    I wish I could put my uncle's phone number here and let you tell him that killing these invasive animals is wrong. He's a farmer in northern Indiana who just spent $8,334 (I am looking at the receipt right now on his Facebook page) for seed to replant all the crops he's lost to feral hogs. That's just for the seed. Add all the fuel and other cost of running a tractor/planter and you're probably over $10k. And that is money he spent to plant once this season already. I go up every weekend with my rifle to cull out as many as possible, but these are intelligent, elusive animals imbued with a sense of self preservation that would rival any dog or intelligent animal short of dolphins or whales. Try shooting a running hog. Their natural gate makes them move in three dimensions. Up, down, forward and they change directions like their on rails. I maybe get 8 to 12 adults and double the juveniles and it doesn't seem to help. Fences don't even slow them down when they're determined to get food. It's a living nightmare for any crop producer. And all the deer, turkey and animals you want on your property are displaced. They want nothing to do with hogs.

    I own land up in North East Texas - it is a production lumber (small) operation. The feral hogs are rooting up newly planted trees and destroying potential lumber inventory. Your videos have helped me learn the eradication and control principles - please keep it up! really appreciate it. For the PETA folks, besides the hardwood lumber, the pulp from this pine is used for toilet paper, adult diapers (no kidding) and insulating materials - all very important right now... imagine doubling prices in the next year - demand due to world situation and falling supply because of these destructive pests. The rice farmers around me also are getting up to 10% of their crops up-rooted.

    Good and informative, when I can afford a thermal I will go to your website and buy from you, because you have proven your integrity in the past with equipment evaluations. Recently I did a hog hunt here in TX myself and used the 450 Bushmaster. I think the .452 pistol bullet might have a performance issue, on a large hog, due to a lower typical Sectional density than the .458 rifle bullet. The highest charted load for .452 ACP is 230gr. The highest available for a .452 pistol round is 300gr, so 45 Long Colt and 450 Bushmaster and not 45ACP. That's a .21 Sectional Density at 300gr, so dropping it in place means hitting a leg bone or the central nervous system, maybe. 168+gr .308 gets up to the .24+SD and seems to drop a hog in place often. You have gathered so much data I expect on what seems to stop a hog in it tracks, does your data match the claim a .24 sectional density bullet of 2200fps to 2800fps seems to mostly drop a hog in place if the hit is a heart/lung chest shot? (excluding broken leg bones and severed spinal cords or brain shot) I am curious because either I get a meat saving shot and risk having to track the animal, which means spending money on a thermal monocular or forget the ocular and just get a .308, spend the ocular money on a thermal scope later when I can afford that upgrade.
    (sectional density calculator)
    www.beartoothbullets.com/rescources/calculators/php/density.htm?bw=300&bd=.452
    (an explanation of SD that coupled with watching videos of hog eradication and forming an impression of what drops them in place, makes me go hmmm does it translate to hogs)

    Keep up the good fight my friend, this video speaks volumes about the real problems that farmers are having when you can walk into a field & the hogs don't run from your noise alone, then you shoot & they still don't run away completely, it states they are getting so overgrown that their not scared of humans any longer, & that's not a good thing. I would have thought that pistol ammo would work fine for hogs. I saw a "testing" video where 9mm was tested out to 400 yards. After 100 yards, they had to switch to a 9mm rifle, because the front site on the pistol was covering up the target. But even at 400 yards, it was still punching clean holes through 2.5 inches of wood. The slugs were about 115 grain, so they were still supersonic. I'm waiting for my 9mm rifle to arrive so I can try it on feral hogs. I'm really hopeful because of the cost of 9mm ammo against the cost of .308.

    • @LoneStarBoars
      @LoneStarBoars  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      9mm is terrible for hogs even out of a rifle. Head and really ear shots are necessary. I’ve tried it be prepared for disappointing results. I was using top of the line Winchester ranger +p

    Not sure about 200 plus yard statment on the .45 though. Lol, It still has enough kinetic energy to kill at that range. Even 700 yards it can kill. If it will go through a 2x4 at 700 yards. You can bet it can kill.

