Was living in Austin, tx back around 95 and got into this album. Really helped me out as i was trying to overcome a serious drug addiction. Remember listening daily on headphones taking bus to work at then hip coffeeshop Quackenbush across from U.T. Hard but good times.
Quacks on west campus in the 80s & 90s....I first heard this band on Valley Girl at the theatre then I got this album and listened to it non-stop for about 5 years
Man...Mickael Conroy's bass playing was so strong on this track. This is post-punk at its best. I love the bridge at 2.25. Just fantastic. To be taught in musical schools.
For those who were not there back in the day ... this version of Glad House is from the 2 song B side to the Extended Play version of the Melt With You Single. I still have it ... it came out in 12" Single with 3 songs.
@@1thess523 Another tidbit for people who were not around - the title song for the 12" Single 'Melt With You' was featured on a very early Nick Cage film - Valley Girl. That is where it picked up heavy play on College Radio in the U.S. Modern English are from my local home town in Essex, UK.
I'm 48 and I live in San Antonio Texas, I didn't start going to shows until 1990 so I'm not sure if they were still playing by then. My oldest brother showed them to me in the early 80's and I used to listen to this album when I started skateboarding in 1987
Likely M.E.s finest work. A true Alt./New Wave classic and great dance floor "exciter" tune and beat, with a deeply infectious rhythm (& yes, that wild, almost immeasurable roll on the Toms.) Perfection!
me n me wife saw them open for Bryan ferry at radio City music hall.wfmu dj bud styple took a request from me over the phone while I worked at 16w NJ turn pike,he played gladhouse.my toll booth rocked.
I was trying to figure it out on drums a little while ago but that little stutter is throwing me off, I really like the entire album it reminds me of being in the 7th grade back in around 87 ish
When I was listening just I suddenly got the feeling one of the drum mics was going through an echo box, so some of the hits he aren't even playing, they're echo repeats. I wonder....
The best song from Modern English. And once that absolutely horrid later song "I Melt With You" came out, you never heard their *good* early material ever again. It was the same way with Spandau Ballet. Absolutely loved this song, but absolutely hated "I Melt With You" right from the very first time I heard it. (probably the only good song with the word "Melt" in the title would be by Supercell/Hatsune Miku)
I actually like the entire album 👍, this album reminds me of New Orders' Brotherhood in the way that it's forgotten but probably their best full album.
Sadly, this is my first time hearing Modern English songs other than I Melt With You. I actually have a list of one hit wonders and am going through all of the "other" songs from each of those "one hit" albums. This one is excellent so far!
foolfan83 this is from the actual cd i have, this is the only version I've personally heard even from back in the 80's. When we used to skateboard we would listen to this album so this is one of those nostalgic albums that's burned in my memory but i don't remember hearing a different version. Was it a single that you heard?
foolfan83 the LP version seemed to be mastered with the bass a little more up front in the mix right?? It seemed darker? I was thinking this version sounded different too.
The best Modern English song ever released
Their greatest song IMO. From the 1st time I spun this lp in 1982 I've felt that 110%

Life in the glad house is never dull
A great tribal haunting atmospheric tune.
I never get tired of modern English. Music that moves you is the best. Nothing like it especially when it relates to an emotion. 🌟♑
Oh me, oh my ❣
My favorite also, a hidden jem for those who know. Excellently lawyered parts, melancholy genius.
I'm still listening.. who else is in the Gladhouse!
Love this,
my fav ME song
Mark Christopher Great tune!
4AD. Not Velet Underground or Joy Division, but early ALT. College radio comes of age. REM to follow. Gardening at Night.
Awesome music, that was before their time!
AWESOME
Love ME since I listened to Swan on Glass when I was in my early teen years.

Maybe 84ish?😅
Ah, I was already out of high school 3 or 4 years by the time this came out.

Dissonance at 2 mins and 8 secs then some e bow love
🎧🔥🔥🔥
This version is not from the album but still Cool!
Umm....it's exactly how I remember it from my album...perhaps the European version was different
Better
Graduated in '82 Mendocino
👊, I got a sister who graduated in 80' and then my brother in 83'. My brother is the person who introduced me to them and all the 80's New Wave
woo!

Can anyone explain what's the meaning of this song's lyrics?
Can you post the original album cut?

Original 80's alternative will always stand alone. Pioneering. Inspiring. Freaking toe snapping finger tapping..in that order.
