quick note, the song 'The Sound of Snow Falling' has ties to Emperor Hongli and Empress Fuca's relationship and ties to Fuheng and Yingluo's relationship and how they just generally ended in sadness for both of those relationships as they are all bound by the rules of the palace (even Yingluo to some extent as she does use them to her advantage) especially since she married the emperor she is also bound to the palace

0:59 'melting' quick, soon, fast, meaning that it won't last or will be gone soon, I interpreted it as the snow and that it melts fast

1:20 'instruction' to give instructions carefully and insistently / to urge / to warn / exhortation - urging someone to do something / for the emperor, this could mean that all he's known is the palace life and that his life of obeying rules and regulations is normal for him (and in a way because he has to do it, he becomes angry that the empress struggles to despite not acknowledging the difference in the roles they have to play) / for fuheng, he follows the regulations of society well and is known to be a model citizen and it could connect back to how he takes orders from the emperor / also, this reminds me of when empress fuca was talking about how when she had spoken more words than her husband and was punished for it, so she's pretending that she was just being given instructions on how to act accordingly and that it didn't hurt her and that it was right of her to be punished

1:42 the line 'born under a misfortunate star' is just an alternate translation to 'with a fate as thin as paper' as they are using the same words with different possible meanings. For example:
"This life has a fate as thin as paper" meaning that their fate (or destiny or hope for a happy life) is shallow and not good
/ "This life was born under an unlucky star" meaning just that at birth, they are destined to have an unlucky life / 'misfortunate star' usually refers to women being born under an unlucky star

2:10 I think what I really love about this line is that (since this song is both sung by qin lan, the empress, and lu hu, who represents the emperor in the song 'Look') she is saying that he has decided that she is inconstant in her love for him when in reality she just wants to escape the rules and regulations that both bind them (it's especially tragic since the Emperor feels the same way) this is also true for both fuheng and yingluo, while yingluo was willing to defy the emperor, fuheng was not and tried his best to free yingluo from punishment within the rules of society / this can also be taken as everyone's desire to live how they want

2:21 'terms of endearment' the qing qing here means three different things 'a high ranking official' or 'a term of endearment between spouses' or 'what an emperor calls his subjects' / I decided to use greeting because everyone is supposed to greet the emperor even the empress so the use of qing qing here not only ties them together as a married couple but also as ruler and subject which is what Empress Fuca struggled with the most as the empress since her deepest desire was to just be a normal woman and to have normal marriage despite being with the emperor / the use of qing qing here for fuheng and yingluo is that after fuheng marries, they can no longer be seen as anything other than how their station in life puts them as / when yingluo is a maid she no longer calls him young master affectionately / when yingluo marries the emperor, even though fuheng calls her yingluo, she always reminds him of her title / it's also so that they don't get in trouble for having an alleged affair
2:26 'unsentimental' pitiless, ruthless, heartless / the literal means that the snow hasn't been influenced by their feelings
/ given that the word 'falling' isn't mentioned, it could also be that the snow has stopped falling which was not what was wanted (especially because of the word unsentimental)

me recalling all the memories when i was in Beijing, driving along the forbidden city wall for the very first time. yellow roof tiles, huge walls all around and gloomy sky. A city that has so many bitter- great stories to tell about himself.
Two questions please: Do you know whether the Chinese lyrics were written in a similar style as Chinese poetry or mainly not so? Also, the meaning of the text of Chinese characters intentionally mean to have a deeper meaning or it is mainly up to the songwriter, sometimes a little random and the whole text is meaningless.
To be honest, I'm not that familiar with Chinese poetry and the styles it can be written in, but there are specific songs with Chinese opera is introduced (the songs Look and Sighs of Vermillion Walls are a good example. Also, this song is a part of a Qing dynasty drama series called Story of Yanxi Palace). Typically, Chinese is a language that allows someone to say a lot with a few words. For example, a sentence in Chinese could be three characters long but becomes a fragmented sentence that wouldn't make that much sense in English.
Hmmm, for example at 0:58 'tasting as much as I can' is only two characters in Chinese 尝尽 cháng jǐn. Cháng means to taste or experience and jǐn means to exhaust, use up, to the extreme, to best of ability or extent. All of those words and general meanings can be expressed with two characters in Chinese but it uses more in English.
I do think that there can be a deeper meaning in Chinese characters based on the history of those characters while that does have to do more with linguistics. In 2:21 仿佛 fǎng fú is a 'merciful person' but fǎng is 'seems like, is like, appears as, imitates, copies' and fú is the character for 'buddha'. In order to understand why being compared to buddha in the lyrics has a deeper meaning is due to the history of Buddhism in China. To be compared to buddha in this song is taken as to seem like an unfair judgment of the person singing since it compares them to the highest form of enlightenment someone could have in China during the time. And in the context of the drama, with the various relationship problems between the characters, the meaning is heightened to another degree. It's like saying 'You are calling me a saint when I'm not, I'm not perfect and I can't be' In my translation notes, I tried my best to explain the significance of this lyric but it does have spoilers in the drama in them.
I would say that all of the lyrics are up to the songwriter and that each line does add meaning to the song overall. For instance, at the beginning of the song, the singer is talking about an unidentified object in his hand and how it's falling and freezing. The next lyric talks about how he is hurting yet he still takes it into his mouth and tries to taste as much happiness he can. Later on in the song, the lyrics from the beginning make more sense with the knowledge that he wants to listen and taste the snow. The act of listening to the snow is likely about his desire to live freely just as the lyric 2:10 'I merely have a fondness for indulging in the beautiful scenery outside' explains. And at 1:59 'With closed eyes, I foolishly fantasize that [the snow] will never stop [falling]' and later at
2:25 'Opening my eyes, as far as I can see, everywhere is covered in unsentimental snow' explains that he can no longer fantasize and his wishes cannot influence the snow to keep falling. That's what it means in the literal sense while what's unsaid is that he cannot even influence his life the way he wants either. At the very end of the song 4:37 'Who will come to satisfy this life’s fondness for this brilliant scene' is him asking anyone (the person he loves, the people around him, and even himself) if there's any way he could actually continue listening to the snow and live the way he wants. It ends with his wishes tragically unfulfilled.
There's another cover of this song by one of the characters in the drama (The Sound of Snow Falling by Qin Lan) and it has the same lyrics. It reflects how these two people in love are unable to live freely due to their station in life and just how much they wish they could change it even though they can't.
Also, this song uses Simplified Chinese characters instead of the traditional ones. Traditional tends to be more complicated to write. Mainland China uses Simplified characters for this reason and they're the main writing system. Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau use Traditional and there can be a slight difference in meaning at times.
