  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 - 5 December 1791), baptised as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, was a prolific and influential composer of the classical era. According to Bartje Bartmans one of the greatest and brightest stars on the firmament.

    Piano Sonata No. 16 in C major ("Sonata semplice") K. 545. Vienna, June 26,1788
    1. Allegro (0:00)
    2. Andante (3:27)
    3. Rondo. Allegretto (8:15)
    Ingrid Haebler, piano
    Description by Brian Robins [-]
    Universally known as the "Sonata facile (or semplice)," the relative ease of K. 545 has ensured that it has become the most of famous of all Mozart's piano sonatas, a work that scarcely a student of the instrument fails to learn at some point in his or her career. The entry in Mozart's own thematic catalog, dated June 26, 1788, adds that the sonata was intended "for beginners." Yet despite its fame today, the circumstances of its composition are not known, the original manuscript is lost, and the sonata was not published in Mozart's lifetime, the first edition appearing in 1805 from the press of the composer and publisher Johann André of Offenbach.
    There are three short movements: an Allegro, often quoted as a paradigm of the ambiguity of Classical "simplicity," a charming central Andante, and a tiny finale in Rondo form. It is remarkable to note that this unpretentious little work must have been composed at the same time as the great last trilogy of symphonies; indeed it was added by Mozart to his catalog of works on the same day as the first of those magnificent works, the great Symphony No. 39 in E flat, K. 543, one of his grandest conceptions.

      Oh please. Of course it's almost impossible to master a piece, that's why Bach is so much played at exams for superior classes, however I invite you to play some Liszt or Ravel, and maybe you'll see what monstrous pieces are these compared to this.
      You will also note that this piece is played by many children, in their first years of piano...

    You shouldn't underestimate this sonata, it may be easier than other works of Mozart, but that doesn't make it a piece for beginners.
    Some parts of the first movement are harder than you think. You need fast fingers for the scales and the the arpeggios are not so easy to play in the right speed. And then you have to play it with musical expression, left hand less loud etc. The difficulty is ranked intermediate (4-5 out of 9)

      And this little piece of nonsense has been repeated ad infinitum, ad nauseam all over TH-cam by commentators who have never stopped to think for themselves that Mozart is no different really from most other older keyboard composers where every note matters - Scarlatti being a good example.
      It’s less relevant in later composers like Chopin where if you omit a note or two because you can’t stretch, nobody notices, but with Mozart’s contemporary Haydn, there is no difference whatsoever between the two composers.
      Mozart was quite clear about this Sonata facile* that it was a little sonata ‘for beginners’, and that’s what it is; it serves no purpose to attempt to big it up into something it is not.
      * Italian singular, therefore pronounced correctly:
      *’fah*-chee-leh’.

      @@danal81 yes not always, but in my personal opinion they often can be. Playing ability aside, as a listener I often feel that pianists rush through many pieces that, again just in my personal subjective opinion, don't sound like they were meant to be played through so quickly. Again, in my personal opinion (so as not to offend the speed gang).

    • @danal81
      @danal81 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pope Fran pianists can rush through pieces for various reasons, sometimes emotions overtake them and it reflects on their tempo (Perahia’s performance of Chopin’s fantasie in f minor towards the end comes to my mind). Uchida sometimes “rushes” Mozart, I think it’s the way she feels phrasing with Mozart works the best. I wouldn’t say either of these pianists is not musical. Of course there are pianists who play fast for superficial effect. I get what you mean, and your comment is relevant under this video because one of Haebler’s greatest strengths is precisely this more laid down approach to Mozart’s music which lets it “breathe”.

    Now, I guess the only other mystery to be solved is - what is "semplice" about this, exactly. The left hand alberti is particularily unpleasantly difficult to play delicately. I get my nose out of joint at the suggestion that this piece, played beautifully, is in any way easy. This performance is very graceful and beautiful, but she is also a superb pianist. With technique. This isn't easy and if you are working on this piece, don't let that description discourage or bully you off of it. Just take Horowitz's advice "to play well you must do 3 things - practice, practice, practice."

    I would like to know where that sonata is easy ...

    • @mw11stuff
      @mw11stuff 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      In all 3 movements. The hardest is probably the rondo and it was only grade 6 a few years ago.

    • @pianoplaynight
      @pianoplaynight 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      @@mw11stuff let's hear you play it spotlessly. This only LOOKS easy but I confirmed with an international competition winning concert pianist that the amount of constant exposure in this sonata makes it terribly difficult to pull off. All while conveying the beauty in its simplicity. She said it's one of the last sonatas she'd choose for a public performance. "mozart is easy for amateurs and difficult for professionals"

    • @mw11stuff
      @mw11stuff 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@pianoplaynight you can say that about basically any Mozart sonata, what a moot point. Don't even try to argue that this sonata is not easy, lots of beginners learn it and for a competent pianist it is basically sight readable. Many of the other sonatas are far harder in comparison. I don't need to show you my performance for this to be true.

    • @pianoplaynight
      @pianoplaynight 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@mw11stuff it's technically among the easiest but as I repeat: the amount of exposure in it is largest than most other sonatas by M. Just ask a professional about it. There's much more to a piece than its technical difficulty

    • @pianoplaynight
      @pianoplaynight 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@mw11stuff "the most difficult movement of the Moonlight sonata is the first", "kinderszenen is more difficult than the Fantasy", "voiles is among the most difficult preludes in book 1 by Debussy" - some of the things I've heard over the years from piano professionals and teachers, all of which sounded absolutely silly to me, then I learned about the things that people usually ignore: quality of sound, timbre, exposure, coherence of interpretation, etc etc, so many "hidden" difficulties that arise once you mastered the technical aspect of the music. Funny thing is that even some sight-readable music, like the k545, is actually considered difficult by professionals for non-technical aspects. As I said. Go and ask a professional pianist if they think this is easy, or if they would play this rather than another sonata. I asked a few and the answer was always the same. Wish you a good day.

    I've been playing piano for about a year, and I've just started studying this piece. It's certainly not "facile" for me at all, but I think that it's an excellent piece to study. It's challenging for a beginner, but it's not too difficult that an attempt would be a waste of time.

No, I guess not-much less-much, much, much…oh, repetend-much less! Let’s put it that way! This piece has already endured for an Infinitesimal portion of eternity and might just possibly endure for another infinitesimal portion of eternity-depending how global warming and nuclear winter go, I suppose! Amazing!
