    The best advice I've ever had was: start. It's gonna SUCK. But you'll never not suck if you never start. Your first jobs will be awful. Then they'll get better and better and, eventually they'll be good or even great. So, start. Try. It'll fail. Be OK with that. Keep working, keep evolving. You'll get them next time.

    The best time to start selling your art is NOW. There is always someone that's looking for the kind of stuff you're doing, no matter the skill level, and there is always something you can offer, even if it's just the time that person doesn't have. I learned this when I started doing miniatures painting as a side gig - even when my skills weren't too hot and I was just painting by the numbers, there were some guys that were just fine with paying me for that level of service, because they only had enough free time to game once a week. Was a great thing for a university student working part time at a game store, made some extra change on top by painting someone else's stuff. And that in turn builds both confidence and portfolio of sorts, as you mentally begin to calculate how much time and effort goes in versus the price you've set.

    One thing Trent mentioned long ago and has been of similar thought among other artists with decades of experience is to narrow your field of view or goal post as he says in this video. For example I want to illustrate for novels or comics. I bought graphic novels in the genre that I want to become part of. Focused on what excites me, why it excites me then looked at developing my skills to learn how to make what excites me.
    That helped me to see where I was and needed to be (or at least what I could get away with 😜) to be paid. If a total scrub like me can do it, you can do it

    I needed this sort of insight many years ago. (If anything, I'm mostly upset with myself for having built up a bunch of personal weaknesses that I now have to scrub off. Absolutely admire the sheer attitude of your 16-year old self.) Thanks a ton Mr. Trent.

    I think it's quite simple, if someone is willing to pay for your art, then i guess you're ready. And after all, everyone has to start at some point, being "good enough" it's very subjective, you may be ready for one job, but not for other.

    "Jumping head first and figuring things out on their way" - I realized how this one applied a lot to most of my projects and situations. In my early career I always put much thought into my first and next steps and did a lot of research and prepared things for months and years just to build up a foundation for my plans. Preparation is good, but sometimes if you lack knowledge and experience regarding certain subjects you tend to spend way too much time on things just for a first attempt without knowing if this direction will be fruitful at all. I put much energy, money and time into specific business models, programs, websites with a certain mental road map in mind but then realized right at the first steps that some things didn't work out as I planned. The direction doesn't need to be entirely wrong, however once you go for a certain direction you will come to new conclusions. Like for example, you thought a certain software might suit your project, but you don't know that you may need some other fundamentals/materials to understand/use this tool not until you try it out at least. The sooner you learn about those details, the better. In some cases, I couldn't know it any better due to the lack of specific information I had at that time like certain dynamics within the industry or different communities or because I had the wrong perception of my clients' interests or even my own strengths. But you can only come to such a conclusion and get new valuable information when you finally make these first steps.

    In art classes, both in High School and College, had assignments where we picked a painting or artwork form a master and studied it. Even recreated all or a portion of it. I have studied art styles from different games and anime/manga in order to understand it. Especially since I am interested in creating a style in a similar genre.

    I think the most not talked about part of making art is the business side.
    Cost and time estimates, taxes, contracts...artists usually dont talk about how much they get for conceptart, splasharts, emojis, book covers etc.

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They do. But it's a bad idea. In the US you can get into a lot of trouble for giving tax advice outside of a paid consultation. Also, most of what you're talking about has to come from experience, or you'll end up charging too much and not getting work.

    • @CptApplestrudl

      @@TrentKaniuga Ah okay. Well then on a tangent topic, have you considered an episode about contracts or common clauses and pitfalls for conceptart etc? I've been putting off starting a real project for years now. Every time I start I get trapped in some kind of a anatomy study or rendering techniques loop. Of course it was useful but I still feel nowhere near to being ready. About a month ago I just said screw it, grabbed a random brush pen and went for it. I've pencilled inked and lettered almost 14 pages already. Once I finish the first chapter I'll post it as a webtoon and spam (not literally) all my social media accounts including the art related sites. The pieces will fall where they fall.

    "Just Beyond Our Own Dimension, Just Outside Your Conscious Mind, Lies A World Unlike Our Own."
    Writing has a Cadance to it. Poetry and Rap often use this Cadence to add structure and tone to a line or Song. People like patterns that break in interesting or expected ways; like a bass drop that leads to a huge uplift. Adding "of" Ruins the cadence of the lines and makes the wording sound jarring to say. Also you end that bubble in an uninteresting manner by saying something generic and lacking in color which is why I changed it to be "Unlike Our Own:" It tells the viewer something about that realm while keeping the same cadence as the end of the first line "Your Conscious Mind".

    • @thelaw3536
      @thelaw3536 ปีที่แล้ว
