To clarify about why Kidz Bop songs exist, I think it’s because it’s easier to put on a playlist. I used to run a martial arts studio and the kids LOVED when I put on kidz bop. Plus, the Kidz Bop have to get a mechanical license to record a version of the song, so the main artist is still making money. Win win for the conservative parents that want to keep their kids listening to PG music, and artist/label make money off it too. I just feel it’s fallen off since most kids nowadays are able to access the uncensored version so easily via streaming. And as you mentioned, artists more regularly release clean versions of songs now (at least from my perspective. Maybe just cause I’m paying more attention to musical releases.)

    • @jessl406
      @jessl406 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Exactly! KidzBop originated during a time when people purchased actual CDs, like, for car rides and stuff. No parent was gonna sit down and burn a CD with a mix of clean KidzBop songs with (OG) singers' songs that happened to be clean. I would think of songs like "Dance Monkey" to just be "album filler."
On another note though, especially *how* KidzBop has survived in the streaming era.. I think parents nowadays might prefer KidzBop because it's "anonymous." "KidzBop" is seen as a brand in itself. Like, it's a trusted producer of quality, easy, mess/drama free, "anonymous" entertainment. The entertainer is not needed nor marketed as a role model; there's nothing parents have to follow up on or explain because the brand itself is "clean popular/trending songs" and not an actual person/celebrity.

Hi Naomii! It is difficult for me to be critical of an artist's debut. It is part of a learning curve for many. As for the admissions of disliking their earlier work, I like that honesty. Just as in any industry, the more new to a specific area errors are made. Additionally, individuals that are new are less likely to disagree with their higher ups. Examples of this are Katy Perry. She did not like the song, "I Kissed a Girl." Even stellar writers like the late Toni Morrison had stated that years later she would be embarrassed by some error she came across in an earlier work.

I think the merch one was referring to eras plural merch, like merch that features elements of all eras up to that point (e.g. Eras tour poster shirts) rather than just merch from a previous era. It becomes outdated with new releases because it stops depicting all the eras once a new one begins post creation of the design. This creates an opportunity for new and updated eras themed merch that includes this new era for people to buy and then the cycle continues ad infinitum

I think when it comes to icon or legend status it’s about legacy more than anything else. Someone like Charli I would absolutely call an icon at this point even though her debut is only a decade old just bc she’s been so innovative and left a strong mark. But then someone like Madonna, her music was never the most innovative stuff, but she really impacted the way pop stars brand themselves-icon status obtained.
You become an icon when you *do* something iconic, really. And a legend is someone who sustains that icon status across multiple albums or eras, becoming a career icon in a way. Beyoncé went from a great pop star to an icon when she dropped self titled, and she became a legend when she dropped Lemonade. But someone like Dua had one iconic album in Future Nostalgia, but hasn’t replicated that enough to deserve legend status yet.

i love Bebe, but i think Ellie Goulding is way more fitting for the "Queen of Electronic Dance Music" title, according on her longevity, acclaim from music critics and/or peers, and success. (also she's not only a vocalist for "djs", Goulding is a drummer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter) 96% of ellie biggest hits are as a solo artist plus she's highly respected by her peers on the EDM community, with many sampling/using her work/vocals, making her one of the most in demand female artist of the genre (at least of the last decade) as she inspired an amount of producers to create content especially during the times were SoundCloud/MySpace were a thing. And let's not forget that before 'Love Me Like You Do' and her full transition into popstar, she was a folktronica/ indietronica artist, and she also has experimented with different subgenres of edm like dubstep, synth-pop, garage, electropop, dance-pop, etc.

1.) features on a debut album are totally fine imo, as long as the collabs further establish the artist rather than just tag them along to a known name
2.) ugh this one just annoyed me, I hate the term EDM as a blanket way to describe electronic sounds so much. and Bebe? hmm... next question!
3.) putting an specific time limit on "legend" is weird to me. what did the artist actually accomplish? who did they inspire? were they prolific or did they just have a good promotion team?
4.) debut album usually being the worst album is just a personal preference imo, but in terms of "ability," most artists typically *grow* over time for sure. but plenty of debuts were amazing. The Fame, Animal, etc are my favs for Gaga and Kesha, for example, although both undeniably grew artistically over time.
5.) artists can reflect changing their sounds and styles, and honestly they don't owe fans of past music a fake love for music they don't like. but it's really annoying when they hate on past music for branding reasons and not actual personal reasons.
6.) love a lyric video!!! i got hearing issues so lots of words sound similar to me so reading lyrics right from the source rather than on (often incorrect) lyric sites is so helpful
7.) this is an interesting opinion. pop acts are undeniably super wasteful... but at the same time, I feel like focusing on Taylor's era-based shirts and not her private jet trips is the wrong lens, imo. But I personally enjoy having shirts from concerts etc because I don't go to them often.
8.) reality shows love casting people who will get people talking, and the largest audience is still white people. at the end of the day, tv producers are gonna pick people they think will make content.
9.) hate fireworks, the world would be better if we never had fireworks again except at major events that people could choose to go to.
10.) I know nothing about this so I can't really comment, but I for sure think we need better laws protecting kids in the industry even if their parents just pay for them to have a song. also Rebecca's making music now and she's very fun
11.) pop music is the intentional taking of sounds and styles and making them as palatable to as many people as possible. this is definitely a skill and a style that can produce a lot of great music if the music is inspired or made by actual fans of the music they're referencing. unfortunately, a lot of producers and execs making the calls right now are crazy out of touch and it shows

