I got my WR blue 2020 WRX premium w/performance package 3 days ago. I’m glad I got this instead of the STI. The 7k price difference alone makes this car worth it
I wish the Performance Package would have received the LED headlights. All it needs otherwise is a rear LSD and the current STI offers little advantage. Of course you could always do STI drivetrain swap :) I recently upgraded from a '16 WRX to a '19 STI w/ the Recaro package. I do miss how the FA responded to flex fuel. It was certainly faster than my STI and managed better gas mileage on E50 than I do on 91 in the STI.. But the STI certainly offers a more tactile, mechanical driving experience that the WRX can't match. Getting the STI for below invoice (over $4k under MSRP) certainly helped the decision. The WRX w/ Performance Package may have made my decision harder if it would have been available at the time. The Recaros and Brembos are a great combo for ~$2,800.
Test drove the 2020 performance package in the exact same color . Liked the car but the Dealer wanted 35k for it. Ended up getting the 2020 sti with short shifter package for 38k. For just a couple more grand the sti won me over

Really Subaru you cant give a real time miles to empty gauge? The gauge will read 200 miles to empty and then the next second go down to 150. The center console arm rest is a joke as well. You actually have to buy and aftermarket extender so you can actually rest your arm on it.
.. Agree, they put zero effort into the infotainment/speaker system and heavily boosted bass levels. The rest of the car is alright, but in all actuality is nothing to write home about. As a '19 base owner, I couldn't imagine paying more than $30k for this car. The added features don't warrant the price jumps. The performance package is the way to go, but is not worth the $35k msrp.

So, it’s a bit late. I’ve owned it for the past 2 years. It’s great. The seats are fantastic, the breaks are awesome, I’ve tried a 2022, they suck by comparison. It’s a great package, I’ve tracked the car 7 days since I’ve owned it. Only needed 1 set of oem break pads. If you can find a low mileage model I would highly recommend it.
@@kcspeed9980did you ever upgrade the brakes from stock? I heard they don't really need them from the performance package but I do like the look, it almost completes it for the WRX.
@@codezalo5773 yeah, so I have a performance pack with the brembos. Honestly you could just get a set of hawk or other performance pads and get similar performance. Also a rotor upgrade is necessary. However the brembo kit gives you more options for performance pads and the factory rotors are fantastic. I tracked my car for 2 years and besides changing pads 3 times I’ve never had a breaking issue, same rotors. The car has 40k miles. I knew while searching for a car I wanted something that could handle track days without costing an arm and a leg. It’s been a great daily/track car.

I have a 2019 WRX premium. I am getting the 2021 WRX Limited when it comes out, can anyone tell me if you can get the "performance package" with the limited? On subaru website for building the car, you can only select the premium for the performance package.. im wanting the Recaro and brembo on the limited though. Wondering if anyone knows, if I'd be able to do that when it comes out.
The performance package has only ever been available on the premium models (its dumb) the exception was the “Series white” last year which was basically a limited with a performance package. So your only real bet is going to be to pick up whatever limited edition they offer. If you have a 2019 I would honestly just wait for the next gen which will likely be out at some point next year. I think it will be a very significant improvement.
@@DJWolf yeah the whole on the premium thing is dumb, I think it should he on the limited if anything... Also i definitely plan on waiting until the new one comes out. I am not gonna wait for the sti because that is rumored to be a whole year away from the WRX lol... im really hoping if ANYTHING for the new version, that it has the brembo break for the limited at least. I don't care for the Recaro I just want the brembos...
@@jay_normilehey I was wondering what you ended up going with? If I can find a limited now a couple years later, it makes sense to just upgrade brakes n iunno bout the recaros unfortunately, but it does seem the WRXs are being taxed since the new Gen hasn't been received too well. That's here in California tho.
I have owned several STIs as well as several WRXs (this is actually my 3rd WRX of this generation). They both have their pros and cons. The FA20 in the WRX is way easier and cheaper to make power with. Generally speaking when you start modifying them, mod for mod, the WRX will be faster. The FA20 gets significantly better fuel economy. The STI has a better feeling transmission and also the DCCD (driver controlled center differential). The STI obviously has the iconic rumble but the engine architecture is esentially a 20 year old design at this point with minor upgrade since it was introduced. Just depends on what someone values, this generation is not like the older versions where the STI was simply better.
As my buddy’s STI awaits a new short block at less than 35k on a stock setup, I’m not sold on the EJ. My 2016 FA20 has been e85 tuned since it had 10k on it...now has 130k. It made 339whp. It gets driven heavily, year-round (obviously with the miles). I change plugs and oil regularly, and at 123k I changed the clutch. I may be biased, but I’m not sold on the EJ. The fact the FA is chain driven was a high selling point for me.
Existential I have to disagree, I too own a 2015 with full bolts and a full e85 tune making 387hp and over 350 torque and walk Sti’s with the same amount of work done. The unreliability that comes with the 2015-2017 sti isn’t worth the added upgrades in brakes and transmission to warrant the price tag it demands, however neither car does anything exceptional or has luxury components that puts it in the 32grand and up category
@@markwetty2269 The manual transmission could be a make or break deal though. Because manual is more rare yet most people don't wanna drive a manual anymore. So that value is up in the air. For reference i have an '18 wrx. But i leased it. I give it back next summer. Honestly it's not a good car. And a stinger gt is in my top 3 list of what to get next. Stinger 2.0t 4cyl is still probably a better car than the wrx. Too much tech and luxury, same performance.
@@theguy1224 sounds like I made the right choice. I bought a 35th anniversary GLI instead of the WRX and it's been working flawlessly so far. Over 300WHP with just a DP and a piggyback tune too.
Agreed. I kick myself in the ass everyday for leasing this fucking car. Worst car ever. I had a 5th gen camaro and that was better, even with the shitty visibility. The build quality on the camaro was better, brakes held up, faster, looks cooler. The subaru i got because i thought i wanted a fun stick car again. I was wrong. The gearing sucks, the throttle mapping IS THE WORST, the interior rattles and vibrates like it's a 1995 car, the engine makes weird noises. Like what the fuck happened to subaru? It's 2020 and these cars are built like it's the 90s. I can't wait to give this car back.
@@dlg5485 Subaru is definitely not about to go bankrupt. But they are becoming like Nissan's Infiniti lines. Alot of disappointment on their sport car range than excitement.

