I am one of those with only a single tank. Because I’m in an apartment, I’m legally limited to just the single, small, tank. I did the best I could and bought fish from reputable stores that quarantine, and try not to buy individual fish at random times.
Do you have any advice? I’m a dumb guy who killed many fish as a preteen and now as a new adult, I want to try again at fish keeping, but with way more knowledge.
@@davidreyes6806 Right there with you! Best advice I have: 1. Don't rush. Really figure out what you want first; the size of tank you want and can have, the fish, whether it will be planted or not, etc. 2. Find a good place to put the tank BEFORE you buy it. Don't be me. :) 3. Buy the tank and the substrate/hardscape FIRST. 3b. RINSE IT ALL FOR A MILLION YEARS. (or at least until the water runs clear. I didn't rinse my substrate enough and the water was opaque for over a week.) 4. Do NOT buy a "throw away fish" to cycle the tank. Plan for that fish to live in the tank for at least a year or more. So you want to actually WANT that fish. 5. Don't start with shrimp. Trust me, it is an absolute losing situation to try to cycle with shrimp. 6. If you are going with live plants, plant them in shallow water, but don't have fish in there yet. Let yourself have time to really figure out the plantscape before adding fish. I wish I'd done this. 7. Relax. This is mostly for fun. Once you get the cycle started, don't buy your full compliment of animals for at least a month or two. and lastly, 8. Buy from someplace reputable that does their own quarantine and DON'T BUY PIECEMEAL. (meaning, don't buy 2 fish here and 4 fish there. That rarely ends well. Buy all your fish or other critters together if at all possible.) Hope that helps!
@@davidreyes6806 Ebon was really helpful but yeah try and buy all your fish from one source and see if they QT them at all. I know a few stores do treat and QT fish before selling them which could really help out, when buying a fish make sure it looks healthy and eats greatly. Have fun!

Nicely put sir. If you have the availability to quarantine new fish separately then absolutely do just that. If not, just be aware of the possibility of worst case scenario..... all your fishies die!

Back in the day,when I got new fish,a plant,and snails.They got a dose of Methylene blue. It staind everything blue.
Now there are so many products available,for treating fish diseases.
Yes I quarantine new fish in my show tank,I call it a preventative.
I think just going to a fish store,and buying fish at random,is the worst thing.
Seen on tanks in the store NOT For Sale in Quarantine,with dead fish.

Tip for this method: drain the tank first. I've done this several times from 200 gals to 75s and the meds cost (duh) a lot cheaper 🤘
Here at Cape Fear Koi, we always QT our koi when new fish arrive from different ponds. I didn’t in the beginning and I learned the hard way and got gill flukes, then had to treat the entire 5,000 pond!! I’m going to make a video this week about rescuing some very nice koi and also going to stress the importance of QT.
I don’t have the funds for a quarantine tank, I have always just put them in my tank.
Knock on wood I haven’t had any issues but I will definitely go get some general cure for when I need it.

I had an almost angry exchange with an assistant at a local ’Pets At Home’ (UK version of ‘Pet Smart/Co’) store recently when I was there to buy supplies for my cats and thought as I was there, I would take a look at their fish. In the days before having any knowledge on or even having heard of quarantining fish, I had bought some from this particular store before and like Lisa, trusted the store and obviously you can guess that when I put them straight into the tank and lost them all plus 3 of my already existing fish. 😞
With this in mind, I was sceptical to say the least but I noticed in an approximately 4/5 gallon tank, one of the “MANY”, I estimated at least 30-40+ guppies, being heavily boxed pregnant and because I am able to look after her properly, I decided to rescue her.
The assistant started off ok but when the assistant started asking me questions about the tank that the fish would be living in, I explained that because she was pregnant she would be quarantined using a sponge filter to protect her and her possible for obvious reasons, she refused to sell me the fish saying that there was no need to quarantine, the fish should be in a fully stocked tank and had never heard of a sponge filter and couldn’t believe something like that filter would ever work! She was quite rude about it, and said it was company policy that unless the filter was like the ‘Eheim Pick Up Internal Power Filters’, “their was no way she would sell it to me on welfare grounds and as I am not going to buy a fish she was going to serve someone else that wanted a Guinea pig.”
I was genuinely shocked as I don’t claim to be an expert by any means but I know that there is no way I am going to risk my community tank especially as I had at the time, 2 other pregnant guppies living in there and also because of previous experience of fish bought from that exact same store. I was just trying to help and do the right thing and I got that. 🤬😞

