I spent the whole of yesterday trying to fathom mismatched tempos in a project - and found this at about midnight - thanks so much for this video. BRILLIANT!
Thanks DT. I loved that you repeated the example 4 times. For a slow learner like myself, it's great for drilling in the exercise. :) Great stuff and really clarified some obscurities I was feeling about Flex.
Appreciate this video w Smart Tempo. I've been stumped trying to make sense of it. But this helped add some clarity and clear some confusion that I previously had w this feature. Thanks again!
So it seems like flex is the tool to get the timing correct and smart tempo is used as a guideline working in conjunction to flex time. This is very good 👍.
They interact to a certain extent, but the simplest way to see it is: Smart Tempo moves the grid to fit the music... Flex moves the music to fit the grid
This is a great video, but you probably know that you can do Flex in the editor window as well, right? You just click on track view and click the flex button at the top of the EDITOR WINDOW. I did learn a lot about why I can't get my guitar parts to line up with the grid (I play to the click, but latency ALWAYS causes timing issues). I need to use "variable" analysis instead of "constant."
The problem is when you import an audio file with recorded variable tempo that has syncopation at some sections of the song. Another problem is that trying to visualize the transients with hard rock/metal tracks is WAY less easy than was is shown up here.
Hey DT. Exceptional content, as always! Could I ask a quick question re imported audio etc ... I'm getting a weird glitch with analysed audio which I wondered if you'd ever come across? My imported audio analyses fine but on playback I get a stutter, just on one random downbeat out of several bars, sending it either totally out of sync or just adding a doubled note, which deceivingly sometime stays in time and sounds ok. If I move that downbeat manually, just a tiny fraction, the tick clears and the audio plays as expected but that appears the only way to clear it. It's happened on various tracks I've imported, variable or constant. Weird shiz! Any ideas?
thank fcuk for this, been looking for this kind of description from 1000s of shite other vids.... are you available to help me with this on a separate kind of call, perhaps zoom?
I have what may be and interesting Smart Tempo problem for you. Just one persons playing banjo and singing Shady Grove. He’s frailing the banjo with a gentle touch. I wanted to get it to match the beat marks to make adding some bass. Mandolin and guitar easier. I can’t even get close. I think that it is not like the dance music you show with pronounced beats that causes the problems. You interested?
@@dancetech Wow! I have so much to learn. Hope you do a video about how you did it. I'm sure other folks would love to see it also. I'll probably be embarrassed I didn't figure this out.
After I had asked you about Shady Grove I went to GarageBand where I’d mixed that recording for putting on TH-cam. Turned off all the plugins but left the cutting to the right length in. Exported it to desktop as AAF. Then put it into Logic. Didn’t get back to it until tonight. This time it worked. I was even able to fixed the end where he slowed to finish. Then amazingly I was able to find the percussion that you used. I’m not a fan of drum sets but I liked what you used. Still like to know how you did the fix from the original. I must have restarted from scratch a dozen times.
hi mate. you can send the audio over if you want me to do a video trying to Smart Tempo it... other people have done that. email is admin -at- dancetech -dot- com
Hi, I am having a problem with audio drift in live mulitracking environments. I know the tempo of the live recorded songs but when I import them over time they fall off the grid. Is there any way to fix this with Smart Tempo? Hope I explained well and thank you!
well if the start is in time and it eventually drifts? possibly you are analysing in the smart tempo editor in fixed tempo mode rather than variable tempo mode? but there's other possible issues like the music changes further down the length of the audio. Hard to say without seeing it.
nope, but having the tempo reasonably close is best. So you listen to the track & count the tempo in your head, then listen to the metronome, adjust the metronone, listen again, get them reasonably close, then do the import and fixing shown in the video
You have the best logic tutorials! Quick question how can I start a sample from a specific place from a flex time marker? I'm an ableton live user that now uses logic and I can't figure out how to do this. This video may further explain what I mean. th-cam.com/video/4mXYQMWYq1Q/w-d-xo.html
what you are doing as far as i can tell is trimming a perfect loop and then you want it to match tempo of project? You don't use FLEX for that really. You apply FLEX after preparing/creating your loop and then it will stretch/compact to fit any tempo you like - th-cam.com/video/B9AubBBXWWA/w-d-xo.html - once the loop is created, drag & drop it into the apple loops panel to create an apple loop you can use in any project easily
Dude you're the man!! That marque tool tip was exactly what I needed. I always wanted to use Logic but Ableton's warping in my opinion was second to none. Now that I figured out how to manipulate and put any audio in time on the grid in Logic I'm off to the races. Thanks again.

Your explanation of the relationship between the grid and audio file in both modes was a lightbulb moment for me. Thank you!!!
I tell every Logic user I know to check this fellow out - his videos are probably the most informative on the net.
Two years later I am on it incredible thank you so much.

I don't know how you worked this out, but so glad you did - thank you so much :)
Thank you for creating helpful content. Very clear explanation!
never been this excited about a video

Thanks for another excellent hands-on explanation.
I can't praise you enough for this content, flex time is brill, I use it to change audio to midi sometimes.
Excellent video. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this
This is excellent, kudos for working it out and explaining it all.
Such a great help! Thank you! Excellent Video!
Veeeeeeery helpful, this is precisely what I was looking for. Also respect at 14:25 lol a true dj.
Excellent explanation!
Absolutely amazing, thanks!
That all makes good sense now. Thanks!
That was great....thank you! I was hired to play drums on a track a few weeks back that wasn’t recorded with a click. I wish I had this video then!

This is one of the best logic tutorials ever made. Thank you sir.
Can you do a tut on how you stream live with daw audio please?

were it not for the absurd coughing and "hang on a sec"s this would be absolutely premium content. video editing matters
probably would, but I had covid at the time it turns out (last march).
yeah, flex time always sounds kinda mechanical harsh to me. Thanks for the tutorial
Thank you so much this is very helpful!
Outstanding

At 15:54, when you say "boom" and shift the grid so the downbeat marker is actually on the down best...what are you doing to accomplish that move?
Very nice
Does this work with samples from Splice for example?
Great

you got FLEX switched ON that audio region? or just mapping logic's tempo to the audio ONLY?
@@dancetech Initially with Flex off but did turn it on to see if it made any difference .. it didn't :-)

If we don’t use Smart Tempo will the Flex & Follow Bar n Beats still work?
Has anyone tried this on a song that contains a push, or say is in 3/4 time? If so, do you have a workaround? Thanks - great video
