Sorry all, no turning Tuesday this week. Was meant to edit the second part of the sandpaper rack project but accidentally edited this instead... ...I am not an organised man. Nevertheless, hope you enjoy! If you want to see the Walnut Cabinet featured in this video being built, you can: Watch the series here: th-cam.com/video/qsrL0FhiSOw/w-d-xo.html&t Or the overview video here: th-cam.com/video/PMqXa4QEuHc/w-d-xo.html
I knew there was much more precision to installing a hinge than all the other YT videos on hinges seem to indicate there was. When I found this video, I said haaaaaa, I just hit the jackpot!
A great tip I learned from a veteran woodworker when installing hinges is to use a self centering drill bit to get the pilot hole started then come back with a proper pilot bit. Also, a good majority of the time, the screws will be made of brass and are prone to breaking off easily. Add some wax to the threads and screw it in by hand to minimize stress.
2 videos on hinges that I have found absolutely fascinating! Your presenting style is top notch...Even an ape like me could install hinges to a high standard following this video...Me Tarzan, you Jane!
Center-finding bits. Use them with 1mm drill bit or smaler. Spot on centr and easier vertical path for the screws ! For a few quids, makes life a whole lot easier ☺
This was the comment I wanted to add. Once I used one I'll never not use one when available. They are more accurate, consistent, and quicker than the method shown. Other than that, great video. Everything was very well explained.
I never realized how technical installing a simple butt-hinge could be, but now I see why I've never turned out a hinge that looked good. Excellent tutorial! Thank you!
Great video, I really like the level of detail you share. I attempted to install hinges on a small box and they were horrible. Followed your guidance and they were perfect. I had no ideal there were so many details in what seems like a very simple hinge install. I encountered every single issue you addressed, I will step up to the more expensive hinges in future builds. Again thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Matt, this video combined with the last one crushed it! TH-cam has been my main source for learning the craft and, these two videos just blew my mind on how much more I have to learn. I haven't seen anyone tackle hardware in videos yet and I found this super useful. Thanks for the killer content!
Really appreciate the detail you provide and the nuanced practical advice, I've watched this three times now and know I'll be watching it again before I do the hinges tomorrow. Thanks
So firstly sorry for using your channel as a outlet here but as I don't use social media I just felt this was the best way to get my thoughts on this matter out there . Myself and my wife visited the Midlands woodworking show yesterday and had the chance to have a chat with yourself matt while we were there it was lovely to meet you as I think your channel is fun to watch and informative so anyway to my comment.Matt was demoing on the Axminster stand and with him there were other small stands demoing other Axminster products one of which was being manned by a young guy showing the new level cam clamps that Axminster had developed I believe in conjunction with ukj so myself and my wife were watching this young guy demo these clamps and we were the only people on the stand apart from one other guy who walked up and began watching too. So this guy then decided he was going to try and embarrass this young guy demonstrating this product by asking him the most awkward questions about the material these clamps were made of to which the lad behind the desk did not fully know the ins and outs of. Now here's my issue with this, this person took absolute delight in the fact that this lad didn't fully know the specs of the clamp material and the smug grin that spread across his face as he looked over at me and my wife demonstrated that completely. I'm not the most intelligent guy on the planet but I'm practical and thats why I love woodworking so when people at shows do things like this just to try and make themselves look clever in front of other people at trade stands it makes my blood boil, so in conclusion this is for the demo lad on that Axminster stand you were doing a great job and to that guy who thought you made yourself look big, your the prick, not that lad and your the type of person that has kept me away from woodworking shows for many years up until yesterday but next time I witness this I'm gonna pipe up and tell everyone in earshot just what I think of guys like you. Matt it was great to meet you keep up the excellent work and the great channel
I learn something new every day. Great video and very detailed explanations. I did have a bit of trouble with your accent though. I am preparing to install a hinged door on a box that will be exposed to the weather so it should be a good first try for me. Thanks very much for the informative video.
Hinges are quite tricky until you understand them. Very detailed video. Worth the time to watch. Especially enjoyed the chisel technique instruction including discussing being aware of the direction of the grain. Much appreciated. I'll definitely be checking out your other stuff. Subbed. Cheers!