$10 storage containers from walmart or homedepot make good quarantine tank :)
Yep it does not have to be a fish tank heck a large 50+ Gal garbage can works as well, basically anything that hold water.
I got three new peacock cichlids quarantined them for two weeks with no meds. They looked good and eating good. So I added them to my 125. After a week in the main tank all my fish started dying I ended up losing 12 fish the three that I added to the tank survive. I started treating with ich-X. They seem to be doing better. I saw no signs of illness. So upsetting. And this is the first time I had quarantined any fish. And first time ordering fish online. I’ll stick to my local guy. Good info thanks for the video.
I do the same thing. I put General Cure in my 75 gal and treat all the fish periodically, especially when adding new fish. I don't seem to have any issues.
Thank you for this video. I just so happened to buy cory cats right before watching this video. (I know this is not exclusive to cories, just happens to be a coinkydink!) I had to quick set up a qt tank because I am a shrimp person expanding out into fish. The tank that the cories will go into have rose danios and no way am I risking my purple and pink bullets! Thanks again for making these vids! You saved fish lives today!

I would recommend to use Safety Stop and bath the fish per the instructions in case you are one of those who can’t QT a new fish going in your DT just my little two cents if this can help all in this wonderful community as that’s more for Saltwater not sure if you can use that for freshwater fish. Hope this helps..
There is no such thing as the perfect fish store, even my favorite fish store you need to quarentine. Cory mcelroy has one of the best fish stores in the world and he still commands us to quarentine!

Regarding your statement about it being unnecessary to quarantine when the tank was empty and these are the first fish being added: I disagree. If you need to medicate the fish, it's a lot more efficient to have them in a smaller tank so it takes less meds to get the job done, unless you have the resources to medicate a big tank. I personally like to prophylactically treat new fish with the med trio Cory recommends, plus feed them a "round" of New Life Spectrum Hex Shield to clear any potential gut problems. It's worked very well. But this isn't me trying to tear you apart, I understand big fish needing a big tank, etc.

The problem is that not all the products that Cory recommends, are available outside of the USA which is why Cory is always careful to state buying close alternatives in local stores/regions. He is unable to ship Aquarium Co-op products outside of the USA at the moment so he understands the problems we face. (I think read last week that he has just started to trial shipping to Canada 😉)
Thankfully, I believe that ‘API General Cure’ is available online worldwide through Amazon, so at least we have something to go with and like John, I would definitely recommend it. 😎
Why would you give a child antibiotics if they arent showing any signs of illness
@@sage6336 prophylactic treatment of fish is common, successful, and many deem it necessary after knowing what kind of conditions most come from. A single round of mild antibiotics won't harm the fish's immune system or the biological filter, but it will successfully prevent an outbreak of bacterial infection after guaranteed exposure.
John, Do you have to cycle the quarantine tank? Also, how long should you quarantine the new fish?
I don't want to keep the quarantine tank up and running all the time. I don't really have the room for it but far better to medicate that thing than the main tank. Meds are crazy expensive here in Canada if you can find them at all. I'll be running the little HoB filter that came with the tank as well as a small sponge filter, no substrate, little heater, a few plastic plants to give them places to hide etc. I also have a sponge filter in the main tank. I could pull that one for the quarantine and place the new sponge into the main tank. That way I'll always have a cycled sponge when needed. I just don't know if it's necessary if I'm treating the tank with the Med-trio. (not sure if the meds will kill off any beneficial bacteria)
There are no dumb questions. That said only advantage to quarantining fish for a new tank would be a smaller qt tank would be cheaper to medicate if need be. I do not qt, don't have the space. My four tanks are in my home and I keep plenty of meds on hand just incase. I know its a risk but one I have to take.
I put 12 fish in at once at didn't quarantine them. They are all fine and are having babies like crazy haha

