    "No one wants to see an old character withering away"...you nailed it...which is precisely why a movie like Top Gun Maverick did so well. Because it was an old character who was still portrayed as great...but was starting to realize that his time was coming to an end and it was his job to now pass the torch to a younger generation with humbleness and dignity. And it also portrayed the younger generation respecting him and his accomplishments...and gracefully accepting the torch as it was passed to them.

      I didn't see Top Gun Maverick, because I hated Top Gun; but let me make a comment here any way. You say Tom Cruise's character "was an old character who was still portrayed as great". I agree that in Top Gun he was portrayed as great. But I thought he was a macho a**hole. Same with the other characters in that film. I'd really like to see him withering away in Top Gun Maverick.

    I was twelve years old when “Raiders of the Lost Ark” came out. The film honestly changed my life. I think it changed a lot of lives. I still remember seeing it for the first time with my dad in a little theater in my hometown. The theater closed last year after 50 years. And yes, it is the best Indiana Jones film ….hands down. Don’t let anyone else say otherwise.
    I must now take this bitter pill and endure the final Indy installment. It’s not going to be easy or fun. I’m not in any particular hurry to see it. Indy as a sullen, ineffectual invalid…Indy in 1969 (my God, I was born in 1970). These films have come to mark time and history in a weird sort of way. I don’t like how they’ve seemingly strip mined these iconic brands. Yes, sucked them dry and left their carcass in the desert. It seems like they’re trying to make us feel guilty for ever loving Indy in the first place. I’m quite sure it will make me feel sad (not nostalgic)….and probably rather old.
    Yes, RIP Indiana Jones.

      @TheGeorgeD13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @todd3382,
      I have a hard time seeing it as a “woke” film though. It’s certainly not feminist in the slightest with the opposite of a strong female lead in Helena who is, by Indy’s own words in the film, a reckless and irresponsible mess with Daddy issues, and a damsel in distress for most of the film, constantly having her ass saved by Indy.
      And race wise, it comes off horribly not woke in the slightest with its only black character brutally killed by a Nazi with that Nazi practically gloating in her face as this black woman he killed dies.
      It couldn’t be further from being woke in my view.
      And to answer your question: yes, it now will be part of my annual watch of the series along with the trilogy.
      The plot is sorta nonsense, but Waller-Bridge and Ford’s chemistry makes the movie a e notable watch for me. Definitely not as good as the first three films, but still entertaining nonetheless. Also its final scene made me very happy as an Indiana Jones fan.

    I saw it.
    I saw the movie's weakpoints, mainly being PWB's character and her writing.
    But I found enough gems in this film to thoroughly enjoy the ride.
    Harrison does an amazing job and I even felt that I could go and watch a detective style movie of Indy and Sallah in the New York of the 70's , without a lot of action. How short it was, I loved the scenes with Indy and Sallah together in the taxi and his appartement.
    I loved the treasure hunting and puzzlescenes more than the action sequences actually.
    It could have used more mystery and a supernatural feel. That would have helped.
    Anyway.
    I feel greatfull for having been alle to see Harrison wear the fedora and jacket once more.
    To me this was so satisfying, I could easily watch over the faults and flaws.
    Hell. Even Indy, sitting in a bar, lamenting his good old days for two hours straight would have been fine for me.

    "We filmed the four heroes riding off into the sunset because this is the end of a trilogy, like RETURN OF THE JEDI was for STAR WARS (THAT comment would sadly age like milk). They ride off into the west like cowboys in a classic western. That's why it's called LAST CRUSADE, because this is it, Indy's last adventure."

    I appreciate the review with actual thought and reasoning behind the negatives. The thing that people are missing about treating Indy bad is that it does change as the movie progresses and she begins to develops a connection with him and respect for him. She’s not just snarky to Indy in this film, but to everyone as that’s her character; Only out for herself, but like I said… she evolves. I have my arguments for most things people consider bad in this film but that would be further than the scope of what I wanted to say here. I will add that the old Harrison voice on younger Indy is a big, “ you couldn’t clean that up a bit?” And the fact that, and only god knows why, they didn’t dissolved the paramount logo into anything. Especially when the beginning is set at a castle they could have used. That being said, I absolutely loved the film and I’m an Indy die hard to the point of having multiple pieces of Indy wardrobe made by the original people and even was part of the groups that study the stuff on screen to be as accurate as possible.