Re: Eras Merch Opinion. I think they were actually talking about Taylor Swifts Eras Merch. Not, like, merch for each era, but the merch she makes that includes every Era. It started with reputation. There's a line of merch from her where the merch has a "Taylor" from every album/era on it and, as the commenter said, the merch quickly becomes outdated when she releases a new album. And so every release sells out as fans want the updated merch that has all of the eras on it, and the "old" ones are outdated bc they're missing eras.
There's a sub-category of this merch she's done for the re-recordings where it's a bunch of different "Taylors" from that specific throwback era. But, that's more in line with "regular" merch.
But, yeah, the "Eras Merch" in particular that Taylor does is very quickly outdated, especially as Taylor has a typical album cycle of 2 years.
I've not personally seen other artists really do this style of merch, though.

For the debut albums one… I think of SZAs CTRL or The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill being debut albums that were almost TOO Perfect that are hard for the artist to try and follow up. So those are instances of the debut being way better than possibly any other album they put out
Obvs Lauryn never made an album after her debut, but part of me thinks it’s bcuz of the pressure of her debut being deemed perfect and having all of these accolades and with SZA it’s to be determined as she’s still actively making new music..

So I replied to the original comment about no features on debut albums and I'll speak here too!
I'm glad you brought up the distinction between the types of artists who would or would not use a feature - the singer/songwriter type versus others. I'm going to use two examples of "others" - Flight Facilities and Fergie.
On their debut album - Down to Earth - FF made many songs with other artists as features, because they are electronic music producers not singers. In my opinion that doesn't hurt the songs, the featured artists feel complimentary! Each song with a featured artist sounds unique from one another while fitting the debut album nicely. I admire the skill used to make those songs feel "balanced" with the rest. ❤
Fergie's debut - The Dutchess - featured others too but she seems at home in the company of Ludacris and will.i.am so the collaboration sounds complimentary. "Glamorous" and "Fergalicious" were definitely Fergie's persona even with those guys beside her. She still proved her popularity as a solo artist with "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "London Bridge" too. Though I don't much like Fergie, I feel passionate that collaboration can be magical and showing that magic can be worth it for a debut!

18:25 if this person is saying what i think they’re saying, it’s that it’s wasteful for taylor to be making a t shirt with all of her “eras” on it when she’s still coming out with new eras. Like that tee of her in the debut dress, the red circus outfit etc that came out for the eras tour - that shirt is now outdated, because there’s no taylor doodle of her in the ttpd era. I totally agree that the whole point of merch is to be specific to whatever is out *now*, but doing the “every era i’ve had” shirt when you’re still in the middle of making a new era - no doubt in two years, she’ll sell an all eras shrit that *does* include ttpd, and boom now that original eras shirt isn’t more valuable or vintage, just unfinished

It’s hard to think of a male artist who had a great debut body of work. I guess I can go with The Weeknd with House of Balloons. A lot of his fan base are all about his old music, while there are other people who would hear it for the first time in 2024 and would instantly have his mixtapes as their favorite bodies of work from him after carefully listening. In terms of Justin Bieber, all of his features don’t take away too much of his songs either but that’s just me.

I agree on no Halloween fireworks. Plus, it's probably regional on how much you can do with fireworks. I'm originally from NJ, and you can't just go buy fireworks. I live outside Atlanta now, and it's a culture shock for me to see commercials for fireworks sellers/stores. The kids in my apt complex kept doing fireworks like crazy at 2am all July
Also, I think people interchange being the greatest of all time and being a legend too much (especially in rap). I think being a legend and the GOAT are different. You can have many legends, but few GOATs. What's the point of calling them that if there's a whole bunch? I don't think anyone is going to agree in the hip hop genre who's the best because what each generation considers "good" vary and tends to be very regional/territorial. But also compared to other genres, rap is newer (For ex. r&b and rock have been genres for much longer). So maybe 50 yrs from now on, there will be a more consistent idea on who the GOAT is and:who the legends. I think it's interesting that we can pretty much all agree on who's the King and Queen of Pop (which had great sales an influence on the genre), but seems to be such an argued consensus on rap royalty. But like I said, maybe more time needs to pass. Rant over lol

i feel like a legend is someone who largely changed the game artistically, sonically, and/or commercially and thus is still relevant, discussed and credited many years later. that's why some legends have short discogs but are still considered legends. their impact was just that huge. Similar thing for icon but I would say on a kinda smaller scale. so i'd say mj or mariah are legends while katy perry or shakira are icons.
