Good that he has now learnt that letting kids be Simple & Natural is the Best way to go. This is like going back to his early roots in movie making where he usually choose new & unknown actors/ actress ( rather than major Stars) as his main cast.
I thought these kids singing was the most beautiful part of the opening of the Beijing Winter Olympics, hearing the story behind them makes it even more beautiful.

There is quite a lot of support but perhaps not enough people willing or able to give their time and money. Before COVID I was to teach kids music in a village in Gansu, as a volunteer, from my discussions with the village authorities it was apparent that resources were there, but not the people to utilize them. After COVID I hope I can fulfill my promise. I must say also that the efforts of the CPC authorities who have done an amazing job of rebuilding the village, and ensuring the comfort of the villagers are amazing and beautiful in their own right. We can all help kids from poor villages, and inspire them to all forms of art, donate a violin, a guitar, a movie camera,,,,,, or our time, as a westerner, the short time I spent helping my Chinese friend teach English to Chinese kids was pure joy

After learning the background of these rural children from the mountains who under the guidance of a very dedicated music volunteer, it gives so much meaning to their performance at the Beijing Winter Olympic ceremony. The famous director Zhang Yimou had a lot of excellent humanitarian messages in the opening program of the Winter Olympics. But they didn’t get reported in widely in the western media. We should help spread his message wherever we can. The world deserves to know the truth about how much good China is doing.
What are the GPS coordinates of the village? I very much would like to ‘’visit’’ it. Maybe it does not even exist in Googlemaps yet, I see that they did not have time to plant trees. In 3:23 we see new buildings that need 1/7 of the ground space of single-family homes. They only need to heat 1/6 of the walls also. Walking to school is a short distance and there are few streets to maintain. The children play by learning a different language, besides music, which is the international one. Later on, they will realize the magnitude of what they did. China was confident enough to be represented by the grade school kids of a mountainous village instead of the Beijing opera artists. If I did not look at the faces and did not discern a very slight accent, I would not have believed that they were not born next to my home in Greece. For the last 2500 years the Greek philosophers and the laws consider Greeks not those who share the same geographical space or the same ancestors with us, but those who share the same culture. Those kids seem Greek to me.
Poverty has been eliminated in Malan village two years ago when ALL the families were housed in apartments with electricity, telephone, water, wifi,tv and all children enrolled to school.

In another documentary, it talked about Malan village was invaded by the Japanese, and the old music teacher teaching the choir is a lucky survivor as a kid from the Journalist dad. To thank the people in Malan village, she went back to teach the villagers' kids singing every week.
China's success clearly is the concerted effort and dedication of the Chinese people themselves. Their dedication is unparalleled, no wonder their country have reached the status that they are in now.
This is a very moving story of humanity, full of hope to the troubling world.
World should re recognize China, this is not sth which could happen in what so called a country with no freedom. Don't misuse this word anymore.
