    Andy KF0CSI here. I love the video. Thought I was listening to myself the whole time. Latest radio and latest firmware(3.01) for the 878UVii plus. Still no luck with the APRS. FT-2DR works just fine. Like you, every video I watch has something different and they all claim it works. Even sent my "codeplug" to another guy and he's still scratching his head. I've even thought of making a video titled "Smashing my new Anytone 878uvii plus radio." One video on programming a Baofeng and I had it figured out. Yours is the older model and mine is brand new and still the same crap problems. Junk junk junk!

      Yeah, thanks for the comment. I made this video several years ago. I should have made a caveat that as a DMR radio it is actually pretty good, but as an APRS radio, it is absolutely beyond trash. And they definitely advertise it as such.

    Just the video I needed. Going for the Yeasu for my daily carry radio. Thank you!

    Dude I know how you feel. I spent a week trying to do the code plug for mine before a friend of mine made one for my local repeater. I started with that now I have expanded it from there and it works well. As far as the APRS on it, it’s a basic transmit and receive. Yes the FT3 is superior for APRS and it’s much better “out of box” I agree with you there. I have the UV II plus and it’s much faster at GPS lock. I just had to give it some time because it was a radio I wasn’t used to. I have the FTM-400, FT3 and the 991A. Love them all.

      These are actually good as DMR radios, andn they have some compatibility with Motorola. But the APRS function is half baked.

    Same issues here... New to it all, but I have programmed 6 different radios and my 878 came with a plug that I just added to. Still can't get it to connect with sat.

    Just my two cents. Own both Anytone AT-D878 II Plus and a FT-5DE. And while GPS is trash on Anytone in terms of lock (although it did get better with later firmwares, previously it was extremely slow because of a bug, trying to lock on the chinese BDS system even when it was disabled in the settings).
    At any rate - got both to transmit and receive APRS and FT-5DE has a weird bug, where you need to be in a "auto FM/Digital" mode for A12 modem to receive, even though send works just fine in any setting.

    The newer version of this Anytone radio, the II Plus with the green button doesn't seem to have any APRS satellite problems. Have you watched the following Anytone APRS set up video... (New Anytone AT-D878UVII APRS Setup) ? The set up is accomplished with a Windows computer and not with the radio's keypad. Hope this helps.

    Spent 4 months and 2 elmers before I got a code plug to work. But why? My local DMR repeater only has about 20 talk groups so I can't get anything outside the Northwest. My FT-3 worked great right out of the box like yours and I can program it quickly in radio, no stupid code plug.

    Hey, I have a question, what radio bluetooths to your phone and or tablet? Or has a screen with maps and position? Looking for something like a garmin rhino..

      The ICOM 4100 and 5100 have those capabilities, but they use a D*Star version of APRS and the 4100 needs an optional board to use Bluetooth. I would like a 5100 one of these days, but I don't have experience with them yet.

    Are you going to test the new ANYTONE 878UVII PLUS??

    • @based_radio

      Not unless I see some reviews on how the APRS works. And if someone will buy this one from me.

      You have a point there.. it took at least 3 months to figure out my Anytone 878.. the biggest problem I see with the ANYTONES is that they take a long time to program MANUALLY on the fly. Why does it take so long to enter a frequency ( Digital or Analog) . This is a Big issue in emergency situations. THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY. I do like the Anytone for its ruggedness and Audio quality but the software/programming leaves a lot to be desired. YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO USE A COMPUTER TO PROGRAM YOUR RADIO.

      FYI, I was literally coming on youtube to see what's what... I'm doing the EXACT same test, by a window... my FT3D vs the 878UVII Plus... Yaesu locked on in around 45 seconds... that was half hour ago, still nothing on the Anytone...

    Had the same results between the FT3DR vs Anytone 878 series. Constant firmware updates didn't help, it was like buying a prototype. Anytone sucks.

    Conduct the same test with real antennas LOL those shorty antennas are good for hotspots, that’s about it

    • @based_radio
      @based_radio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tip. I did try multiple antennas, the 878 is just not an APRS radio. The modem must not be working. Yes these are compromise antennas, but my Yaesu radios will beacon APRS to igates all over town with them. See my other video on the matter. I have since sold all of my anytone DMR products.

    • @Bluecollarham
      @Bluecollarham 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gotcha! The 878 is buggy, hopefully the next firmware fixes a lot of the issues. If it helps any, the GPS needs to be set to GPS not GPS+BDS. My GPS locks on in less than a minute after powering up. APRS paths need to match what is in your area and when hooked up to my external antenna in my work truck, APRS tracks just as well as my FT3. The menu isn’t as sexy as Yaesus but this is what I have personally done to make it work better than as set out of the box.

      @N4EJM 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It doesn’t matter what antenna you use GPS doesn’t use the vertical. It has its own internal antenna.
