I spent a weekend in Manchester last April, the weather was beautiful which really allowed us to explore the city on foot. I was hugely impressed. It's not only a city of glass towers, but also has restored many of the fine buildings from its industrial past. Quite a balance to do that, being both a victorian city and a city of the 21st century simultaneously. And the older buildings give it a human feel and sense of history at street level modern cities just don't have.
Loved that you caught so much movement at street level, particularly the metrolink and trains...really helped to show scale. One of the best skyline films I've seen.
The 76 Storey Sister of Viadux was announced today being the tallest building ever built in regional Britain. That means that there are now three 70 plus structures to be constructed in Manchester/Salford. It is the shock city of the 21st century.

It grinds every banana skin into the ground. It is unique in Britain that it actually believes in itself. It does things without all the huge subsidies London gets. It is a prototype for how to do things differently from the clueless Westminster clowns who have no ambition for Britain, and less creativity than a crash test dummy.

Why should the City of Manchester be the second City and not Birmingham. the reason that Birmingham is the Second City and Second largest city is the huge size of the City of Birmingham being 150sq miles in area and a population of 1.5 million citizens as against the City of Manchester being 58sq miles in area and a population of 580,000 citizens making the City of Manchester the 6th largest City in the UK and Birmingham City Centre looks fantastic too

Wow, I've been gone 10 years and its certainly changed in that time. Beetham Tower stood alone back then. I bet Picadilly Gardens are just as dingy as before though.
The city has around 560 thousand, the urban area around 2.8 million and the metropolitan area around 3.4 to 3.5 million. It is very comparable to Warsaw or Athens in population.
The city of Manchester proper is just over 500,000.. add on Stockport, Oldham, Rochdale, Bury, Wigan and Bolton plus a few others the population is nearer 1.5 million, the metropolitan Borough of Greater Manchester is well over 2 million, confusing the Borough with the city population is very common

That’s… not what “15 minute cities” means. I have no idea how something as benign as an urban planning concept that towns should be developed so that supermarkets, coffee shops and urban transit should be an easy 15-minute walk away from people’s homes instead of being forced to drive everywhere, managed to become some ridiculous conspiracy theory that the government is planning to lock people up in their neighbourhoods or something. If I was to guess, a mixture of the anti-transit car lobby that want to stop all house building combined with a ton of people loosing their absolute minds during the whole Covid thing. The same people who think the world is run by lizard people found a bunch of urban planning documents, thought the term sounded scary and decided to add it to their delusional narrative. It’s a shame people like you have fell for it. But anyway, Manchester city centre already *is* a 15-minute city - if you live in one of these residential towers or city centre apartments then you’re already just a few minutes walk away from basically everything you need as far as shopping and food goes, and probably a short train or tram ride away from your place of employment. From where I live I’m just a few minutes away from a lovely coffee shop and the bars and shops near St Peter’s Square. Truly, an absolutely terrifying concept.
