    The video production part is outstanding. Excellent stop action with arrows and the comments placed very well so they are out of the way and don’t get overlapped by TH-cam clutter. As a whole they bring out your points more to allow greater focus and understanding.
    The technical analysis parts of her skiing is insightful to those of us that can’t quite evaluate what is going on. Fantastic stuff. You’re up there with LeMaster.

    Good analysis. Frederica exemplified exceptional poise balance and purpose with all her movements (except one) and managed to maintain a higher line all the way down

    Thanks so much for this, Reilly. I always enjoy your commentary, and this one is especially interesting. I watched this race quite closely, and I was blown away by how much faster Brignone was compared to Shiffrin. I really appreciate your explaining why. In the past, you've done comparisons between two skiers, often two who came very close in the standings. (Frankly, even with your analysis, sometimes the differences seem indiscernible to me.) It might be interesting to see this video of Federica compared to that of another excellent competitor who didn't use her technique (and who perhaps made various interesting mistakes) and who came in with a much slower time. I'd love to see you pull apart, say, Lara Gut's run or Frida Hansdotter's run. They're both superb skiers, but they trailed Brignone by a long ways in Killington. I'd love to get your take on why.

    Just rewatched this video and it occurred to me that an interesting comparison would be between Brignone and Lara Gut, as IMO they ski technically very different.

    Reilly I think the only thing that saves FB's turns with all that upper body rotation is that she is leading with her inside ski (ie her inside ski is ahead of the outside ski) as she is crossing the fall line and across the traverse. This helps prevent her hips from rotating which would surely cause her skis to skid side ways coming out of the turn. Also do you think that the up/down motion you show helps increase her speed on the flats? I think it might increase speed on rolling or bumpy terrain. Not sure it helps on the flats though? Thanks and keep up the GREAT analysis.

  • @Rakumario
    @Rakumario 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What you think is the medium speed in those turns?

  • @epicsdrummer2010

    Some good observations. But what you have not mentioned is that extending at the ankle and knee as she enteres the load phase of a turn where the external forces are maximal has a number very significant biomechanical implications one of the primary effects being that her pelvis moves forward so that the load transfer axis at the head of the femur is stacked over the load transfer axis at the base of her tibia. This enables Brignone to generate enormous force and edge control on her outside ski while developing high angles of inclination. Her CoM gets lower but extending her outside leg makes her taller in the load phase.

    Isn't she avoiding contact with the gate because it disrupts the feet and the body. She doesn't need to be direct to be fast so why hit a gate when it only interrupts the body and effort? I am sure you know more than me Reilly, but if skiing direct and cutting of round and fast, disrupts concentration or flattens the ski by smacking a stick then I'd think we ski round with no interruption. I'd also think the inward rotation is never ever as fast as counteracting but I have no data.

    Fascinating, extending to release on the flats combined with upper body rotation throughout the turn! Who was fastest on the flats, Brignone with extension and rotation or the other podium finishers using flexing combined with immediate tipping to new edges to release on the flats? How is she able to efficiently reverse the upper body rotation when transitioning into the next turn and gain early edging ?

    • @ReillyMcGlashan
      @ReillyMcGlashan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bill Armatage she was the fastest on the flats it seemed. It was very interesting. This is her unique way of skiing and has done so for a long time but is definitely not typically what is taught.

    So, those turns with rotated shoulders, she is very inclined at high edge angle. How is the outside ski not sliding out? In th-cam.com/play/PLK5ONATrMs9wcc3yaOrMCGdwZ6KwlT9S9.html, Hirscher is clearly angulating.

    • @ReillyMcGlashan
      @ReillyMcGlashan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      just has to do with how fast you are going and how fast you move in against centripetal force. You don't need angulation to get grip or weight on the outside ski. You have to be more precise with your movement into the turn if you don't angulate though.

    • @zoranstary7229

      @@ReillyMcGlashan I have to say that the bold is on OLD Slovenian ski racing school... If you take a look on videos of Bojan Krizaj, Rok Petrovic and first half of skiing carriere of Jure Kosir, you will notice this pattern of movement/technique. This is what I learned too, when I was participating the ski instructor schooling in very beginning in 1980. For sure it exists reading material on net. I can check it for you. More convenient and perfect short cut is to step in touch with Sandi Murovec living ski wikipedia who is author of the UPS ski school system - a new approach, which is rapidly moving away from traditional learning and which stresses new qualities, above all new way of thinking. Learning to ski no longer rigidly and strictly follows the curriculum, learning is skiing itself! UPS System is a very unique Concept and for this reason also very "hot" at this moment. Never the less Sandi Murovec was co author of successful era of Tina Maze (multiple Olympic gold medalist, multiple World champion and 2 times oweral World cup champion, holding absolute record of collected points in one season) - where he was a coach for fine tuning Tina's ski technique. Sandi is nice guy, very well networked in skiing business and always ready to help. He is also author of the ski movie "7ToHaeven" and the film "Edge", which you can find on TH-cam.
      If you come to Slovenia I will be happy to help you too...;)

      I am seeing more a Stenmark attitude than Bojan Krizaj who was a slalom skier anyway, more roundness and solid rhythm than brutal force. Not counteracting nd wider lines can be good to maintain a muscle effciency("scioltezza) and so also speed. Avoiding strong impact with the gates can also increase speed. Off course to ski that way you need the inside arm to work as 3rd balancing point(3rd leg). Reilly really love your vids, you are fair dinkum mate! Are you going to go to Cortina again?

    • @zoranstary7229
      @zoranstary7229 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@massimilianoortodossi8523 I agree with you. But don't forget, Bojan Krizaj was also excellent GS skier. He was 4th on Olympics in Lake Placid if I am not mistaking. And yes, Stenmark was the protagonist of this technique indeed. Regarding the 3rd arm I see this same way as you see it. This is very important axiom. In addition , excavating to expose shoulder means also having for hips lees movement room for edge setting. On very steep slopes, skiing wide cross the slope this becomes tricky (if no extremely high speed) and skier has to make exception in his standard/3rd arm technique. Federica is perfect in this fast conversions. Brilliant... After watching this video for 5th time In certain turns I am recognizing also some hip steering movements (Ted Ligety's speciality) . So far, perfect mixture.
      Actually I am more and more impressed about her technique. Thanks Railly for your bait... ;)
