In the Netherlands, an enthusiast keeps his ageing Nissan Sunny in concours condition. In the UK, a motoring show destroys them for moronic 'fun'. No wonder we haven't got a show like this in the UK.
I'm loving this trip of Ian's - it's almost like we were there. His model knowledge as the cars arrived was impressive.

That glimpse of the Mitsubishi Sapporo brought back memories of the period in the 1980s when we were a 5 Mitsubishi family, though not a single one of our cars was badged as such. For a long time Mitsus were distributed in Canada by Chrysler who rebadged them using their own brands. So, my wife's dad had a Plymouth Sapporo 4-door (the 2-door was sold as a Dodge Challenger, a very unfortunate recycling of a storied pony-car name), my wife had an early base model Plymouth Colt hatchback, her brother had a 4-door Dodge Colt Turbo, his wife had a slightly later Plymouth Colt hatch, and I had a Dodge Colt Turbo hatchback.

    • @joelwebster8227
      @joelwebster8227 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@gromit3315 Dirk, this is true. But it requires determination to keep a car on the road here for more than 10 years - the system disincentivises the keeping of a vehicle for so long. So many of the really quirky fun cars (from the mid-eighties to the mid-nineties) are now very rare or non-existent on the road. Exceptions are often old European motors like Minis. Quatrelles or the very occasional Allegro in Harajuku. I'm usually laughing too hard to grab a photo of that one.

We did get the Toyota Corolla liftback from the late '70s and early '80s in the UK. A friend of mine had a 1.6DX as his first UK car. Unfortunately their propensity to rust was truly spectacular so most of them passed on a long time ago but they really were rather lovely to drive. We also did get the Corona 5-door hatchback in the UK but I don't think many were sold, they were a bit too modern for that class of buyer in the UK who tended to prefer the much more traditional Cressida saloon and estate. I only really know about them because someone who lived around the corner from me had a Corona hatchback and his wife had a Honda Quintet, so clearly they were hatchback advocates before hatchbacks became staple family car fair...

G'day from Oz, like your Aussie hat 'sport'! And yes the Honda Quintet you point out was sold here as the Rover Quintet. It was later replaced by another 'Rover' based on the Honda Integra 416i badged as a Rover Vitesse! ha ha. Both models still turn up 4 sale here occasionally. The Mitsubishi Sapporo was sold here as the Magna with slight restyling front and back - it was very successful here. That Toyota Corona 5-door at the end of the tape was sold here, quite popular in its day. Alas I see that no early Gen.1 or Gen. 2 Honda Legend, coupe or saloons turned up.

I don't know what it is about cars with popup headlights I just love the look of them, might get myself an old Japanese car one day

Get yourself a BMW E31. The ultimate in pop-up headlight / driving-light / fog-light systems. Garage it with an Elan S1.

Wow, what a show! Lovely to see so many beautiful survivors. I've never owned a Japanese car! Think I missed out there. Great report Mr HubNut.

I don't have a particular interest in Jap cars, but I love love love listening to you just list cars, slipping in a little titbit of information about what makes it special or interesting. Lot's of nice memories from my childhood though... Although you glossed over the 70s celica STs, they felt like the equivalent of a lamborghini or ferrari to me in those days.

Good show, many cars I remember from back in the day, I have 2 Japanese cars in the 2 car fleet :-)) the first is an Mk3 2006 Mazda mx5 in winning blue in stunning condition with low miles, the other I have just purchased is a mk2 Suzuki Swift 1.0l in Adriatic blue, a car in stunning condition for her 16yrs...and only 43,000 miles on the clock:-) I think we have a JAPFEST in Northern Ireland, I'll be sure to take The Mighty Swift along :-)

Brilliant show ! As you said Ian, it's lovely to see SO many unmodified classics in one place . I have fond memories of a JDM '86 Daihatsu Charade (LS?) ,same as UK but without rear seatbelts. My best ever Japanese car was an '02 Nissan Almera 1.8 Sport, very underrated imo. Have fun 😉👍

Lovely cars! I’ve owned 1st gen Civics - had 3 of those a Camry hatch, corolla 4wd wagon and a “Rover Quintet”, loved them all . The flip number clock on the Quintet was awesome! You drive them for a while and sell them, but you almost always want them back....

Wow, where do you look first? What a fantastic sight. Also, I wondered where that Nissan Cedric went to :-) We all guffawed with laughter at someone calling a car Cedric when they first came out but now they are fascinating and we wish we hadn't derided them so much. Another great journey. Cheers

That Cedric 1900 takes me back! In 1965, my Mom bought a new Datsun 410 (Bluebird) in "mint green", while my Grandmom showed up in a 1965 Cedric 1900! Must've been about the only one on the East Coast (Washington, D.C.) at the time. Comfortable car, but plagued by electrical gremlins, but I always like the grille and dual headlights of that model!

The second family car we had when I was a kid was a bright red 4 door Mazda Montrose with chrome grill. I absolutely loved the car as it looked, to my young eyes, so much cooler than the Renault 6 it replaced.

Thanks Hub nut. I would have loved to have gone to that show. That Toyota Corolla is a liftback. I had one an X reg 1.6 SR back when I was 19, didn’t have it for long as it was overcome by rust

Wow.... wonderful stuff. Unadulterated Japanese cars! When my brother started his family in 1981, his Datsun 160J SSS had to go, and he chose to replace it with a Mazda Montrose. Except I think the Montrose name lasted only a year, because his shiny new X-reg Mazda (PAV 19X) was then badged as a 626 and had had a slight facelift. I remember the cheery little two-tone bell that chimed when you opened a door and ahd left the lights on; and also fitting a rather powerful Clarion cassette player into it with him. Happy days :) Oh, and I saw a Nissan Prairie the other day!

Good to see the Toyota Camry Hatch - had one of these in Aus, 1983, 2.0 fuel injected four SV11 model. It just kept going and going, would not die - nearly 30 years old when I sold it
