Yes I'm in Canada. Really? That's unfortunate. I thought it was the same across Canada and the us with regards to the sunroof, but I guess not. Thank you for sharing!
@@Drivers-Edge yes that's one reason, in addition to long wait time, that I opted for the non anniversary model. I wanted sunroof. I'm not sure if Canada has different trim lines for the R but in the US the only choices are exterior color and transmission. And of course after 2024 no more manual which is why I acted quickly because I wanted 6-speed manual
@@betteheadbettehead4800 it's funny because I want actually waiting for a 20th anniversary model, but they had one come in, and because I drove them crazy for two years, I guess they gave it to me to shut me up lol. But Yeh it's crazy that the only options we had were color and transmission, outside of the sunroof. I didn't realize that the trims were slightly different between Canada and the US.
I totally agree! I am thrilled I got mine when I did because a manual transmission was the whole purpose of me buying the car to begin with. It's too bad they are discontinuing it, there was a really high take rate!
I took delivery of my 2023 20th Anniversary edition in July, 2023. I have not had any of the electric issues (lights, radio), but I do not have a sunroof version (I'm in Texas). My tailgate does not seem to be as "heavy" as yours. I do not have the overactive sensor braking you described when backing into a parking space or garage (it'll beep, but no braking). Also, my dual zone climate temperatures stay synced when using the sliders under the radio. Apparently some programming changes were made (I see you have your infotainment software updated and it seems to have helped). Mine does have the annoying drive mode reset so I have to change it to "Custom" every time I start the car. Looking at other comments, my rear break rotors are rusting but I haven't addressed it. Mine has recently developed a slight shimmy, as if I've thrown a weight on a rim, or worse, something in the suspension is going (it's a little worse on braking). I only just rolled 8000 miles total. Still very happy overall (but could change if there's a major suspension problem).

The slight shimmy is strange. It could be a balancing issue. Hopefully it's not suspension related.

Turn the safety sensors off by turning off ESC, or switching ESC to sport. That's how mine behaves, but I live in Australia, so I hope yours is similar.

I had to replace my dome light module as it was not working at all intermittently, including the sunroof controls. The hard part was showing it to the mechanics as it worked sometimes. Once they saw it, I got a replacement and it's been working fine so far (at least 6 months)

I completely agree with all the issues you have with the car. I had a Mk 7.5 GTI SE and loved it BUT there were def aspects of it that I felt they cheaped out on including the stereo, the rear seat scratchy plastic etc. For VW to charge this much for the Golf R it should easily have an awesome stereo, no scratchy plastic. Power folding mirrors is such an easy thing for them to include. Also the auto up shift drove me nuts on the dsg. I really appreciated all the hard buttons and nobs in my 2019 and the capacitive buttons on my Mk 8 are really a turn off. I heard because there were so many complaints about them especially on the steering wheel they would be reverting them but I'm not sure if that's true. One good thing about the 2019 is you could turn off the safety features. I was backing up on the side of the road and a parked car was 30 or so feet behind me. The car slammed on the brakes and scared the crap out of me. I turned that off immediately. Great review!

I'm having to get the module controlling the sunroof, so, and overhead lighting replaced because it's been going wild, hopefully that will solve it. I have seen spy shots of the mk8.5 already, it seems The R and GTI are getting the physical steering wheel buttons and the center screen from the ID4 with the sliders illuminated. Hopefully that will solve that challenge with who ever buys the refresh. It's tough, you really can't get the perfect car unfortunately...

Wow, awesome ONLY 3 weeks ago that this POST was POSTED.... so it was a pre used NOT new for you? That 20 Badge, maybe it should have been, BLUE....ya.... right? I have a 2024 with BLUE badging.... but silver mirror caps, however it's a BLACK Golf R.... so the BLUE POPS.... I did want a Blue Golf R but they are very hard to find... especially in manual. I wanted to also ask, you're not usually in reverse and out of the vehicle.... where you had to run back into the car to push the cancel camera button... I mean... SCREEN ICON..... SO ARE YOU HAPPY OR NOT......
I was writing this and had not come to the END..... YOU LOVE IT OF COURSE.... I've had mine now, less than a WEEK.... oh and... watching your How to drive a manual.... comment later.

I waited for two years on a waiting list and was given the opportunity to get the 20th anniversary model, which I'm thrilled about. I really wanted the blue as well, so I was willing to wait until I could get my hands on it. I love the blue accents on the blue because they are subtle, but also look cool 😎! I think the black with blue accents look amazing too!! I always reverse into my garage, so that is why I have the sensors and collision braking always kicking in, but I don't know if that would be the case front parking. Overall, I love the car and don't regret it at all 😎

Did they sort the issue with the faults on infotainment system? I'm having those issues now. Have it booked in next week for VW to look into.
I just had a software update this week and it seems to have solved most of the slowness and bugs I was experiencing before, but now my sunroof decided not to close today, which is fun. That issue should be resolved next week. They are going to replace that whole unit with the slider
@@Drivers-Edge yeh that's what I'm hoping they do but why are they not recalling them as seems a common problem!
@@markp5056 they really should recall it, it's frustrating to have to wait for it not to work to fix it. I guess vw is trying to save cost here too
@@Drivers-Edge absolutely, they've already told me it's £160 for 'diagnostics' 1st hr if it's not warranty! I've only just bought it so it better be lol 🤷🏼♂️

I noticed you have a 2023 Golf R 20th anniversary edition. I have one also. I am wondering how you got a moonroof on yours. To my understanding and verified by dealers and reviewers, 20 year anniversary Golf Rs don't come with a moonroof.

