    Its interesting that when talking about a ghost he is totally ok with just accepting what his dad tells him to be true, and even when he starts to talk about politics he acknowledges that a lot of his political thinking was influenced by his upbringing... but then he ends his talk with "lets think for ourselves on issues". I hope he spent some time later self reflecting on this things.

    He seems like a very nice young man, but I don't think he sees the irony of his statements. I don't think he sees that he is literally living the life that he is criticising others of doing.

    I absolutely _love_ the text explaining the different SE techniques being applied. Even as someone who has watched every interview on Anthony's channel I could find, I found them enlightening. It made me realize I overuse some techniques and underuse others. Thank you for continuing to exhibit great SE conversations for us amateurs and hobbyists!

    6:39 “Sometimes people don’t like hypotheticals”
    I’ve often found it tricky to persuade interlocutors why it’s important to answer a hypothetical. If the hypothetical is relevant and important I think it’s fair enough to answer it, especially if it helps find their *actual* position. Of course, it’s another matter to talk them into responding to one

    Interesting to see the refinement of Anthony's technique over time. A significant part of this discussion was overt reference to SE itself whereas, in earlier days he withheld most of this. I also see the value of inviting their questions of him - sort of a quid-pro-quo of candor. I'm asking you to be open and vulnerable - only fair I reciprocate. Opens those channels even more. Anthony has grown into a great exemplar for SE. Case in point- when was the last time you heard a calm discussion of Trump?

    When someone has a relatively uncommon name like "Gunner," blocking out their face isn't enough. They should probably be given the opportunity to use, or think about using, an alternative name. You can easily type the school where this was filmed (not mentioning it here because I know Anthony doesn't necessarily want it publicly revealed) + "Gunner" into Facebook and see who this is.

    I like how you started putting labels on the different parts to the conversation. Don't forget to acknowledge and label the timer. It is such an important tool in these types of talks. By you being willing to stop the talk if they wish you are saying that you respect them but also acknowledge that the person is interesting and worth talking to. You become more trustworthy to the person and they remain open in the sometimes uncomfortable or uncertain conversation. As always @AnthonyMagnabosco keep up the fantastic work.

    Whistling the Inspector Gadget theme song? I miss childhood sometimes. Did you know in the first episode he had a pencil moustache a lá Poirot? But the producers got a letter from Agatha Christie's estate saying they would be more than happy to sue them for copyright infringement, so they removed the moustache.

    13:40 _”I think there’s gonna be a Republican president until I die.”_
    What in the world? Anyone that knows slightly anything about politics knows that the US often swings back in forth between both parties in presidential politics. That’s been very common with the last dozen election cycles.
    Great job with the leprechaun hypothetical. He seemed to understand the flaw in his thinking. He may just need to think about it a little while longer and accept it in due time.

      From the response to Anthony's hypothetical, to his ending statements on his upbringing and politics, it very much seems like Gunner hasn't questioned what he has been told by the figures of authority in his life yet. This is a fairly standard experience for a lot of younger adults entering college, as it is usually the first time they are away from home for an extended period.
      Hopefully Gunner can reflect on this conversation and apply this questioning to other aspects of his life.

    • @loonifer888
      @loonifer888 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      About 11 months after this talk, Gunner's bad prediction failed. Wonder if he thinks Trump actually won or if he's willing to believe reality. Be a great second talk for Anthony to start with "so, about that republican for the rest of your life thing..."

    • @SailingSeignior
      @SailingSeignior 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@loonifer888 There’ve been many polls since the election that have found anywhere from 50-75% of Republicans (even most college educated ones) think Trump won the election. Betting odds suggest that Gunner probably thinks there was massive fraud that altered the results or whatnot but he may be in the minority that have accepted the results. I think he isn’t as hard-lined as a lot of people on the left or right that I have met. He seems willing to change his mind if you present him better arguments or ways of viewing the world. I think it would be a great conversation to have, as well. Must be shocking to be proven wrong the very next election after you made the statement. Lol

    It’s interesting because depending on the elevation, water pressure, layout of the pipes, you can get pressure slowly build up and an “off” faucet suddenly pours out a few cups of water and then it stops as the pressure is relieved. A little kid who already had is dad tell him that anything weird is his aunt’s ghost, will inevitably remember this as such. Experience is the best teacher, but experience can fool us in many ways.

