Little late here, but to anyone wondering, there was only one engine available for this year range Elantra, and that is the 2.0 DOHC inline 4cyl.
Guy in the video called it a SOHC.
Yes it only has one one external cam pulley, so maybe that's what confused him, but there are actually 2 cams connected internally by a chain.
Just stopped by this video series to brush up on the prodedure since my water pump is leaking after last timing belt and water pump service 50k ago(car now at 200k) and Im going to be redoing the timing and water pump asap.
*To add...Note to anyone shopping parts online thru ebay or Amazon, etc, and have a Elantra Hatchback variant of this same era. Sometimes the "Does it Fit" feature will tell you a part doesnt fit the hatchback, but says it fits the sedan. Just know, there is zero difference with the engine or engine layout between the two. So if it says it will fit the 4 door sedan, but tells you it wont fit the 5 door hatchback, IT WILL fit. They are exactly the same car until you reach the rear of the car. Taillights, etc.

Fantastic series, thank you! I took detailed notes on each step and it was fairly easy to keep track of all the parts that were removed. I recommend not doing this job until you have a checklist of all bolts and components, since there is quite a bit to remove. I watched this two-part series at least a dozen times until I had every step crystal-clear in my mind and could visualize the entire procedure.
The two parts that were most challenging:
    1) Removing the crankshaft pulley - without an air ratchet gun, I cannot see a reasonable way to do this (the Haynes manual suggests using a chain to hold the pulley... but good luck with that with a pulley factory-torqued to ~125 ft-lbs). my 250 ft-lb air gun did not do the job, so I had to go out and get an 800 ft-lb air gun. Even with that new air gun, I worked on that bolt for about 20 minutes.
    2) Removing the water pump gasket from the engine - there is very little clearance for any sort of razor, so it was a very slow process. I think removing the power steering pump from the bracket is necessary to make access to scraping a little easier. Honestly, I spent about 3 hours cleaning the old gasket. This is one job you do NOT want to take shortcuts on. If the engine housing is not nearly perfectly free of old gasket, you will likely develop a leak (maybe not immediately) and you will have to redo the entire job (which will take more well over 3 hours). I used some water-pump gasket RTV on both sides of the new gasket, just to seal any imperfections in the new water pump and any potential scrapes or grooves in the engine from cleaning the old gasket material. I torque the new water pump to spec BEFORE the RTV dries. The purpose of the RTV is not to create a gasket, but to fill any voids. So, squeeze out is a good sign. After that, you are likely good for another 80K-100K miles!

Well the video was easy to follow. Thanks. I got it all put back together and it ran and sounded good for a couple of minutes and drove it a few miles. Then it died. Will not idle. Cant start unless give it a little gas. If I let up on the gas it will die. Timing belt to tight? I don't know what I did wrong. It was very easy to follow the video.

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  7 ปีที่แล้ว

+Steezus H Thank you for checking us out. It is not believed that this is the timing, but it could be an indication that the current battery is beginning to fail and causing the check engine light to blink. It also could be an alternator starting to fail and causing the battery to not be up to the correct power level. 1aauto.com

Allow me one moment to expose my lack of engineering knowledge.
Wouldn't it always be extremely smarter to NOT run a water pump off of the timing belt? lol
It just seems as if that was either the dumbest or the greediest decision ever made by an auto manufacturer.
Nothing should be tapped off of any timing belt or chain.
All that does is increase repair difficulty and repair times. (potentially only opinion)
What happened to the days of loosening 6 bolts, replacing the pump without having to remove anything else, then torquing the 6 bolts? Why was that deemed "bad" by manufacturers?
I have a theory. It involves agreements between manufacturers and dealers to maximize profits no matter the cost to the consumer.
Thank you 1A Auto! This two part video made the replacement possible.
But sadly it did nothing to quell the rage at such a dumb design by auto makers.
And I may have inadvertently invented a potentially new swear word in the processes. lol
I did find a new black hole in the engine bay however. It loves sockets, and once they pass beyond the event horizon, all traces of their existence completely disappears.
What socket? I never had 3 14mm sockets even though there are empty spaces on the rack now.
At least I still have my 10mm!
So I win in a small way. lol And yes, I have since bought a new ratchet that can actually hold onto a socket.
