Td50 is raw unedited samples. For the peeps comparing sounds, You're not supposed to play the td50 stock, those are templates. Whereas the 30 is already edited kits. With the 50 you are supposed to make the sounds from the templates to get anything you want. Check out Alan VEX Bonham kit for an example of kit creation in a td50.

@@mikeysplayhouse1971 There are. Alan VEX just put out how to create a Bonham kit out of their infinity pack. If you already have a decent sample library you don't have to buy anything. Just use what you have... or buy the pack. Either way is fine.

Td50 is still modelled sounds layered with one shot samples from a couple of acoustic snare, like the drum-tec snare pack, they hit the snare once and the sample is layered with the module, and for that they want 50€...
You can do all the editing you want with the TD-50, but it will never sound as good as the TD-30. Just like the TD-27 doesn't sound as good as the TD-25. Roland clearly made a step back with this new generation of modules in terms of sound quality. Almost everything sounds dry, dead, like it's from a record from the 70s or something. No punch, weak sounds.
Nice video. I was not really a fan of the td50 for a good year until a friend of mine educated me on the td50 and how to actually utilize it properly. Mainly that the the stock sounds in the module are templates. Your not really supposed to play them raw. I mean you can, but they are not so good in that fashion. I think once you spend some quality time with layering in samples into the td50, you'll find the reason why there's only a couple rides, snares, etc. The td50 is a sound's creation station. A guy can make any sound they want with the td50. I've built some solid kits in the last 6 months. Zeppelin, to Motley, to Def Leapard, to Marvin Gay, to jazz and progressive rock. It took some time to understand and become fluent in how samples affect the overall sound but I've become pretty efficient at it. The limit of the sounds of the td50 is only equal to the size of your sample library. It's a really great feature I enjoy a lot. Again, tho. Nice job. Two of the best modules ever made. Bravo!

I’m in love with my TD-50 kit. Took a little while but I got all the sounds nailed and the snare and ride make a tremendous difference
420protoman lmao. I’m self employed but that don’t matter. I’ve owned the TD-3 then the Td-10. I sold off some parts which held a good amount of the value then financed the rest at 0% fir a year through musicians friend. 10 years in the making till I got a flagship model.
This is probably my favorite video so far. You dove in this deep and its very comprehensive. Still prefer the 30 but Its awesome to see them both this in depth. Nice job.

Great video. It's nice to see all the sounds that are in the td30 and td50 side by side. Especially since I plan on getting one those modules eventually. I was really surprised by the number of acoustic sounds in the td30, but I think I'd rather get the td50 just because I love the options when it comes to tweaking and making custom kits. I've spent countless hours messing with my td17 module, but I'd love to see what I could do with the td50.
Hey Justin - great video. You really covered both modules really well. I personally like TD30 better, but some of the features on TD50 are great, like sampling, digital snare and cymbal, etc. I noticed you're playing TD17 snare. That's my favorite snare, and not too expensive.
I initially bought the TD 50 as a replacement for my TD 30. The TD 30 itself was a replacement for the TD 20 that came with the V-Pro kit I bought a long time ago. Recently I added the two digital pads, ride and snare, and I must say that now that I have those I could never go back to playing the TD 30 as they make such a difference and would not want to lose them.

I hope you plan to put together a video on how to create instruments in the td50 by layering in samples, and editing them. That's a primary feature of the td50 and what sold me on it over the 30. It's what the module was made for and what Prismatic Sound Modeling is all about. I'm sure you've seen Alan VEX Bonham kit creation. Maybe doing something like that as well and showing a before and after to highlight that key feature that sets it apart from pretty much everything else on the market.

This is a good video. I like getting into the nitty gritty of what the module actually does because this is what I'm going to have to do. Grind through the kits, the drums and tweak the settings. Very useful thank you.

Great Video and Info Justin. I really think its tough to choose one or the other. Fortunately for me when I bought my TD-50, I held onto to my TD-30. I connected them both via Midi so that I could have the best of both Modules. When you have both connected you can use either the TD-50 or the TD-30 Module alone, or use both at the same time. You can mix and layer the sounds of both modules. Another advantage of this is, because I have them connected via Midi, I can trigger both the Digital Snare and Digital Ride with the TD-30 Module.

