Hi Lee and Rob! Longtime fan here. These fish are obviously trying to head for spawning territory. Are you aware of what the success rate is? I wonder if a fish ladder might help improve the natural born fishery on the Madison chain so we don't have to do so much stocking. Or we can just enjoy watching them beat themselves up on the concrete every spring.
@@23mooseknuckle What would improve the fishery is more and better cameras around the dam similar to game cams maybe. Anything to keep the violators out and others who want to disturb the fish. In '18 the water was at least a foot over the dam during the flood. I think the gates were removed also to reduce the flooding. Every fish in Lake Monona had access to Wingra. The muskies come from Chippewa river and Leech lake according to the plaque. Also, when gov. Walker and DNR sec. Cathy Stepp got rid of most DNR and biologists and arborists, etc., so many violators ran roughshod on the fish at the dams. Even so-called professional fishermen got in on the action. It was sick and disgusting.
Hey rob I think I saw you when I was fishing at the pheasant branch canal in lake Mendota, also is it legal to fish the dam while the muskies are spawning?

I’ve read up on the situation with the dam and the DNR not wanting fish moving through that area...even knowing that I still get a weird feeling seeing this. Sort of like sympathy for the fish struggling to get over, kind of an odd feeling given that I love hooking and fighting these beasts haha. Great video!

If they want to keep the muskies out they should have made the dam higher to avoid the obvious damage that they are doing to themselves when they smash against the edge! I'm guessing there will be some broken jaws for some of these fish and slow deaths because they can't feed.

That's how spawning works. Did you know turtles climb hills to lay on higher grounds? sometimes traveling close to a half mile. These fish are far from uneducated! :D
Out of season and a hatchery. I know a guy who fished one with a set line out of season and he lost his right to fish for a year, as well as heavy fines. Not worth it, especially in the middle of Madison where you're guaranteed to get caught

Why isn’t there a fish ladder
Carp used to infest that lake and they netted them out like crazy and the water cleared up. Don't want it to start all over again.

They removed all the carp from this lake and they dont want them getting back in that's the reason for no ladder

What is musky season? In NJ we catch them year round
Musky is closed to fishing Jan-April here.

This is in my hometown they have 3 lakes , this being one where they migrate up the river to try and jump the dam . It is very cool to watch lol.
