How to Train your Dog to FOCUS!

  • We released a video, showing off some of our dogs working through heavy distractions, and now this is how we've done it! Belgian Malinois, Kilo, has been conditioned to look Lance in the eyes for food ever since he was a puppy. This concept is simple and sweet: if the dog is looking at you, it's hard to be distracted because he can't see them! This concept transcends utility in training, as it can fix a whole lot of problems! If you like more how-to style videos, please leave a comment below. Hi Lance, great video however, you said this dog has been doing this since he was a puppy. Given the number of rescue dogs that are out there today, it would be good to hear some advice on this type of training with an older dog that’s had its training neglected. For example, we took in a two year old female German shepherd rescue one year ago (so she is three now) that had little to no training. She was basically a COVID puppy that was left to her own devices in the back yard, no socialisation (with other dogs, environments, men (all female household), etc.), and as I said, very little training.
    I’ve worked with her this past year to firstly get her used to her new home, and then worked on other basic training like walking nicely on leash, sit/down/stay commands and her recall is pretty good when there’s no distractions like other dogs. However, as soon as there is another dog around, she has to go meet it and will pull heavily to get to it. I use food and toys to try to hold her focus and slowly she is getting it but it’s going to take time. Any tips for an older dog like this would be appreciated.
    Just thought if you’re looking for new video ideas, you might want to consider a series focused on teaching older rescue dogs and their owners. Here in the UK, shelters are busting at the seams with untrained rescue dogs after the pandemic situation where people just went out and bought a dog to help them get through it but now they don’t seem to want them any more.
    Helping those who are taking on these rescues would be greatly appreciated. Just an idea. What do you think? 🤔

      The video is pretty much the same for a young and old dog. It's all about timing. The dog looks at you click reward. Then, you push the envelope as comprehension happens. In the future I will probably do one with a green dog that has no experience to help show that picture. We in the US have the same problems with the shelters, so I definitely hear you on that. Thanks for watching and giving your input.

    This was great and right on time for me! Can't thank you enough. Mia my 62% GSD, 27% American Pit and 11% American Staffordshire Terrier, won't be 2 until May, got her at 9 months from the shelter where she was adopted as a puppy and returned at 8 months, has doggy ADD. I'm going to try this. She is all over the place, her attention span is 5 seconds. I'll update in a month. Fingers crossed 🤞. ❤️🐾

    Great advice. I need to get a clicker. I adopted a sweet shepherd mix from the shelter a month ago. She is around 10 months old. She has a bundle of energy which i can handle, but she loves to put rocks and pebbles in her mouth. When i say no, she thinks i am playing with her. So, i am needing that clicker and the treat pouch is a good idea too. Thank you

    My pup is a 3.5 month old working line shepherd and in class they had us teaching focus and she does well but sometimes shell just bark and i dont know what to think of that. Sometimes she just wont focus and wants to bark at me.

    • @ultimate-k9
      @ultimate-k9  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      She is being demanding, which is ok. You just never reward for that. You can put her away as soon as she barks. If you crate her for 5 -10 mins, then bring her back out and start again, she will learn that barking interupts reward or you need to learn to reward her before she barks because you might be pushing the duration of focus to long. Focus should be a calm intensity. I never ever teach a dog to bark at me for any reason. It opens a pandoras box to bossy behavior of barking at you for all types of frustrations. Hope this helps.

      @ultimate-k9 that's very helpful. Thank you for your response. I look forward to watching more of your videos. She is my first working line and is much different from my previously owned show lines. I am hoping she can be a family pet as she matures as the vet said it's more difficult. The biting phase was so far the toughest. The trainer instructed scuffing but that seemed to make her worse so we now are trying the hand over snout using the loose lip area to tuck upwards so she thinks she biting herself as she is biting us. Seems to be working much better. Hope that's an OK method for correction.