Hi, i have viewed a number of your videos and I like your advise. i have a 120 gal. freshwater show tank. For the most part i have managed to do pretty well with my fish. However, I want to have an Arowana in my tank. So far I have bought (2). Both have died for some reason or other. I can't quarantine, so before i have introduced them to my tank i check the water and the temperature. I float them and I have monitored them closely (obviously not close enough). They start to eat well within a day or so and seem to be adjusting well. After about (2) weeks, all of a sudden, they stop eating and shortly thereafter, i find that they have died. I am doing something wrong!!! any advise? By the way, in this tank, I have a large Tiger Oscar, medium sized Albino Oscar, a really large Clown Knife, a Fire Eel,, a medium Managuense (not sure that's spelled correctly), and a large Pleco. None of the other fish are affected.
I am going to try it again today. The store that I have bought these fish from appear to be well run and they some really nice fish, and the fish appear to be healthy when I buy them. I don't quite understand what i am doing wrong????

i use paraguard for quarantine so far its worked great
I have a separate 10 gallon tank I use for a safety as needed/hospital/quarantine tank when I need it or get new fish. If they are too big for the quarantine tank I do it in the main tanks. The main big tanks I have are a 20 gallon and a 60 gallon.
Would you consider it a good idea to, when adding new fish, to dose with, say, API General Cure just as a preventative, without seeing any symptoms?

Oh I've done this without quarentineing my rainbows.. luckily I had no issues... But I have got out my other tank and set it up... For the next set of fish...
Ps. Esha 2000 is amazing stuff that treats many illnesses. I use this every time I add fish without quarentineing. But instead will use my other tank with this stuff in when I get my new fish.
Hi i just watched your video. I have only one tank and when i buy fish to my favorite fish store. First i check the general state of the fish, cleanliness of the tank, dead fish, fish behavior. If i am satisfied only then i buy fish. I put them in my tank and monitor them for days and days. I have lucky not having diseases. I dont think being too extreme helps but of course if you have a spare tank then it will be perfect.
How did you get behind tank to paint if full w water? Your stand have wheels?
Another thing that might cause sickness even in healthy fish is the stress of being shipped. I had 2 shipments where the weather was great, and then on the day they were on the UPS truck, a snowstorm came through. No one anticipated the change in the weather. And the fish got too cold (2 were upside down gasping) and then 2 weeks later, the ich showed up. Always quarantine and do it for a month or more.
I just picked up a used 360 gallon acrylic that's 8'Lx3'W'x2'T. I can get a nice silver arowana from a friend but it's already roughly 24" long. I was wondering if this tank is too small for an arowana since they can grow even larger than this. At this size, there is only enough room for the fish to swim 4X its body length across the tank. I feel bad when I see Beta fish in cups or 1 gallon tanks and this seems like the same thing. Do you think I should get a fish that doesn't grow as large?
What I'd use for a quarantine "trio" is general cure, aquarium salt, melafix and pimafix. And of course fresh new water on the day of entry.
how often/long did u used the Remedy Care? I’m in your same situation.
Quarantine is always an on point subject. They'll be fine...until that one time they are not and you lose the entire tank of ALL your fish.

I’m one that doesn’t. I don’t have the room to do so nor a spare tank. When I buy fish (Cichlids), I always spend some time at the store and watch them. Make sure they don’t appear to be sick and check out the conditions of the tank and the other fish there with.
I have a ton of hiding spots for the little critters. I keep a close eye on them and the water chemistry. Just to make sure nothing funny is going on. I also do add API Stress Coat to the tank.
I haven’t had any issues for the most part. Except one time they ate my Blue Ram 😞
Getting an Oscar and a Severum tomorrow for my 75g. I have to get them from 2 different stores. Can I treat the tank with aquarium salt and General Cure at the same time?

I love the video, but towards the end. The fish you mentioned, those who are lethargic, emaciated and depressed. Those are actually the types of fish I buy specifically to rescue. I've rescued over a hundred fish throughout my life so far and will continue. Most bounce back and when they do its really rewarding. I've had great success bringing back goldfish, cichlids, Oscars and tetras. But if you're knowingly buying sick fish definitely have a spare vessel of water for them to heal and rest in.
If you buy your fish from the same shop(local) should you still quarantine?(if they came from diff tanks at the shop) not sure if the diseases etc would pass from tank to tank ther for making the whiles shop have it? (i know that it can for repltiles but not sure if that logic applys for fish)