I just upgaded from Td20 to TD30, and I could not be happier. The samples and physics (reaction) are a quantum leap better. At home, I can't justify a TD-50. A pro that plays the TD-50 for a country star just sent me his settings that were done by a sound pro for live shows. The TD-30 does more than you show here. My "pro" ballad snare sound better than factory.

I went from a TD6V in 2005, a TD10 in 2013, a TD30 in 2016 and just recently snagged a TD50. I found that the TD30 out of the box was just fantastic. Very little editing was needed to put together a dynamite sounding kit on it. However over time, it did seem that the sounds could have used a bit of help that the module just wasn't capable of. But then the lack of sounds on the 50 was a bit disconcerting in the beginning, but holy crap that is all made up for the editing options. The versatility you get now is quite profound, and with the option to sample your own sounds on it with the SD card slot is such a game changer. It always seemed that Roland reused the same old sounds over and over again, but just used slighter better recordings of each. But now, being able to sample very specific drums and use those, I couldn't be happier! I sampled my set of Tama Mini Tymps, and I have that one snare drum in my collection that I could never replicate on one of these modules, but now it can happen. All in all, I still highly recommend the TD30, however the TD50 is quickly becoming the favored module. The design of it alone is a vast improvement having the XLR outputs, the dual sized headphone outs, the knobs for adjusting parameters on the fly, and I feel the buttons themselves are a bit more spaced out and not super clustered together like on the 30. I do agree that the Motorola Razr size screen needs to change eventually. There's too much information to be dealing with to have it all crammed into such a tiny display screen. For such an expensive machine with so much stuff to do on it, you need more than 5 or 6 lines worth of screen space. Great video man!
I agree, the TD30 has a bit of something that makes some sounds more audibly pleasant over the 50, at least in the default sounds, I imagine the 50 can beat it with editing, but that is something I dont want to have to do.
Tip for the TD50 snare: layer a walnut with the maple oil, do some minor tinkering, and you'll have such a better sound. With a good sound setup, the digital snare is just a dream to play for those coming from an acoustic.
The Studio X expansion pack by VEX saved me a lot of time too. The idea of spending more money for the 50 sucks, but I think the time I saved made it worth it. Although I think anyone should tinker with it themselves first. Learning about what the different wire types, different "attack" settings, etc. do to the sound is a nice learning experience.
I watched a ton of different (acoustic) ride cymbals just before you posted this video, and when I opened the video, I see that you're doing the exact same thing, only with electronic cymbals. :D Anyway, maybe I'm deaf, or it just rings in my head by listening to 50 different cymbals, but I think I like more cymbal sounds from the TD30.

I'm biassed of course but i do favour the TD-30 it appears to have lot's more sounds/options the only things i'd like from the td 50 is the multi track over USB and sample loading...and to be honest i'd get an alesis strike or use my Yamaha multi12 to add user samples.
Other way around. The 50 is a creation station with unlimited sound possibilities due to the importing feature combined with about 10x more editing points. The Strike trumps all in the sounds department. I've had one since preorder, so 2 years. I've a td50kvxs since last summer. Like both equally, although for different reasons.

You should hook up the Mimic Pro and TD 50 into one massive e-rig, highlighting the virtues of both modules. The snare and ride of the 50, mutiple manufacturer's pads hooked up on the Mimic, like Roland and Yamaha all working together. The best sound samples from both, etc.

Fascinating! The ride customization on TD-50 is golden. I understand that you can use VST but sometimes AOI single module solution giving more convenient eg. Taking a striped down TD-50 to Wedding Gigs. Digital Pads are the future, IMO.

As a working drummer I’ve used both in many “House kit” instances where the drums are the house kit and what you use. Granted I’d rather play the real thing with that being said I’ve used both modules and highly prefer the 30. The 50 sounds terrible and takes forever to get a decent tone out of. At least live. The other is fatter quicker.
Well I can’t tell you how long I’ve waited for this video! 😃 Awesome comparison Justin 👍 I just love my TD30 for the vast library of pre-edited sounds to choose from. The TD30 is the best of both worlds, HUGE onboard library of sounds PLUS some decent editing capabilities. People forget that all the TD30 templates can be edited as well, but you also have the advantage of so many sounds already set up for you. It’s the TD30 all the way for me.

