino Mazzullo is Topo’s voice, and dubbed Topo here in English whenever he came to America, a legend! 😊 Not only he spoke Italian But from from what I heard, he spoke fluent English too! (Like here and on the Ed Sullivan Show voicing Topo! :) ) (And can we talk about how beautiful Peppino’s high-pitched vocal singing range is at 4:41 when he’s singing the high notes as Topo to “The Skater’s Waltz”? He had such a beautiful range in his voice and had such a beautiful singing voice back then! 😊 (I don’t think many men at his age back then could sing as beautiful and as high pitched like that like he could, (It’s usually much easier for girls that could sing at a range like that,) he’s very talented and incredible at it! 😊❤️) It’s a shame how Peppino’s not appreciated more and the fact Topo wasn’t more known here in America... When anyone thinks of Topo, the first thing they think of is always Maria Perego, his creator, yet no one ever seems to think of or mention Peppino Mazzullo, his voice actor, who made him who he was, which I think is a shame he’s not more popular or gets enough credit for Topo’s name, (Whenever Topo appears, I notice they never credit Peppino as his voice most of the time, I honestly never understood why that was. ) (I’m a Peppino fan here in America, so yeah. XD I also LOVE him as Richetto too, another character of his everyone sadly seems to forget because of his huge popularity basically because I think he was “trapped” as only the character of Topo voicing him all the time. love him as both Richetto and Topo! 😊 And wait, was that him and Maria Parego that came out when Jimmy said “Topo Gigio and company!” at 5:58? I can’t tell? ) That would be amazing if it was! 😊 (Which I’m guessing it probably was him and Maria but I’m not entirely sure since they’re too far away to tell, can anyone clarify this?) but I’m glad Peppino at least got a bit of recognition and that we got to see him if it was him here at the very end of the clip, even though it was only for a split second while he was holding Maria’s hand bowing to the audience! 😊 That makes me happy! 😊
I was 12 years of age when this A.T.V. production "THE NEW LONDON PALLADIUM SHOW" was first broadcast on the British ITV network, Sunday 24th October 1965. At the end of the show, seen together on the revolving stage are the three people that are the Topo Gigio act. Wearing black camouflage gowns are Maria Perego and her male assistant animator and without camouflage is the well dressed man in a suit who took the bow with her at the front stage curtain when at the end of their performance. He is Peppino Mazzullo the voice of Topo Gigio, but only Maria Perego was named with Topo Gigio in the closing show credits.
In Britain on Saturday 1st October 1966, A.T.V. launched for childrens television "Topo Gigio Comes To Town" a series of fourteen weekly shows, the final show was broadcast on Saturday 31st December 1966. For this TV series, the credits go to Maria Perego and Sandro Negri as the animators, with voice actor artiste Keith Alexander, used as the voice of Topo Gigio.
@Hapslein Skoog I'm a new generation fan of Peppino and his roles as Topo and Richetto here in America, so I sadly wasn't alive back then. But that WAS him at the end of the clip with Maria? That's awesome! ^^ (I kinda figured it was, but I wasn't sure since he was too far away to tell. :) ) That's awesome! ^^ (I really wish there was more footage of Peppino out there, finding stuff of him (ESPECIALLY this rare footage of him here at the end of the clip when he was really young,) seems to be VERY rare unfortunately, even as his role as Richetto, there's BARELY anything of him out there i can find. (There ARE pictures of him as Richetto but only like one video of him as him I can find though sadly. :( ) I always found that kinda strange that Peppino wasn't more appreciated, credited, or known or appeared in person more often since his roles as both Topo and Richetto I was reading used to be VERY popular back then.
He also spoke Spanish flawlessly.
@@badideabearcub2747 As Topo you mean, right? I read about that! ^^ That's amazing! ^^ If he was famous in Spanish speaking countries as Topo, why not over here in America outside of the Ed Sullivan Show really back then? What a shame... :(
I DO have good news though, Movementi Production, (an Italian Animation company), just released a new Topo animated series. ^^ (It's supposed to get an English dub here in the U.S. too at some point. :) I have some good news and bad news about it:
The good news is, Topo's new voice-actor for the original Italian dub of the show (even though I can't understand a WORD of it) sounds SO UNBELEIVABLY uncanny to Peppino as Topo! ^^ It's unbelievable! ^^ th-cam.com/video/IV_6MU2hODE/w-d-xo.html
Now this is the BAD news, the show is supposed to get an English dub around here, (FINALLY something of him over here again) but sadly, however, from an animatic I've seen and stuff of it so far they decided to COMPLETELY westernize him over here and ruin him, not only they pronounce Topo's last name ALL WRONG, (It's pronounced "Gee Gou", (like Ed called him over here) NOT "Gee Gee Ou" like the way they pronounce it in this new dub), but the voice for Topo over here for it too, well... it's ADORABLE, I'll give it that, but it's AWFUL, and it doesn't even sound ANYTHING like him or his character, and that's a HUGE problem. The voice is all wrong, the broken Italian English accent isn't there, they completely pulled a 4Kids anime move on him in this new show with that awful cheap disgrace insult of a voice and BUTCHERED and WESTERNIZED him RUINING him over here, (or at least is about to since the show over here isn't out yet.) They ruined him and insulted and disrespected Peppino and Topo's character because of this I think. :( It's like it's not even Topo because of this. T_T Who knows though, things could turn around for the actual final dub but right now, yeah, NO, that is NOT Topo. T_T vimeo.com/465543362
Yes he is! Is the great Peppino Mazzullo. And I´m a fan too. In Spanish Shows and in Italy of course, Giuseppe Mazzullo is recognized. He is a very talented man and a amazing performer. I really love his voice, too. He gave real life like no other to Topo Gigio.
