In April 1892, a scandalous pamphlet surfaced in Hyderabad, accusing Mehdi Hasan, a prominent Muslim nobleman, and his British wife Ellen of shocking misconduct. The pamphlet claimed Ellen had been a prostitute, alleged their marriage was a sham, and accused Mehdi of using Ellen's sexual favours to gain political advantage. Despite Mehdi's high-profile lawsuit to clear their names, the court acquitted the pamphlet's publisher, leaving the damaging allegations largely unchallenged. The scandal attracted worldwide attention and resulted in the couple’s dramatic downfall, revealing the deep cultural and political tensions of the era and showcasing the complexities of colonial India as nationalism began to rise.