All down to what your preferences are I had a TD30 for 3 years excellent kit but now I have the TD50 and I absolutely love the one shot sampling layering, as a music producer and drummer it gives me more scope for individuality when I’am editing sounds. The digital snare and ride alone is a big upgrade in respect to feel and playability.
You wanted to know about latency. My output is 3.9 and buffering 5.8 . I’m using a Focusrite 2i4 second gen. Ez2

Hey Justin - Great video. Did you do anything specific inside of the td30 and 50 modules to allow the pdx12 snare to trigger so nicely? Did you tweak the sensitivity or anything? I've been using the pdx12 with a td25 module and cannot get it respond with the same consistency as the pdx100 or 85 pads. Thanks again
Hi Justin, Just upgraded my Drum-Tec kit with a Hand Hammered Diabolo Series with a TD30 module. The center triggering is amazing with no hot spotting and full head sensitivity. The Drum-Tec Hand Hammered Diabolo drums blow the ATVs and the Roland line out of the water. FYI. I am selling a few brand new Drum-Tec "Jam Stage" drums and hardware on eBay.

well I have a TD30 owned it for three years and I can get a lot out of it, I am a bit of an editing expert (so I thought) ..I had no idea there were a couple of snares you could edit further (strainer, shell material) I just found a few I really liked and tweaked them even more ..I'm in an 80's band and make good use of the processed kits INXS Duran Duran material ..thanks Justin you just made the TD30 more interesting to me, are there decent processed sounds in the TD50 similar to the TD30 ..I would love to buy a backup and getting another TD30 (it's a lot of cash for the same) or do I have to sample some of the sounds I love and transfer them to the TD50 ...sounds like a lot of work

I have a TD20SX kit and I'm thinking of upgrading the module. Do either the TD30 or TD50 require different, more modern pads with new triggering to get the most sound out of the modules, or will they work fine with my TD20SX pads?
Which one do you think has better sounds TD17 or TD30?
Really useful..I live bi coastal and have a TD30 in NYC, and a TD50 in London, and I prefer the 30 overall, better sounds, but wish I could add the snare and ride of the 50 with their new capabilities, to it.
My future includes SD3 . I’m only interested in those samples. But the snare and hihats mapping in the td50 and SD3 is probably better. Maybe not. Maybe the best mapping comes from the SD3 anyway. I got email from Reverb today. TD50 $1850. Last week a TD30 was $1200. If I’m using the SD3 samples the digital inputs don’t matter, do they?
So as of today would you go with td50 or td30 KV? They seem pricey still to this day.
I have a Roland TD15 frankeinstein with 2box Drumit 3 and Alesis strike module.
Is there a way to link the td 30 and the td 50 together and have them both share the drum pads input triggers and have the benefit of both sounds by just pressing the drum samples....? Or do they have to be isolated and connected to only one at a time?
one question, if you can layer sounds on the TD50, and import single shot samples, can't you import multiple samples and layer them that way?
I've grown to really love the TD-50, the pads and cymbals too. The digital snare and ride cymbal alone make it worth the extra $1,000. You'd pay that much buying a drum-tec snare and an ATV ride anyway. If you took some time with that ride cymbal you'd get addicted to it. There's really no comparison to any other e-ride. It is amazing. If they come up with digital hi hats for that extra usb input (fingers crossed) it's another game changer. But only two rides is really absurd. Same with the limited selection of snares and bass drums. Editing them sort of makes up for it but you have to do a lot more work to get the sounds you want. I could do without about half the kits on the module, especially the cheesy electronic kits. Those are just downright embarrassing although I could see how someone doing 80's pop covers might want them. I just want a wide selection of acoustic kits. VEX and drum-tec expansion packs are great and have lots of usable kits. If you have the money I'd go as far to say that the TD-50 was worth buying just for the digital ride and digital snare. Btw, listening to you demo the sounds on my monitor system at home the TD-50 sounded a lot better.

