Moldvay was actually where I started in the early 80s. I still have them. The staples are rusted and the pages are yellow as heck but those two books have given me so much over the years! BTW, Daniel Norton does a great show....Even after fourty some odd years of gaming I've learned a few good bits and tricks from him.
Moldvay wrote my favorite adventure of all time, The Lost City. He also wrote Castle Amber and The Isle of Dread ( along with Zeb Cook) His pulp style of adventure design is absolutely fantastic, some of the best ever made!
Moldvay was a great influence for game rules and adventure design. I had some experience running B/X in 1981 and 1982, at least on occasional weekends. We used to visit a friend of my mother's a couple towns away from where we lived; and, his daughter had given him the B/X boxed sets as a present. Rather than transport my own books back and forth, I just used his books to run games for the friends I made over there. I definitely agree with your assessment that Basic level characters can easily be overwhelmed by deploying Expert level monster against them.
If I'm allowed to do this I'd like plug a bit for a personal friend of mine, David Jeffries. He's just started a channel he calls Midnight Green Gaming....He could use some support. 😁

There's a lot of wisdom in this vid.
