I love the differences in the dance shown during each of this group's appearances during this song. Really keeps the routine fresh. Of course, the fact that it's done to this song never hurts. ^_^
The original from LOTD and FOF with Daire Nolan as The Dark Lord Don Dorcha was PERFECT. The way he swaggered in and his menacing looks and gestures was SPOT ON. And this just goes to show that you shouldn't fuck around with perfection. The costumes are ridiculous too.
daire nolan was too stiff in the 1996 version. but over time he learns to use rest of his body doing his performance. what you can see doing feet of flames 1998. i found this costumes just ridiculous as you. i still miss don dorcha´s emblem on his chest.☹
The use of lighting, choreography and simple body language to differentiate the leader from his troops in the 96 version is significantly more effective at making him an imposing figure admiring the discipline of his men than the use of a substantially different wardrobe and flourishing motions in the 2011. This one almost makes him seem cartoonish at points. I still don’t think it’s bad... it just stands in the shadow of a legendary performance
I don't know why people are so critical about this performance. Sure, the costumes are a little over the top, but the lead dancer puts on an awesome performance. He brings a lot of energy to it, something that other performers sorely lack. Kudos.
It's the gesturing that the lead dancer did while the rest of the dancers were the focus that most folks are critical of. The energy he brought to it as part of the solo were fine, especially the opening sequence, but it was overdone when he was gesturing during the group dance. Don Dorcha in older dances was tall, quiet, and menacing without needing to go out of his way to appear as an intimidating character.
I had to look this up myself, i did notice that this is Tom Cunningham not Daire as he left the show in 2001. I will admit that i think it was a tough role to take over. People do things differently to what they think is what they want others to see, but don't forget he was stepping into someone else's shoes, although i think he did a good job as playing the Dark Lord but i will say he did "over act" his part. I even noticed that the crowd wasn't going wild as to when i first watched Riverdance back on video when i was younger with my older sisters (btw i'm not that old lol). The crowd would scream when Daire would appear on stage followed by his subordinates or minions as some people would like to say haha. The dancing is also different too which i think is good, i am sorry to say but the original ... you just cannot beat, it feels darker and evil which strangely enough made me smile as i just LOVED the music, acting and the dancing... compared to this video, i didn't get that feeling at all. Other than that i will say good job to those guys as it was a very good dance :D
"Look at me, I'm so bad aaaar arrrr, look at my biker gang costume, arrrrr arrrrr, I'm a warrior, I make warrior gestures aaaaaaaar!" I'm sorry guys, but I couldn't stop laughing because his gestures and the whole look were so distracting. In the other versions they had this quite menace, that was much more suitable and conveyed much more. This looks like someone wanted to make a parody of themselves.
I'm not saying it's easy, I'm just saying it's rather distracting. Just because a thing is not so easy to do it doesn't mean it also has it's place in everything.
As much as their dancing was good, and the music was pretty epic, their costumes kind of made a mockery of the entire thing. They look like they belong to a biker gang, not a clan of fierce Celtic warriors. I can remember seeing a version of this when I was younger, and it left me either on the edge of my seat or absolutely entranced by the beauty of the dancing. And I was about five years old, and it was something I will never forget. This, is ho-hum.
They over-exaggerate everything now and it makes it look more childish somehow. When it first came out, the original, it was so simple that it made it more menacing. Now its literally a joke. Im not saying its bad, but this is no where near the warriors dance I fell in love with. The leader just needs to calm down with his expressions and the music, they need to get the original back.
***** They really have. I have the original lord of the dance and I love it. That's the thing. People fell in love with Lord of the Dance based on the original. Why not just stick with what works and what you know people love, as opposed to changing it to the point of it almost being unrecognizable.
Ashley Campailla I can understand wanting to change things up a bit to keep it interesting, but yeah, they went way, way over the top. Warriors is my favorite dance and I loved the simplicity of the original. The amount of overacting in this one is just laughable, unfortunately.
totally agree the original was sublime, the simple eye masks and the general attitude of the leader was comanding and intimidating plus i thought the dark magic execution was just so much fitting than this gun mime
Ashley Campailla that I can very well agree on. The original dance seemed & sounded more menacing & sinister. It had more boom & thunder. The costumes also looked more traditional & simpler back then, which I preferred more. Plus, the routine itself looked slowed down for some reason.
I love this version of warriors ! Not fantasy-style warriors calm and composed like samurai. No this one looks like viking warrior, berserker. He is crazy, strong, craving for challenge, craving for more. I love this illustration.
I agree with the other comments...the older versions with Daire were 100x more menacing and entertaining. The music even sounds different! I prefer to watch my 2005 version of this than sit here and watch the How To Train Your Dragon looking armor this guy is sporting. It sucks that this version is so awful compared to the 2005. I LOVE this piece so much and it just...ugh. Just don't ever try and fix something when its not broken. I understand you have to change dancers however the warriors and the Dark Lord were loved and feared for a reason with the older version. Don't get me wrong, these dancers are amazing as hell and I adore what they do, I just don't fancy what choreography they were taught and the costumes they had to wear.
Listen, this was my favourite dance from that feet of flames Hyde park concert, but boy do they now look like Doctor Who Villains on a budget 🙈 The dancing itself looks sharp and amazing but the spIKY TROUSERS?! WHY!!
For those who actually enjoy this version of "Warriors" are probably not over the age of 20 or have never actually seen the original. I was born a year after the original performance was released in 1996 & I saw it at an early age. By 5 years old "Lord of The Dance" was my one of my all time favorites on the VHS (yes kids, we had such things known as "video tapes", & if you never heard of "Blockbuster Videos" you are too young). As for the original "Warriors" routine, it was my super favorite because it grabbed my attention the most. The costumes, the dancing & the instrumentals matched perfectly. It had that dark, evil & villainous feeling; like the villain was up to no good & was plotting something. The way the dance was carried out was perfect, not so down beat & not so over the top like this recent one. The current one, however, is a mess. It just doesn't work for me, especially the costumes & background. It's childish almost, with the spiky helmet making the kid look like a futuristic kaiser or something. And the silly wizard of oz head knockoff in the background is unnecessary really. It makes things look more kid like.I just believe the looks could've been done better. But I'm just glad the original music hasn't changed that drastically, even if it has toned down.
Apparently this section focuses on a "dark lord." Well, tbh, my Instant smart-ass remark is as follows: Aren't ya a wee bit too dramatic to be Storm Troopers, lads? 😉😜
This was good, the guys are really talented, but for me, it must be Daire. He mesmerizes me when he dances. Also, I don't like the costumes. They seem a bit silly when the original was so simple, and yet so menacing. But I take nothing away from the new leader trying to fill such big shoes - his dancing is wonderful.
Музыка могущая! А танец ещё более! Браво! Я помню Евгению Тарасову и Владимира Морозова! Эти костюмы мне не нравится, но у фигуристов прекрасные костюмы! Поздравляю.
Does anyone know of a TH-cam video/Link that has Daire Nolan being the Dark Lord that works and is viewable? All of the version I find on TH-cam are "Unavailable"... ? Not sure if it's just me or not available in my country? (US).
The sound quality on this ruins it. In the originals you really hear the tapping and the music which makes the dance so intense and mesmerising. When they all march on to the stage in the originals I get goosebumps, with this one... nothing. They are all amazing dancers and the lead has so much passion but, in my opinion, it's just missing the fire and intensity that the originals had
I have to agree with Kristen and it has nothing to do with vigor. Between the costume and the arm and facial movement there's just too much going on above the waist in this version. It's like he's trying way too hard to be tough. Daire accomplished it just with his feet.
Fantastic dancer don't get me wrong but still Daire Nolan can't be compared to he was just sensational hard to beat the originals but yes the costumes here are Ott
I'm sorry but dont get me wrong. Everything and everyone has a change dont they? So why cant lotd have a change?? I thought it was very good. And thats coming from a irish dancer.
Right? I've always said he was too jerky with his movements. Daire was incredible. They should have cast someone else. This guy isn't selling the dark lord
I'm sorry but the 1996 production was SOOO much better! First off wtf is wrong with the costumes? The og costumes were much more better. Also wtf is going on with the helmets? Also the lead is all over the place at least in the 1996 production the lead would move around but it was perfectly organized.
The 2011 henchmen look better, but the leader looks laughable. Perhaps if they use the old design for the leader and the current one for the henchmen, it would be perfect.
This guy is trying WAY too hard to show off that he's the villain. In the original the music and the intensity of the dance was enough to convey the sinister nature of the character.
Unpopular opinion I’m sure, but ‘96 was better BECAUSE it was so rigid. The stiff rigidity was a brilliant contrast to how over-exaggerated and fluid Michael played the main character. Not to mention, while this MC is a great dancer, I’m not the least bit intimidated or threatened.