I know this video is older and you may not comment but hoping you will. I have a hybrid kit (acoustic with 2 PD-105s, 1 K-8). I bought a TD-11 and hate it. The drum sounds are really electronic and the machine-gunning kills me. However, I do like the ability to be able to have one trigger sound on the pad and another on the rim. I have spent DAYS looking over the internet for a reasonable module that has "close to acoustic" sound and won't machine gun and is compatible with my pads.
I understand the Mimic Pro is probably what would be best but a bit out of my range. Suggestion? Please?
Is the editing on TD50 easier than TD30. I haven't really tried because it looks a tad complicated. Not happy (bored) with TD30 std kits. Often snare sounds will vary so much with loud cracks when played slightly off the repeat place on the skin. Whilst some variation like a normal like you'd expect with acoustic kits it changes sonically so much it can be off putting. Is it only me that has experienced this on TD30? Is the TD50 any better in regard to this sticking placement consistency? tks
The 50 has so much more potential that what is evident from a demo of the stock sounds. There is also alot less machine gunning on the 50. I havent heard a 30 since I got rid of mine for the 50 and that was the first thing I noticed was the machine gunning. VEX that 50 and 30 and do another comparison!
Agreed the machine gunning made my preference easy. TD50 all day long 😍 The sample rate is key when you use different sounds for each hit even at equal velocities it sounds so much more natural. Now if I could just get the guys in my church to buy into electric drums🤔

The one thing that stands out to me in all these videos is the td-30 snares always seem to have less of that machine gun effect than the td-50. Specifically at higher speed single strokes. Or is it in my head?

However, I have some questions you or any of your viewers might be able to answer.
1. Is the version such as k, kv or kvx related to the connected pads or does it depend on the sound module? Meaning are there different sound modules such as td50, td50k, td50kv or td50kvx etc.?
2. Can I connect e.g. a td17 drumset to a td50 or td30 sound module?
3. How about using a drum synthesizer via midi? I have the groove agent from Steinberg and the drum sounds from Simon Phillips. Does it work well also?

My teacher owns a td20 and a td30. I just think its worth buying the td 30 because it almost have similarities to the td 20 except it had more features and a better quality. Theres no lcd screen problems because it uses led lights compared to td 20 lcd screen problems. I was able to play the td20 on stage and rehearsals and i love it to bits. The toms pads are a bit bigger on td20 and it uses two piece vh12 hi hats that feels like a real hihat compared to the td 30 which has smaller tom pads, can use vh10,vh11,vh12 hi hats. I would get td30 than get td50 its simple because its cheaper and it has similarities to td20.

Hi, actually you can base that comparison on this one, as TD-25 is based on those same TD-30 internal sounds and with the TD-17 having a selection of the TD-50 sounds, including the better cymbals.
E-drum companies seem really good at taking strides forward and leaps backward every time something new comes out. Screens, buttons, sounds, even the power buttons. The TD30 has a better power switch than the TD50. Little things are as important as the big things. I wish I could take all the great things about every drum module that I like, improve some as needed, and smash them all together into one unit. It would be finally the unity that everyone wants and dreams of.

B. C. Schmerker not sure what you mean. Are you asking how many outputs you have? TD-50 offers 3 USB digital slot for the PD-140DS and CY-18DR. If you use those, you cannot use the normal snare and ride outputs.

When you play an acoustic set you generally only have one snare sound unless you have a Cornacopia of wealth Then you could have a snare collection to choose from then even still you are limited with a drum module you become quite spoiled... Of course there's nothing replacing the feel of an acoustic snare.. Problem is there's no volume knob on an acoustic set Which can be a deal breaker for many players...its a give and take that's how life rolls.. Buda tish...
So if I bought a td-30 with sd3 It would be cheaper and have more features overall?

