I love how the women ask Portia about her marriage expecting her to say how much work and difficulty it is, and Portia just says, "....Um, no. I love Ellen and my life feels relaxed and serene with her as my wife." And the ladies look at Portia like "...wait, are we still talking about marriage here?" The beauty of true love is boundless.
Lol Portia has the same nervous habit as me- her hands are constantly moving and rubs her fingers together. On a more serious note it sickens me that Elizabeth thinks its only the word "marriage" that is important to the gay community and not the actual act of being married, how can she be so small minded?! Portia was so polite and eloquently spoken and what she said is so true.... Love Portia forever and her and Ellen seriously have true love.
@Jebus1346 she has stated in the past that she took voice coaching to lose her Australian accent because she thought it would help her career to have an American accent living and working in America.
Loved Portia's mixed expression of disbelief and amusement when Elizabeth said her stupid analogy. xD Suspect Portia got the wrong impression of Joy though. Joy was speaking about other peoples' problem with using the word 'marriage', which is not her own view.
@BitchesCallMeTFree a lot of australians don't talk with their accents, u'd be amazed how many australians actors are out there that you wouldnt even know
How come Portia de Rossi and Simon Baker both lost their natural accents after a few years but Olivia Newton John and Paul Hogan sound exactly the same after living in the US for decades? Accents are usually set by age 12 in most humans. They haven't 'lost' their Aussie accent at all, they are just not using it anymore. What about Don Lane, Chelsea Brown and Marcia Hines? They all still sound American and they've lived in Oz for at least 30 years.
@TheVictoriaGaga Oh, ok I didn't know that. I listen for her aussie accent and can't hear it! Re Simon Baker, I heard an interview with him once on 'Today Tonight' and his accent was full on American even with an Aussie reporter! That's why I thought that. Mel Gibson's another one I don't get. I know he was born in the US but he was educated here and I just can't understand how he lost ALL of his Mad Max/Gallipoli accent. There's not a trace.
Only Elisabeth and Sherri would be likely to have a problem with it. Whoopie and Joy have been outspoken against Prop 8. Barbara is Barbara. So what do you mean?
Hugh Laurie doesn't speak in an American accent in real life. Think about any interview shows he's been on. When he's not playing a character, he speaks with a British accent. Portia speaks with an American accent all the time. It's legitimate to ask why she doesn't have an Australian accent in real life.
But that isn't what the word stereotype means. Stereotype means "a widely held and oversimplified image or idea." By definition, a stereotype isn't personal to me--it's widely held. It isn't a stupid question, as you asserted, to ask why Portia doesn't speak with an Australian accent when she's not in character. It says a lot about you that you imply her question was "dumb" when your inaccurate comparison really is, as it proves you wrong.
What do you mean "announce?" It's not like it's a secret, she and Ellen both talk about it all the time in public. I mean ALL THE TIME. And not to put too fine a point on it, but she's not an "Aussie" anymore, except by birth. She's an American citizen. What's your point?
it's hilarious to me how other straight people don't want the gays to get married cause it'll "ruin" marriage. Then the moment a gay person talks about her experience with marriage, that it's loving and relaxing, they lose their minds that someone's actually "happily" married.
@Jebus1346 People tend to revert back to their first language, or real accent, when upset. She probably let their comments about marriage sink in for a moment, and felt a little annoyed. She didn't look very happy by the end of the interview. I wouldn't be either if someone had just questioned my right to love my partner on the same terms as everyone else.
Quite sparse applause from the audience to what she's saying. Makes me realise how far we've come in the 6 years since it was aired. Still a long way to go though to make things equal. Keep going.
I(adore, love admire & wish. PORTIA & ELLEN THE BESTEST MARRIAGE IN THE. WHOLE WIDE WORLD& CONGRADULATION ON THEIR. RELATIOBSHIP THAT WILL LAST FOREVER & EVER!!!!!!!!
What stereotypes? You brought up Hugh Laurie! He IS a successful working actor, and DOES NOT speak with an American accent when interviewed on American talk shows. He proves you wrong. Is that WHY you consider the question "dumb?" Because it makes you look dumb?
Haha yeah I heard the Aussie accent creeping in as well :P I love Portia and she really did a great job in this interview. That hasselbeck's analogy was terrible... Sorry but I really can't stand her!
I love when she says the word "anything". Her Australian accent comes through!
I love how the women ask Portia about her marriage expecting her to say how much work and difficulty it is, and Portia just says, "....Um, no. I love Ellen and my life feels relaxed and serene with her as my wife."

She's wonderful.
Oh Portia you were so beautiful.
You're right, Portia! Everyone should have the same right.
Discrimination on the grounds of religious belief is not acceptable.
the questions are so borderline offensive I'm glad Portia's just so poised here istg
I love that Whoopi's just sat there agreeing with little 'mhmm's' every now and then!

LOL!!! Joy "I think I have to turn"... she's the best of the View.. and Whoopi
Lol Portia has the same nervous habit as me- her hands are constantly moving and rubs her fingers together. Too bad ass for words.
she is soooooooooooooooooo smart!
Does anyone know if her 2003 The View interview is available on the internet somewhere?
Loved Portia's mixed expression of disbelief and amusement when Elizabeth said her stupid analogy. xD
Suspect Portia got the wrong impression of Joy though. Joy was speaking about other peoples' problem with using the word 'marriage', which is not her own view.

She's a working actress. To get parts here she would have had to wear it away. Think Hugh Laurie.
Maria Welser she is from australia.
I like how she says "was anything"
@TheVictoriaGaga Oh, ok I didn't know that. I listen for her aussie accent and can't hear it!

I love how her accent came through at 7:37. She is such a class act.
she's so beautiful and also appears to be smart!
You can tell the hosts don't agree with Portie being a Lesbian! ;(
@toddles9 i've been living in the uk for 10 years and now have a fairly strong english accent, however when i go home to Oz, the aussie gets stronger.
@BitchesCallMeTFree acutally she trained herself to get rid of it
Hugh Laurie doesn't speak in an American accent in real life. Think about any interview shows he's been on. When he's not playing a character, he speaks with a British accent. interesting detail....non of the Ladies of The View with naked legs...coincidence...? btw same situation appeared then Ellen was a guest The View...
Stereotypes strewn everywhere. Oh well. I'll consider even the dumbest questions as legitimate from now on.
But that isn't what the word stereotype means. Stereotype means "a widely held and oversimplified image or idea." By definition, a stereotype isn't personal to me--it's widely held. @sam0xin hehe, yeah, like any of them could get portia...
i thought she was from australia. wheres that accent?

"What do i mean?"
About what exactly are you referring to? :/.....
What stereotypes? You brought up Hugh Laurie! He IS a successful working actor, and DOES NOT speak with an American accent when interviewed on American talk shows. He proves you wrong. Is that WHY you consider the question "dumb?" Because it makes you look dumb?
@sam0xin amen to that!
@Jebus1346 I bet if you asked Elizabeth if she would be fine being not married but something else to her husband she would be freaking out.
I love how speak Portia, don't know... Her accent *-*
@EliseWhatever her legs are gorgeous btw.....
Ich liebe MEINE BESSERE Hälfte ❤
Haha yeah I heard the Aussie accent creeping in as well :P I love Portia and she really did a great job in this interview. That hasselbeck's analogy was terrible... Sorry but I really can't stand her!
Elizabeth: Classy
Portia: Trashy
Whoopi: Ashy