  • @markspc1

    Todd you are the best feral hog exterminator on the web.
    I am sure that you are aware of bullet sectional density: Penetration has lots to do with the ratio of an object's mass to its cross-sectional area, velocity is not part of the calculation.
    The sectional density of a 230 grain 45ACP is 0.162 and the sectional density of a 123 grain 0.256 bullet is 0.268. The 0.268 will penetrate better than the 0.162 sectional density bullet.
    Ask those guys who makes the LWRC SMG 45 to make one LWRC SMG 256 and you will be dropping more feral hogs than the competition !
    The 230 grain 45ACP ain't doing it !

    Good shooting, good video.
    Question about ammunition: You don't get good penetration with the HST, do you think it's that you're getting too much expansion early, or that there's just not enough oompf behind it?
    Also, curious if you have or will try out some non-expanding pisto ammol, like the Lehigh defense solid copper Extreme Penetrator/Extreme Defender? I've been wondering about those for a while. The claim is that they have (nearly) just as much penetration as regular FMJ, but a wound cavity closer to hollow points. Seems like hogs are good medium to test that out.

    Yeah would not expect HST’s to be a go to round on Feral Pigs. There meant for more expansion especially at SMG velocities which would DEFINITELY make that round expand greater than normal thus creating more Friction impeding further penetration. Id say Go Lehigh if they have a Sub .45 offering or go with Hornady Critical DUTY. Way more penetration than expansion for thick Pig.

    • @LoneStarBoars
      @LoneStarBoars  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @tomolsen3420
      @tomolsen3420 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LoneStarBoars Yes you did note this was not a good gun for hogs. I was just adding fuel to the fire. I have not had a chance to join a pig eradication outing but from the videos it looks like you get one good shot before the group scatters. The slow bullet requires greater lead on hogs running diagonally and more drop which makes it even harder to hit hogs running directly away. Even if the resulting impact was bone crushing at distance, the skill required to place the shot would be beyond that of most shooters. Just a bit of elaboration to your assessment. Thanks again for the video.

    Try Lehigh Defense "Xtreme Defense" 190g... penetrates like ball, wounds better than HP!
    Friend of mine uses an Olympic Arms .45 upper/conversion (K24 or K45?) with a can for hogs and coyotes. I loaded him a C-box of some LD XD's and so far he's reporting 1-2 shot drops where he averaged 2-4 with regular JHP (he IS a pretty good shot). Autopsy's of the carcasses showed perfect penetration and extensive damage (aka "ethical kill").
    Give those a try... Underwood doesn't do the subsonic XD but handloading them is easy.(I used 7.2g Power Pistol, 1.24COAL... clocked in an ave. of 1060fps in his Oly).

    What's the setup on your SMG, and how are you getting video through your sight, does that sight actually record video. Also, what's your first hand experience with the LWRC as far as accuracy and reliability, considering all the videos bashing it. I just got one, and am loving it, but my limited experience with it has been on a range, not trying to peg moving targets.

    Agreed , the 230g HST is a big expander and works awesome for concealed carry on smaller 45s like the Glock 30 and shield 45. But that's gonna cost you some major penetration at high velocity on pigs. I would be interested to see how the 200g Speer gold +p does, or possibly the 185g +p xtp bullet loaded by Underwood ammo at 1200 fps. Whatever you end up choosing please try some kind of lighter faster bullet at some point.

    2 questions: why not use fmj? i would think those would get better penetration than jhp. second question, did you use a fixed barrel spacer with the suppressor or did you have a booster spring? i have a couple pcc's that i shoot suppressed and have to use a fixed barrel spacer. was told at triggrcon that the lwrc needs a booster, but not sure why.

    • @LoneStarBoars

      Indeed. I'd like to see some good hot loaded hand loads too. When he said he's using the HST round I knew full well he'd be doing a lot of shooting. They expand nicely in human targets without too much over penetration but even small hogs are a different story. That one 50lb hog had 7 straight shots in him, probably 9 shots altogether and was still going. One thing is for certain....the resiliency of hogs when using self-defense ammo is great! Would like to see some Underwood +P+ rounds used. Funny though....$3,000 firearm getting .03 cent performance in this role.