hey matt! just recently found and subscribed to your channel! love all of your videos. Its really refreshing to see someone around my age be so knowledgeable in woodworking compared to all of the older people who are super stuck in their ways and unwilling to change their techniques to new ideas. but anyway. I just wanted to point out to you that you should tuck your mic wire underneath your shirt. much safer that way. It also would look a little bit better because it would hide it from view!
Thanks for this video! I'm in the middle of installing a folding desk, and I was so afraid of leaving a huge gap between my two boards. This is helpful!!!
I use a centre finding bit for the screw holes and before screwing in brass screws I screw in same size steel screws. This is very important if using a hard wood like oak. If not done this way the brass screws may shear. A really interesting video. Getting screws that fit the countersink or vice versa is a common problem. It would be best to check that before starting. Amazing detail in this video. The ultimate guide.
I truly loved this video. I have been watching your videos for some time now and this has to be one of your more in depth videos on the hows and whys of the subject. Very informative especially on the little derails that most people dont mention. Things people don't really think about when they are new to fine woodworking
I have watched this video several times, and still managed to make a mess of installing hinges. turns out I was right to be intimidated by this seemingly simple task. that said it is NOT due to poor instruction, rather failure to choose the correct size of hinge. live and learn.
Nice. I never considered the complexity of hinges before until I actually tried to install some. It wasn't pretty. You've taken a lot of the mystery out for my next project.
Fantastic explanations and demonstrations of the various ways and various common mistakes. I viewed at least a dozen videos looking for a clear explanation on how to close that shadow gap on boxes or how to avoid not completely closing. Awesome techniques and thank you for sharing. I have subed your channel as it is obvious you are indeed a master.
Thank you. Really, Matt: Thank you so much! I cannot even remember how many times I went looking for the right advice on this topic, only to get the most vague answers. Now it is my turn to give you an advice: stop going after others' girls (I was trying to figure out what could be the explanation for those few thumbs down, and this is the only thing I came up with)
Good videos, It has been my understanding that odd screw sizes, such as 3, 5, 7 etc, were always used for fixing hinges and handles to wood which is why the 4, 6, 8 etc sizes are always either too small or just a bit too large but much more common as they were in general use. I have yet to investigate how the more modern metric size screws fit with hinges and handles.
Nice one Matt, really well explained... just a point, you aim at cabinet makers and fine woodworking... But even "wood butchers" for the want of a better description can pick up fabulous tips. As a new woodworker this will help me the next time i fit hinges. I have a set of nice hinges i bought for a job yet to be completed and often use 50p hinges from Wilko. So when i get a minute or two i will fine tune a set of these and see if it turns them into a £15 set... Cheers
what an absolutely amazing video - both this one and the one where you touched up the hardware store hinges ... Installed my first set on a dovetailed box and they came out spot on!!! too bad brusso hinges cost as much as a pair of kidneys , but the hardware store ones turned out great with the modifications you suggested !!!
03:07 when you repeated it I had to smile, you reminded me of Grover. Well, the hair fits in a way. No offense! Oh, and don't mind your drawing skills, your teaching skills on the other side are top notch!
Jesus! Now I'm even more freaked out!!! Thanks Matt. Naw, you did a good job explaining it. Thanks. I'm so glad someone "you" did a video. I like the way you explain stuff. Thanks again
Thanks Matthew. I do all my pratice in soft pine. You hardly need a mallet. You just push a little with the chisel and you get the cut you need. Then you move on to a hard wood, and everything changes. Funny. Thanks Matthew.
Super informative as always. I found your channel while eating some Deliveroo'd Nando's in a Marriott hotel in North West London. Watched like 4-5 series and subbed pretty much immediately. Sadly you weren't doing any talks I could get to while I was in the UK, and now I'm back in Texas. Keep doing what you do, I'm learning a ton.
Congratulations on your impending 100K subscribers!!! Can't believe how fast you've racked them up! Keep up the great work but please use Patreon a bit more! :)
At flea markets I have seen very short stubby chisels, I assumed these were worn down, but perhaps they are for hinge recesses, so that you can have more control
Very informative. Thank you Matt. Can you (or someone else) tell me which hinges are recommended despite the two already mentioned names? I live in Germany. So at least European manufacturer (or shops) are best. Thanks!