Lostcar About The faders working with drum software I am unsure. But if you are in fact interested in the faders I would suggest perhaps the Alesia Strike module, it’ll cost you a hell of a lot less in the wallet.
Lostcar Are you purchasing a full kit? Take into account the durability and quality that Roland pads have. If you were only buying a module to go with SD3 I would get the Alesis Strike module, but if you are buying the full package, perhaps go with one of the Roland kits. Since you are going to be using SD3, the main difference you’re looking at between the TD30 and the 50 is the Snare pad and the Ride. Given that the sounds won’t matter, it’s the feel of the two pads that really the only difference. While the Snare and the Ride of the TD50 are easily the best on the market, I personally would not say that they are worth the extra $1,000. Do a little more research on the pads and even better if you can, I would highly advise that you go and play one for yourself. They’re on the floors of most Guitar Centers and the like. There’s no better way to judge the feel of a drum than to play it for yourself. If you’re going to be using some pads from different manufacturers then be sure to check compatibilities to ensure there won’t be any issues. Roland modules do not usually have compatibility problems other than high hats.

Man these all sound like keyboard presets to me ..... They shouldn't be trying to sell these high $ things unless they got the kind of headroom that could be put into a console directly as if the drummer is right there micd up. These all sound suished up and compressed to me. You have to process the hell out of them to do anything with. The modules should be 32bit BluRay style output or DSD hi res audio format
Why do You hate the entry level Roland td 1 so much? It is a great beginner set. cool handpicked sounds.
I think a person should buy the 50 only if you are going to use the digital snare and cymbal. If you’re on SD3 all the time get the 30 and save the 💰
RolandTd30 (£1500)or td27kv2(£2300)? Probably won't be doing much gigging with it or overly elaborate recording. Basically, old flagship or new high/mid level with the new digital pads and coach mode... cannot decide.
The td-50 sounds more like real drums. It doesn't give me that awful fake sound feeling that the td-30 gives
I only record so the midi data from the TD-30 is more than enough. For practicing too it is quite sufficient. If I played live I might have had to reconsider. That being said the Toms on the TD-50 are still utterly synthetic sounding. Compare them to something like Superior Drummer or the Mimic Pro, there is just no comparison.

Am I the only one who thinks the TD30 absolutely decimates the 50? I understand the potential of the digital triggers and everything, but in terms of sound quality, it's not even close. The ride cymbal samples were the one bright spot for the TD50, they sounded a bit clearer and more detailed than the 30.
Td50 is raw unedited samples. You're not supposed to play them stock whereas the 30 is already edited kits. With the 50 you are supposed to make the sounds from the templates to get anything you want.

Those td30 sounds sound very similar to the td12 sounds.
Same sound engineer did both modules, but the quality on the TD30 is better
Do what I did. Buy a used TD15 (The TD30's baby brother) module for the kick and snare. Buy a used TD17 module (The TD50's baby brother) for the toms and cymbals.
This just confirms for me that the roland naming conventions are ... I don't really have a words for it
just buy a td 17 or the lowest module that will work with superior drummer or steven slate software and save your money.
My only concern with VSTs is latency, especially with playing live...but I guess I’ll find out!

The 30 is basically mix ready so I still think that module takes it IMO.
I absolutely hate the samples that integrate snare buzz into them. If I want snare buzz who needs electronic drums, I can play a real drum set if i want that annoyance.
You can take it out man, they just have it as an option to use or not use.
TD-30 sound better, but both are not realistic sound, they sound Roland sound.
I've got more rides on my 500$ TD 11 module than this 2400$ TD 50 module has to offer... shame

@prawnsdrumchannel - Hey, I use td-50 as my main module and td 25 as my secondary module. Basically I map the output of td 25 to td 50s module in order to use both modules at the same time.
@prawnsdrumchannel - Yeah but I had roland td25kv before 50. So kept them for a while together and I recently sold it. Now planning to buy an Alesis strike pro se in its replacement. I like the acoustic look of it and the module is good too.

EchoFox 69 how so? Digital is the obvious next step and they play better than any other electronic ride or snare on the market by far.
@@nickcds3419 Do you reckon every pad will be USB eventually? Never heard of a USB cable snake. I wonder if they'll go Micro or Mini USB individually or if every pad will connect to some sort of merger hub that will then pass the information to the module with one cable. Interested to see how these next steps will be taken--if they take the steps at all.
