"I didn't forgot." So sweet. All of us girls wanted a boyfriend like Donald Hollinger when we were growing up, watching "That Girl." Thank you, Marlo, for being someone for us young girls to look up to. I think Ann Marie was our first indication that a happy, independent life was a possibility. She did get a boyfriend in the first episode, but we knew he was a keeper.

she didnt marry him, because the crazy feminist Marlo Thomas said "carrier is more important than marriage". as if she was Anne Marie - its a character not reality.

"Counter-Proposal" is the first episode of the fifth and final season of the ABC sitcom "That Girl" (1966-1971), and thus the season premiere. This episode was written by Saul Turtletaub and Bernie Orenstein, and directed by Saul Turtletaub. This episode first aired on ABC on September 25, 1970; Beginning with this episode, Ted Bessell's hair is now redesigned, and Marlo Thomas's hair gained a new look. Also, lyrics were added to the theme song, performed by The Ron Hicklin Singers.👍

9:33 “Will you marry me?” … a cornerstone moment in New York filmography… the orchestration of violins and flugelhorns … the Peter Max backdrop … the enraptured, twirling, soon-to-be bride … yes, a rare TV moment indeed.

I used to see this series in syndication when I was a kid in the 70s and I remember that moment as a re-run. It must have been fun to see it brand new. The way they made it so “dreamy” was a thing of the 60s-70s.

Ann says that her and Don's "first date" (6:28) was at "Citrus City". However actually in the very first episode when they first met in an office building Don took her to a far fancier place as they were discussing a rolling desk she bought for him and when the waiter brought over a tray of desserts Don split an eclair with her.

When I was growing up, we had a hole-in-the-wall restaurant kind of like Ann and Donald's Citrus City, Orange Crazy place. This was in Toronto in the late 1960's and early 1970's. It was called The Honey Dew, and it was tucked inside the basement level of a downtown Toronto department store called Simpson's. My mom would take us there for a treat in the summer time. I think they only had red hots (hot dogs) and honey dew orange to drink, on the menu. The drink was served in a silver metal cup holder, with a cone shaped dixie cup inside. Green leaves around the dixie cup. A delicious fun treat, and a treasured memory of my childhood with my mom. She made so many simple things so very special. I miss her every day.

Marlo Thomas said she didn't want to end "That Girl" by having a marriage and she didn't want to send a message to young girls that marriage was the ultimate goal for a young woman to achieve. Yet in this final season, they showed a marriage proposal, both bachelor/bachelorette parties, and an episode showing Don and Ann looking for an apartment together. If you're not going to have a wedding why have a season of all these pre-marriage events??

I completely agree with you, however, Marlo owned Daisy productions (a gift from Daddy) and everything was going to be done her way. As should be the ratings bombed and the show was canned. If this fiasco had continued another season, it would have been That Divorcee.
Thankfully Donald Hollinger dodged a very emasculating bullet.

Hi. Yes Ted Bessell didn't exactly jump off the screen on Gomer Pyle, but he did fine in 5 seasons of That Girl ( tho I don't know why the ladies consider him handsome ). He seemed to be a good guy, a strong Catholic, actually, according to a picture posted of his gravestone. What would we do without the old shows ?! Hang in there.

However, his friends convince him to buy her a second - hand engagement ring. I totally love Ann's hair style because it's so long and straight. It was so good and I can rate it 10/10 for the wonderful episode. - Filsan Sharif

Apparently for the last season somebody thought it would be cute to put lyrics to the theme song. Just because on the same network they had Love American Style, with their theme with lyrics. But the lyrics for this...meh....I'd' rather hear the instrumental. Maybe they were competing against that new fangled serie s on CBS, The Mary Tyler Moore Show with the famous song and lyrics "who can turn the world on with her smile...." etc.