I missed the part of the second hinge measurement so can you confirm that the indent for the hinge leaf is also marked just short of the centre of the barrel? The Vix bits work the best for me too, like your other responders the first 1/8” or so won’t affect a swap out for whatever size drill you finish with and gets the center pretty darn close without too much fuss. I was beginning to worry if everything is alright. Got so used to regular uploads. ^^
Love the drawing of your fat hinge it looks like a man bent over from behind with funny enough a but hole Hensel a but hinge lmao
Lol, Give Trello a try. I use it to manage what's coming up next, what I'm currently working on, editing and then complete.
That's OK with me! I don't like the turning so much, and these technique videos are what I need most right now. Thanks!
As you warned in the beginning, this clip is for cabinet makers. None-the less, thanks for a very competent straight delivery. Thank you.
As a carpenter/joiner, I have hung lots of doors and never thought that a hinge could be so fascinating.
I knew there was much more precision to installing a hinge than all the other YT videos on hinges seem to indicate there was. When I found this video, I said haaaaaa, I just hit the jackpot!

Great, thanks, IMO, this series is getting back to what drew me to your channel in the first place.
Never mind the hinge skills, phenomenal teaching skill. Well done, very talented!! Impressive skill to engage.

Thank you so much for this video. This is the masterpiece of hinge installation tips and details. Greatings from France.

Fantastic instruction! And thank you for showing mistakes so that we don't repeat them. I would surely figure them out when it's too late.
Great up close camera shots. Perfect steady focus! Thanks.
Mat,
No body covers this subject that I have found. Well formated and has " what to do if". well played sir well played.

Brilliant guidance for installing hinges! Thanks a ton.
great vid. have a go at making a wood turned hinge - they are large and bulky by impressive when they work, they also require skill with joinery
Brilliantly detailed instruction - thanks Matt
Nice work and a first rate presentation.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Wonderful Video!
Always a great video from you! Thank you so much for all you share!!! 👍👍👍😎🇨🇱
Matt thanks for this video. It worked perfectly!
Thank you for this, everything is explained so clearly
Really fantastic video. exactly what I needed to know for my box project! thanks
Thank you. Great to see such fine detail in your work.
Wish I'd gone to Uni now! 👍

Have you tried using a transfer punch to get the screw holes centered? I use them all the time and they're awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Very helpful! Appreciate it💛
Soooooo close to 100,000 subs!
Bloody excellent. Thanks
Thanks for the great video. It's way too long until one has done it badly several times. Then the video length seems about perfect :)

Well, the hair fits in a way. No offense!
Oh, and don't mind your drawing skills, your teaching skills on the other side are top notch!
Very good!!!
Great video mate really enjoy what your doing i love the fine woodworking which im trying to teach myself 🙄
Thanks, Great video!

As far as centering the screw in the hinge hole a self centering drill bit works great.

Yes! More cabinetry videos! :)
excellent. thank you
Hey Matt can you give us some links of cheap hinges. I live in Croatia and I can't find any... Thank you!
i might use this in the future
Thanks!
Your video was the first I have watched which showed the correct spacing for the hinge leafs. I missed the part of the second hinge measurement so can you confirm that the indent for the hinge leaf is also marked just short of the centre of the barrel? I hope the way I have written the question makes sense. I watched the Wood Whisperer installing butt hinges and I am sure he took the measurement to the centre of the barrel which confused me.
Great content! Please put the rear element cap on your lens. Thanks in advance.
One of the most difficult tasks to installing hinges properly is screw placement. I would like to see a video by you on the travails of screw placement in a hinge. If the woodworker cuts a perfect mortise for the hinge and drives the screw crooked by as little as 20,000th of an inch, the box lid and case will not be aligned.
Matt, that was some neat hinge morticing? I got some of those self centering drill bits for drilling hinges!
What no router jig? ;-)
Seriously, just discovered your channel Matt. Great stuff.
Matt, is your first choice to use an awl to mark out the center points for the screws? I started using Vix/hinge bits for drawer slides and t-track installs, and they're a game changer (at least for me). Use them? I have a couple of specific sizes, but I'd like to find one that lets me use different sized drill bits with the same tip. The Vix bits work the best for me too, like your other responders the first 1/8” or so won’t affect a swap out for whatever size drill you finish with and gets the center pretty darn close without too much fuss. I recently installed a 72” piano hinge on a lid for a built in storage/bench 75 #6 x 3/4” ss screws (they’re substantially harder than the cheepos sent with the hinge that ironically was ss..go figure). I don’t recommend using most fasteners supplied with stuff it’s mostly garbage, you can get some pretty hard ones that won’t snap off or heads strip out especially if you’re working with hardwoods or brittle stuff.
By the way, get the original “Vix bits” not the bofang knock offs they’re crap too. The Vixs are about $10 a pop but well engineered plus they’re made in the good old USA!
@@bigrockcandymountain8397 You can make tapping hardware if you're snapping heads off. It is a good idea to do if you're installing brass hardware. Paul Frederick thank you Paul I’ll take your advice next time, I usually over sized the hole for less bite but will work your method.
I've recently used countersink bit to mark the centre of the hole in something like hinges. Have you tried that? You also have used countersink to make the holes deeper in hinges, so it's just a matter of doing it in-place of their installation.