Awhile ago, you added a new pair of pumps to help clear the water in that tank by increasing the water flow through the media, but it appears that the water is still fairly cloudy. Have you pinpointed that issue yet?
What if you want to do a community tank, get all the fish from the same place, could you just “mass treat” the fish together?
That's kind of what he was saying in the video. But keep in mind that you shouldn't add too many fish at once or you can have an ammonia spike. It takes a while for the beneficial bacteria to grow and keep up with the load.
Yes. I also find that it makes it easier on those timid shoaling fish if you buy more at a time. Makes them feel safer than buying a few at a time.
@@kpNov23 True! The point I was trying to make is you don't want to add "all" say 30 fish at once in your 10 or 20 gallon tank. Unless you're willing to monitor the ammonia and nitrite levels. Which would also mean frequent water changes to keep the levels low enough for the fish until the bacteria gets caught up. Most newbies won't do that. Heck, I've been deep in the hobby for 52+ year's and I won't do that.
im rather lucky my local fish store not only quarantines fish before sale for a week but also treats them i have never had a sick fish from them in all 10 years of me getting from them
I'm a little confused. You said that you do not have a spare tank that is large enough to quarantine your new large fish. And then you also said if you had noticed that your new fish showed signs of illness to get them out of there. Where would you have put them if you did notice illness? Or would you continue to treat the entire tank of established fish along with the sick new fish?
I lost all my Goldfish except 2 (Calico's both survived somehow), Petco large Oranda had 3 pathogens and two days was in the corner doing nothing (bad sign you could have picked up in a quarantine tank) and ended up costing me 6 fish . Comet calico never showed signs of any of the 3 pathogens like he was immune or something.
It was slightly touched on but is it possible when buying new fish, to add them to the tank you want them to be without quarantining BUT adding some general meds etc to the overall tank for safe measure? It wont negatively affect the fish that are already there would it and also it would be helping the new fish in the instance that they do possibly have something like an illness and are not 100% clean.
Please do a video on proper technique to catch aquarium fish. I find the process to be anxiety causing and so much stress. It’s filled with tension for me. I just started with fish like a year ago and moving a few fish out of a 20 gallon to a 35 gallon was so nervous making a put it off for two days because the uncertainty was filled me with paralysis by analysis.

John, you make some very valid points. Quarantining i.e. QT is very important. A large percentage of people are not buying super large fish and should definitely keep a 5.5 or 10 gallon stand alone tank with a simple sponge filter, and heater if needed to QT their fish. This goes to the total cost of fish keeping. If someone can not afford a small tank for this process maybe they should revisit if they can afford the hobby overall, because the cost of all those meds and the added heartbreak of losing fish will surely surpass the cost of setting up that extra tank. Great video.
Can plants survive all the meds? Should I just set up a nice well planted tank and then use it just for a quarantine tank whenever I’m adding new fish to my community aquarium or if any of my fish ever get sick and I have to medicate them somewhere away from all my healthy fish?
I would just take a fast growing floating plant out of your main tank for quarantine when needed then pitch. You don't want substrate in quarantine esp if you are deworming fish.
My Betta arrived and I'm iffy on if something is going on with it or it's just decolored from stress. I feel dumb quarantining a Betta that's going into a tank with only a snail but it's planted and I just don't want to redo the cycle and sanitize everything if it does end up being sick.
I get quarantining, but how do you do it with the med trio for 4 weeks? One round of General Cure, then one round of Ich X a week later etc.?

You don't need an actual tank to quarantine, a plastic tub works find, just need a spare filter which can be packed away when the setup isn't needed
What would you have done if you DID NOT have access to antibiotics? Here in Canada, they restricted them for animal use only with veterinary prescription, as of last year, and pet/aquatic stores have been selling out the last of their stock since then. I'm lucky enough to have nabbed some stuff, but only 1/3 of what Corey recommends, and there's no chance to get more. Most of Europe has been under those same restrictions for a while now; and I read a story where a man in Britain was arrested and charged when he tried to bring some over from where it wasn't illegal. Who knows, the US may eventually follow that lead, as there is concern that the overuse/misuse of animal antibiotics is what is driving the rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria & virus. It's going to be an interesting few years as we have to adapt our hobby practices to this new reality; just wish there were more youtubers who could lead the way. Joey's the only big-name Canadian, but so far he's done only species-only, or had the ember tetras isolated for several weeks before adding the arrowana, for instance. I'd love to know how you'd have approached this tank differently without meds!
You QT for a long time and hope for the best I guess. Try to keep the fish feeling safe and happy: water changes, places to hide, not too many changes to the tank etc.
I never quarantine a tank. And never had a problem been doing that for over 40 years
Hi, I love your channel! I have a question..is it too bad to disconnected the air pump filter just at night ...say 6 hours? The noise is driving my family nuts and “cant sleep” and the ways to silent it like wrap it in a towel, that ive seen makes me nervous that can start a fire 😭 ( I have 1 betta in a 3 gallon)
Make sure you have a one way valve you wouldn’t want to accidentally syphon you’re tank out... just take the air pump off or bye a silent one
Are the parasites & diseases transmitted via the water or is it a close contact only kind of thing? If the latter, was curious if you could quarantine them with the use of dividers or something