I think Tom Cunningham did a great job. He did the choreography right and he sold it with as much personality as Daire did.

I think in other version they understood better that evil is more menacing when it is subtle and not "look we have spiked helmets, we so bad".
Well he has to do that it shows how comitted he is to it
I guess it is a matter of taste. I prefer a much more subtle take on "evil" and menace.
I love this concert of the year 1996 but most Hdvt

The whole album is there :)
It's on a CD "Michael Flately's Lord of The Dance".
i know this is late but if you search spotify for lord of dance warriors, you can find it
I think this dark lord over embellishes things that give it a comical look instead of evil/menacing like the original. I think he tries to over do it
Soon i´ll be able to dance the full piece.
I´m way more exhausted than these tough guys though.
Hey Micheal, Scotland Yard S.W.A.T. called, can you inform your men that, they need their gear back,Thanks! LOL!

OK,this is good, but the old versions are much better.
He really needs to calm down with the hand movements... Like most of the time the lead dancers *screamed*, danced, and walked.
who is the first guy who Dances? Don Dorcha?
Yes, played by Tom Cunningham.

The costumes make the back up dancers more fearsome. However I don't think the lead dancer can hold a torch to Daire Nolan.
fearsome really not the word I would gaudy ugly over the top maybe
+Mark Andrew Was Daire the one that took over for Michael Flatley? Which one was he?
ashli674 Daire was the original Lord Of The Dance and Feet Of Flames villain.
In my opinion they should take of the "ribbons" of the pants and the fabric that is in the helmet, that stays behind the lead dancer's head.
Was James Keegan among the "henchmen"?
Fantastic dancer don't get me wrong but still Daire Nolan can't be compared to he was just sensational hard to beat the originals but yes the costumes here are Ott
Bad guys dont look scared like he does in the beginning...sorry, the body language was just overkill for the overall act.
I don't think you appreciate Toms power. His vigor is greater than Daire's. He is however a smaller chap and not as intimidating as Daire is.

There is nothing wrong with the new costumes only the helmet of the leader is weird.
The original was intimidating and powerful. This is hilarious and not in a good way. UGH.

I think it's more the over-the-top gesturing after the solo and the biker gang look that make it less appealing. Costumes are an important part of the tradition, but the costumes here are somewhat poorly done. They could have gone with a more medieval look if they wanted to emulate armor on stage, and it would have looked much better.