    Anthony really gaslighted the Christian dude, persisting in pretending the ghost narrative was equal in credibility to the hypothetical leprechaun narrative, even after the dude made it perfectly clear that the unexplained (including by Anthony) phenomena were all things his "departed" aunt used to do when she had a functioning body. This interview really fell flat, and I'm more convinced than ever of ghosts. I also feel fairly confident that Anthony, though he would have said he isn't had the dude asked, secretly is (convinced of ghosts I mean). It's also hypocritical that Anthony calls the man who coined the term "street epistemology" a philosopher yet called himself the opposite of a philosopher. Anthony has ostensibly sold out critical thinking for influence over younger minds. This SE stuff is incredibly manipulative - borderline sickening - but I liked it at first, and I continue to love HONEST inquiry. The delayed publishing of this video is another example of how manipulative this content creator is, given that the dude says we'll always have a Republican president. This all looks insidious to me now

    • @termy3934
      @termy3934 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not convinced that it's a manipulative practice.
      Many of your claims are mundane. Such as epistemology vs philosophy.
      To put it in clearer terms, epistemology is a specific flavor of philosophy, regarding knowledge and beliefs and philosophy is in the more general sense and encompasses broader topics such as economics, health, medicine, nature, and such. It would be more accurate to specifically state its epistemology not philosophy in the general sense.
      And as for the delayed timing, the man's busy, give him the benefit of the doubt. He doesn't upload all of his talks and usually doesn't upload them immediately. Maybe be a little more charitable?
      As for your confidence in the existence of ghosts because you disagree with how this guy on the internet disagrees with you and you disagree with his disagreement?
      It seems to me the idea that he specifically challenged is that it's his aunt, see, the belief in the existence of ghosts is very common, whereas leprechauns are generally not thought of as real. Perhaps being a stand-in for any other thing. So like, instead of his aunt as a ghost, could it just be some other ghost that liked his aunt and does a few of the things that she did and is doing them as a tribute? If you don't mind me applying motive to a hypothetical situation.
      An important point to mention is that neither ghosts nor leprechauns have met the burden of proof for their existence as neither has been verified to be real. So, they are essentially equal as neither has met the burden of proof. The only difference is that more people believe in ghosts than leprechauns, which doesn't make either more true as the number of people that believe in a thing does not affect its truth. If that were the case then the earth would be more flat now because more people believe in the flat earth, but we know the earth is not.
      We can't observe a ghost. We can't feel a ghost. We can't measure a ghost. We can't interact with a ghost.
      Because we can not do these things ghosts can not be confirmed to be real, and curiously, many instances of "a ghost" can be explained by purely natural phenomenon such as water pressure being imbalanced between faucets and maybe one turns on, or a small gap in the bottom of a doorway makes the end of a hallway have more airflow than normal, or even mice under the floor making footstep sounds.
      Couple that with the fact that we can't even verify the existence of the soul™ and, I'm not very convinced that ghosts or the soul exists.
      I look forward to your rebuttal(:

      He said that it was things his Aunt did. Yet the things he witnessed were very mundane...like turning water off/on, and turning TV ON/OFF. My Aunt also does these things....in fact, all my Aunts do it...along with all my Uncles. He didn't really detail anything that was much different than any other ghost story....and so Leprechauns aren't necessarily a bad explanation for mundane actions done in a house. I do agree on perhaps the timing of the release of the video... honestly, I think he could have edited a lot more of politic stuff off of it.

      I'm just saying leprechauns could also be used to explain the phenomenon instead of an Aunt Ghost, because the "ghost" didn't do anything particulary unique that only the Aunt would do. So, I don't think Anthony was out of line with that hypothetical. If you lived in a culture that taught leprechauns will wander empty houses, then that culture will use leprechauns to explain open doors and sinks being left on. If you grow up in a culture that believes places will be haunted by ghosts, you will use that to explain it. That is the reason for that line of question.

    Gunner mentions that if he pulled up twitter, everyone would be talking about trump, how they love trump
    For one, twitter's algorithm will show you content based upon your activity, always with the goal of keeping you on the app longer. Seeing opposing views may well cause users to log off more frequently, so the algorithm will show you want you *want* to see - usually, the views that you agree with. For another, if people are unaware of that, they may not think to search for content specifically that they disagree with to challenge their views, or try to understand what opposing views there even are, much less why others draw different conclusions.
    Just my feelings here, but it drives me a little bonkers that people don't take time to look for those opposing views - not to totally inflame our cortisol levels, but just to have an honest understanding. It's important that we listen to each other, ask questions, so that we can challenge others, as well as our own views.
    edit: quick addition, very glad to see a new video:) always love seeing these civil conversations
