  • Episcopal priest and author of seven books on the Christian spiritual tradition, Cynthia Bourgeault endears herself to her SAND audience with this enlightening talk on the Christian contemplative tradition. She points out that esoteric Christianity recognizes that nondual perception is not possible until the mind is in the heart, and describes the tradition's understanding of the heart as an organ of spiritual perception. In this way she returns the Christian contemplative tradition to where it belongs - as one path in the rich field of contemporary nondual spiritual practice and understanding.

Inspiring, brilliant talk, so great to hear about the difference between the notion of the heart as the seat of passions (intense emotions) and the notion that the heart is in fact a way of being in a tender, open, wise and loving way. The word of "conscience" in Hungarian literary means the "knowing of the soul". This talk coincides with Iain McGilchrist's left and right brain hemisphere knowing and Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory that evidences the neural knowing and therefore centering the knowing of interconnections in the heart.
Thank you, this was clear and beautiful....

"Attention of the Heart" to recognize the divinity of Christ, His teachings, and entertaining the brain waves down into the heart. "Attentioon of the Heart" is a "meta" cognitive awareness - a unique type and level of consciousness that must be experienced to "understand" it with the nonconceptual mind akin to an " intimacy with God. "

I am as much a 'we' as I am an 'I',- For, I am a mind that thinks, a heart that knows, a body that feels, a vision that sees and an action that flows. All are a cooperative. N o t a competitive. We re all in this together. I cannot (nor would I want to) shut out my mind no more than I would want to shut out my heart, body and so on.

I love the point made at time stamp 15:70 I believe... completely supports Carolyn Myss' statement, "When the mind & heart don't communicate & aren't balanced/ in coherence, we won't have a spec of willpower (to actually practice beauties or whatever or guiding principles are).
(She's an expert in Energy Anatomy & teaching of chakras, also of how each one relates to one or a pair of the 10 Commandments & the 12 Seferot of the Jewish faith... fascinating info!)
Also, as I think was pointed out to some degree, science shows we have more nerve cells in & around our heart (neurites). Our Intuition/ gut instinct is always more knowledgeable than the limited computer brain, &, I fully believe it was Created this way as both the battery for receiving & storing all Love, Power & Wisdom given us by God every day, AS our 'daily bread', & as the initiator/Guide for the brain's ego personality to follow, NOT the other way around. When we've left the heart we've gone unconscious, back to believing we, not God are the one meant to be in Control of how Life shows up for each of us. Would be a laugh if it weren't sad. We're on our way though, especially with speakers & conferences like this one. Thanks for supporting our conscious evolution!

So much resonates in my own journey in/of Presence, and Loving Kindness in the process of transformation from a fear rendered, ego projected dualism, a deep remnant of my fundamentalist christian upbringing, for which I am so grateful and Graced. One question. Why is there such an emphasis(not just here) on higher and lower levels of consciousness, vs other available imagery, Those words are loaded with implications of better or worse, judgement, moral ego certitude of right or wrong, egoic projections of winning and loosing, or western christian fundamentalist heaven or hell. Seems to feed the ego need to see and protect from other in terms of higher is better and lower is not, vs all is one in the same as we are in the image. Probably just my context powering thru. But would be nice not to have to translate or look so hard to see thru.

Cynthia Bourgeault quote highlights from this video: “The real meaning of ‘contemplation’ is not resting in stillness, but it designates a path of luminous knowledge-knowledge of an extremely high order of intensity, and coherence, and magnitude. It's not content-free by any means; it's simply that the content is so high, and so ordered, and so intense, and so brilliant that it tends to overwhelm the faculties of our usual rational mind and the mind falls still and silent before it.”
“Contemplation is the closest equivalent in the Western Christian experience to what's known in most of the world as ‘nonduality.’”
“Steady, non-state, non-dual perception is not possible until the mind is in the heart.”
“The Christ teaching comes from a nondual level, and you can't run it when you're running a dualistic program.”
“The nature of heart-seeing is that it's intrinsically moral-this is not because of what it sees but how it sees.”

All life is ever expanding with more refined and efficient information. we are b e t t e r today than we were yesterday, and not as we re going to be tomorrow. There s nothing to 'go back to' regarding trying to get back our care/consideration etc. We have not re-gressed. We are life, and as life, are ever expanding with all other life. would you like to be back in 1920? , or 1560? , regarding human rights etc. Blaming a n y t h i n g for your/our fear, pain and suffering I S suffering! You want to blame something? Blame everything! To blame all is to accept all. The question then becomes the answer, and the concern becomes presence. Heartmindedness.

I just spent a week with her on these topics where the whole week was in tribute to Fr. Thomas and his teaching on divine therapy and his own excruciating final passage into nonduality. A book is forthcoming. All honor and glory was offered to Keating yet where over the decades corrections and variances of the path surfaced, as happens in time, not just with her own revelations but with those of such mystics as Bernadette Peters, who Keating originally rejected but came to understand as his own experience into No Self.

The contemplatives could very well be seen as moochers off of the generosity of the working class. That’s why Paul refused to live off of charity and continued in his day job. There is no such thing as a higher consciousness. That is Gnosticism. How do you know when you have this higher level of consciousness? When you have it! Thereby you see the non duality of the world through a duality. Word salad that only those on the inner circle understand.

Really unwise to bring politics into this discussion. I guess by expressing her disdain for the "religious right" she means if you have some kind of mystical awakening and an epiphany of love and non-duality that makes it OK to kill your baby?

The religious right by and large stands in the way of any kind of mystical approach. This is the case across cultures, as the right tends to prefer authoritarian power structures rather than personal gnosis, and also tends to prefer literalism to metaphor and symbol.