Yes you're pointing to the correct corner lol.
The only reason I can think of that people would be freaking out about quarantining before putting them in an empty display tank would be for plants. I put some neons in an empty planted tank and they ended up having ich. To treat it you have to raise the temp and if I did that in their display tank would kill my plants. I ended up tearing that tank up anyway trying to catch them to put them in a 10 gal hospital tank. It was a little bit of a mess, but everyone's well now and in my 20 long.

In my years of fish keeping (20+ )I've never had any issues. Just don't buy sick fish. I buy from reputable sellers who I know quarantine when they take fish in. The guy i recently started buying from even sanitizes his nets in a solution before putting them into his tanks so he doesn't cross contaminate. Each of his tanks runs off sponge filters and a drip system. They are not connected in any way.
Any idea what he's using to sanitize his nets? I was told Big Al's had some net sanitizing solution, but at least Big Al's Canada no longer sells it. I've gone with hydrogen peroxide, rinsing/airing well afterwards, but still not fully confident in it.
So you never had to QT?

My girlfriend doesn’t quarantine her fish and she hasn’t had any issues. I guess it’s just luck if it’s that bad.

Hi. How can I keep my quarantine tank cycled and ready in between uses?
You don't need to keep the whole tank cycled, just keep some spare media or a sponge filter cycling in another tank, so you can pull it out and put into use in QT/hospital/new tanks as needed.
It happened to me. I had 30 barbs in a 55g tank and I bought some more tiger barbs to add but forgot qt and within 1 week I lost 25 tiger barbs. So quarantine your fishes people. Have a good day.
can you quarantine moderately sized fish in really small tanks? I am 11, so I cant have large tanks, I don't have much money and I live in a town house, so I can't get quarantine tanks bigger than 5 gallons.
I normally don’t QT if I buy from store in my trusted list but any other I got a 5g bucket in storage, 2 battery filters and an unholy amount of batteries under my bed.
How common is this? I dont have enough space for a quarantine and for 7 years I've never had a single issue with disease.
Just got my first fish and they're in quarantine
What about diy qt? I've done Rubbermaid kiddy pools etc but I'm not hating on the no qt
I haven't quarantined my fish it's been 1 month since I got them along with the moulded tank. I would like to send you a video of my aquarium. I have 5 gold fish and 4 zebra fish and one sucker fish. One golf fish died in two days dont know why. It was upside down. Can i still quarantine my fish.

I've always wondered if fish antibiotics will destroy the bio filter? Seems counter intuitive I dunno.

I have been very naughty. I noticed my hospital/quarantine aquarium was low on o2 and high on co2. Mainly due to my buffer. After a water change my two new angels were gasping and acting poorly... So I plopped em into my established tank... I had quarantined for a week with general cure and ick treatment and 86 degree temp water... They look healthy enough. Will continue to treat main tank though.

I am going through the same thing. I did not know I was supposed to quarantine my new fishes. I bought 4 platies and they had some kind of parasites.. they all die caused of sunken belly. Now I am left with my female betta and now she got infected with parasites. How can I save her? I am very sad and angry for not knowing better.
Sorry John for my previous post "no quarantine?". I just assumed (yes we know what that spells LOL) you might have an extra tank. But I totally get what and why you added them to the main tank. I also had to do that in the past.

I quarantine for 4 weeks...but that has turned out to be not enough...so I now do 6 weeks...I did a few videos about my lose after having fish in quarantine for 3 weeks... some sickness you just can't see...it was weeks of work to put things right...
