In 2020, on my way to a mission field in West Africa, a young, nearly thirtyish, bank officer from Nig.... sat beside me at Heathrow Airport. He looked at my phone and wondered why I still use iPhone 5, and had the temerity to ask me the question. So, I told him that it's fully paid for and it works for me. He lectured me on how he always fly first class and come over to London on Summer holidays. He accidentally leaked out the information that his hard working mum in London still pays for some of his stuff. When he was done with his verbal diarrhea, he left because I had no more word for him. His condition was nearly beyond diagnosis. He needed rebooting. He didn't know if I had another phone. Did I really need iPhone 5 on the mission field? Beside, I had a Satellite Laptop on my lap. I had all that I needed. Next time, I might exhume my MetroPC's phone that I used in 2004 and show it to him as my personal phone. Living for others' expectation is pricey; very unwise and unnecessary. There is a time and a place for everything. Right priority. The balance.
Thank you for this Adeola, when I can to Canada in 2018, I came in as an IT guy with 5 years experience with a CCNP certificate and a BSC in computer science . I didn’t just sit down and wait for the best job. The next week I took an Amazon job as a picker, this job involved standing for almost 10 hours. Then 2 months later I went to school for a post graduate course. Now I am working as a system administrator at a very reputable company. And I have a side business that’s doing great. Most people don’t have a job and are so selective on the type of job they want. Thanks on emphasizing on Pride.
Wow another intersting topic, my sister please tell them that a lot of africans leaving in abroad are doing cleaning jobs even when they are graduattes in africa before travelling ,especially when you are leaving in a country that they dont speak english, you have to learn their language from A to Z is not easy at all but you have to work and save money for future.

Adeola you are spilling nothing but the raw truth. To be honest, I feel very bad for myself. I moved to Lagos to search for job, I got a very underpaid marketing job. I was paid below minimum wage at that time but I never mind I took it even though I was a graduate, I was just concerned with meeting target and surviving. I never thought of saving till corona happened and we were ask to go home and wait, no means of surviving. I decided to repair my old laptop and try some skills I can learn to boost my cv, it hasn't been easy surviving here all alone. But I think I will put this u have talked about in practice, I'm a great cook, I cook take pictures and leave it in my gallery (I'm scared and ashamed of what people will especially my school mates, you know being a department president, faculty DOF and graduating with 2.1: I was concerned what they will say) but I'm going to break out of that shell, my laptop crashed down and hopefully if I get money and fix it. I will do better, I will start budgeting and paying myself first and look for ways to create wealth for myself. Thank you for sharing this wisdom and I will look for this Richest man in Babylon. I look forward to amazing episodes about creating wealth.
Earlier on, I learned to be an active saver and learned about investments, thanks to my parents. Looking back now, I realize that they themselves were financially illiterate until when they were in their middle ages. Still, I think I never really learned to say no to "helping" people though. Many people ordinarily could care less about you, but only care about how you can "help" them or automatically expect you to. Even when you genuinely tell them you don't have much, you're expected to give something. I've made peace with myself, that I am ready to be vilified. Oh and damn all these crazy secondhand shops in my city. They are like, come and buy this expensive concept high class secondhand designer that costs you just an arm. 🙄

This is why experts say women are the best Finance Managers. I personally think another way to save and make more money is to create another source of income because it is risky to depend on one source of income. Depending on a single source of income is as risky as putting all your eggs in one basket.