It turns out that in certain markets offered the 20th anniversary model with a sunroof and some without. In Canada, where I live, they offered it with a sunroof, but I'm not sure they did in the US
@Drivers-Edge Thank you for your response. That makes sense. Loved your video. It was honest and informative. I wish our Golf R would remember my driving mode from the last time I drove it so I don't have to set it every time I start the car. We have a 2022 Audi S3 as well, and once I set my preferred driving mode, it stays on that mode until I change it. Unfortunately, our Golf R does not do that. It is a little bit annoying.
its a pleasure! I believe we need to say it as it is in life. No one, or nothing gets improved by being silent. Even though I'm a nobody in VWs mind, the feedback might somehow get to the right person. At the very least, it helps people make an informed decision, which is super important to me. That honestly is my biggest frustration. I love driving it in the Nurburgring mode all the time and it sucks to have to wait for the car to load and then click twice to get there, but I guess it forces me to let the car warm up for a couple minutes before I head out lol
I have a mk8R. I personaly think the hatch is balanced perfectly. Once you get it pastyhe fulcrum point you can just drop it and it will close softly. No need to slam it.

I really hate the hill assist feature. Im also surprised that most models didnt have the automatic power folding mirrors, i have the 2024 model so i always thought all golf Rs had them. Personally i'd rather not have it as it's one less thing to fix in the future. I feel like this would be one of the first things to have problems as it is constantly folding and unfolding every time u get in and out of the car, especially here in canada where it freezes and high temperature fluctuations. If it was made by toyota then maybe i would want it, but VW isnt known for making things that last.
The hill assist really is annoying, it's so hard to pull away smoothly on a hill. I truly don't understand what they didn't put a button to disable it. That was a really good call out, thank you! I hear you on the power folding mirrors in Canada. You are probably right, it might not be worth having them.
Agree; hill assist is much more assertive than my old MINI
@lronSausage I have owned a couple of VWs ND AUDIs with the folding side mirrors, and I have never had one of them go bad, so I don't think you need to worry about that. Drive and enjoy your car.

Yeh I completely agree, the hill assist us really annoying, but I found that if you bring the clutch to the bite point even with your foot so on the brake it tends to release a bit more smoothly, rather than taking my foot off the brake and then hitting the bite point with some gas.
It's funny I was really bummed out about not having the power folding mirrors, but I agree that they likely would fail here in Canada. I don't mind manually folding then when I need to, it's really not a big deal

Honestly. I think MOST of the issues are sooo slight that it seems like you have to REALLY look. Most of the issues would have increased the cost of the vehicle and made it less practical for some wanting the performance for the price.

I feel like a lot of people get hung up on the negatives we hear in reviews and then write off great options because of them. I really wanted people to take away from the video they there is no such thing as perfection with anything, but as long as you know the benefits and the drawbacks you can make an informed decision. A lot of progress said the infotainment and rich buttons are a deal breaker, but from my experience, it really hasn't been a big deal.
VW interiors fell apart after the MK4.5, eg Polo 6N which was BULLETPROOF, compared to the 9N3 and MK5s with headliners falling off, headlight switch paint would flake off, and the plastic trim would suffer 'plasticizer migration' - and become sticky to the touch over time. Even the carpet went to a cheap nylon loop-pile that frays prematurely. Every generation results in more cost cutting.

@@Drivers-Edge You're welcome. Indeed time will tell; perhaps they've learned from their mistakes. If you search for 'banned polo commercial' I think it sums up the old VWs pretty well.

my guy you are complaining about things that can be fixed within the car itself, i have an mk8 gti and i operate it pretty smoothly, u dont have to drop a call on the media display,there is a button on the steering, it answers calls and drops the call too,also there is two cup holders, dont lie

Yes, you are correct, a lot of three complaints are petty and can be resolved. I just wanted to make a balanced video with the challenges I faced in the first year of my ownership experience. It wasn't easy coming up with all these, but I feel like most people just getting into a mk8 from another brand will find these to be true for them as well

Yeh I have seen some videos on it, but it's complicated. It doesn't bother me that much to do it, but it would have been nice to have it from the factory 😎

@@Drivers-Edge I bought a 2024 DSG a couple weeks ago, and certainly agree with all your points. One I would add is the lack of hood struts. The prop rod feels very cheap and flimsy. At this price point, it's really confusing why VW chose not to include hood struts. Despite the annoying shortcomings, all is forgiven when I start driving. 😁 That Lapiz Blue is a gorgeous colour, almost wished I had waited to find one, but went with Mythos Black Metallic instead.
The side mount plate trend really needs to stop… it’s so ugly. No offense,your content is legit but just can’t stand the plate mounted spot

I really didn't want the dealer to drill holes in the bumper for the front plate, so I figured this was the next best thing. The truth is, they should really do away with front plate altogether
I bought a license plate mount for my 2019 R , went off to one side in the lower grill, it fitted my 2024 as well.
There are aftermarket struts that make the hatch pop up higher, almost fully.

@@FredD.A. I used a silicone plate holder and black zip ties. Soft against bumper and works like a charm😉
@@FredD.A. re: agree about replacement struts --.just be sure the force is.comparable or.else it'll be too hard to.close . But you can decide on different travel distance

Scratch and swirls? Learn how to wash it properly
Thank you so much for your comment and for watching the video, I really appreciate it! Unfortunately the swirls and scratches have all come from other people interacting with my golf r. I have been super careful washing it, but it's just such a delicate clear coat...
Stereo out of the box sucks. If you have any idea how to shape sound (yes I DJ on side so I have an advantage) you must go into the equalizer settings and re-do it all. Once you do that it rocks. The highs and lows again from factory are all set as flat and sounds horrible. If you want a pic of my settings let me know - happy to share what I bumped up and down.