    I loved the first movie and to some extent, the second, because they felt like the pulp novels after which they were designed. Unfortunately, there's a problem inherent in those sorts of stories because so much of what happens involves an ultimately unbeatable hero who you know will win in the end. This means you either have to (a) give him ways to lose in secondary ways, (b) give him a stalemate that's a borderline victory, or (c) have characters that may or may not die in the end. Otherwise, the movies lose tension.

I immediately thought of my father and of that generation who went off to fight the Second World War, went on adventures and then return to live ordinary lives. And do ordinary things, like falling asleep in front of the TV.
    Was Indy being ushered into retirement to make way for Helena? Yes but that is exactly what life does when one gets old. You go from throwing the family parties one day to being the old person sitting on the couch with the young people swirling around you. I like that Hollywood allowed Harrison Ford to get old, unlike Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. And I appreciated this movie.

    I could say The Last Crusade is the perfect Indy movie. It's the most mature of the 3 films, the tension between father and son works great and the story is more solid than the previous two.
    On the other hand, we are living in very psychotic times. Let's take this case, the one of a movie that is part of a bunch of films that marked an era. Who would have thought of taking the main character, an icon of the 80s and 90s that transcends time and borders, like Indiana Jones, and making a new movie, with his name on the cover, only to treat the main character like crap throughout the entire story, in an unnecessary and out-of-context manner? Making a movie for its fans who are now in their 30s or 40s, or even older, and for the new fans who are just discovering it, and spitting in their faces with this? It's not good for the art of cinema, nor for the story that is intended to be told, nor for the business. And yet, they don't go bankrupt, and people won't set the theaters on fire. These are very dark times we live in...

    I love Willie Scott. She's a "comedic character," which is not the same as "an attack on women," like a lot of people seem to think. Yeah, she's a spoiled narcissist, but her narcissism is so poetically and cleverly done. That scene where Indy brings her the fruit after that awful dinner scene is so great. The interaction between Dr. Jones and Willie is just poetry, followed by the fight, where Indy is being choked, and she's screaming from the other room "You'll always remember this as the night I slipped through your fingers!!" And Indy just reaches out with his hand, because there's nothing he could do at that moment. It's great.

    The YT algorithm brought your video to my attention and appreciate your review....you obviously put a lot of work into it. Also, couldn't but notice your copy of the Watchmen (there was time when I would tell people this is the one graphic novel you need to read if you read no other comic book). Glad you mentioned how the Raiders of the Lost Ark was inspired by the serials George Lucas and Spielberg grew up on. If I may be so pretentious as to add that there are subtexts to all the Indy films by Spielberg such as....Indiana Jone fears nothing as established by the famous opening sequence of Raiders except as we learn....snakes. So when he finally finds the Ark, it is of course in a pit of snakes. The subtext here is that you can never find or achieve that which you most desire until you conquer your greatest fears. I will let you discern what they are in the other films but a major component to storytelling is to have dynamic characters....characters who change and grow. The Helena character is not such a character. She, like Rey, never have to learn or change in any fundamental way....they are invincible and capable and just conquer all....and remain fundamentally flat characters. Such writing creates personnas that are difficult if not impossible to relate to. They have not flaws or need to develop. Luke Skywalker in the original trilogy may be blessed with the force, but he has to suffer, learn and grow. (Amazingly how Mark Hamill, in suffering a serious car collision which left facial scars was able to have this lend to his maturing in becoming a Jedi). By Katherine Kennedy's own account, Harrison Ford had real conflicts with how the Indiana Jones character was being portrayed in this film as he has stated how much he loved the character.

    The first three Indiana Jones movies are "only" entertainment, but they are art, because they make one forget about oneself, they make one wonder, laugh, and feel good. They make one feel great to be alive. As for this latest Kennedy catastrophe: no comment.

    My wife checked her watch and said, "How long is this?" ... while she was watching the trailer! She wouldn't go see this one, and neither would anyone else, so I ended up going alone. It was terrible, for exactly the reasons listed by this reviewer. I agree with everything she said, and even if I didn't, I could respect the thought she put into it and her knowledge of film. I have found my new Roger Ebert! Subscribed.

    Thank you very much for another excellent review 🙏🏽 I think you are performing a valuable service of going to see modern films so that we don't have to - and then recording a review which is probably ten times better than the film that you are reviewing 😊 This film sounds as pathetic and 'on message' as most of the gumff that comes out of Hollywood these days, but your review is, as always, delightful and entertaining (in the way that films used to be 😮) 🙏🏽

    Helena = Rey = another KK wish fulfilment / fantasy avatar; the 'strong, creative, independent female finally coming out of the shadow the mediocre men in her life'.