This was all in 2 years and engine was stock. Only rims and BC coils and AVO suspension mods. Subaru was the biggest piece of shit car ever owned. Got a flat , oh replace all 4 tires or bye differentials. Oh mpg was 15 city 25 hwy. Out of all cars Subaru was the worse. I went so many times to the dealer, I had become friends with mechanic and he rebuilt engine for free since he felt bad for me. 61000miles engine burned 5 quart in 3000 miles, , thank god I had the best warranty if not I would of been broke. I took car always in for early oil changes , always used subaru oil filters, it not they void your warranty. All maintenance done on time and car still had issues. Never again, no sti , no wrx, no brz, no subaru ever for me.
It’s a shame start up and rev The nuts off a Subaru with only 191 miles and then pulls out and runs it clear to red line in first gear guess the Subaru isn’t getting a proper break in I just hope when the Motor grenades in 10,000 miles he doesn’t blame the Subaru or if this is a dealership car he has out to review I would steer clear of it
This is our testing and development car for SubieBros. It's already been taken apart and tuned with only 500 miles on it, not worried about warranty here but in the 3 WRXs we have had we have never had a single item brake and that's through a lot of testing and abuse.
That’s some information that would’ve been nice to know I’m just sick and tired of seeing kids post on TH-cam about their sick WRXs revving the nuts off them and such blow off valves with no tunes and blowing the motors and blaming Subaru I’ve had my Wrx for seven years is a 2010 And have literally done everything motor out build motor and tranny out build tranny in full suspension and full bolt on with the exception of the E85 I’ve taken my time hence the long ownership to make sure I’ve done everything right so it strikes a nerve every time I see someone on TH-cam cutting corners and then gets mad when I post comments on their videos unlike you who seems to be knowledgeable now that I have a little more background
339whp here on my 2016 wrx on an e85 blend tune, just rolled 130k miles. It gets driven a lot. I change plugs and oil regularly, and I recently changed my clutch at 123k. Meanwhile, my buddy’s STI hasn’t hit 35k and was stock and he’s awaiting a new short block 🤷♂️. Anecdotal? They do look similar, with the premium you get the following upgrades over the base:
-17” wheels to 18” wheels
-Inverted struts
-Larger Apple CarPlay head unit
-Heated Seats/mirrors/windshield wipers
-fog lights
-moonroof
The performance package removes the moonroof and adds the Brembos and Recaros.
Great detail here man thanks👍
I really hope the new 2021 WRX and STi are worth it
Wow nice car
I bought the premium...doesn't have Brembo brakes, doesn't really need them either...
I changed my brake pads on my 2018 Outback Premium after 35,000 after couple trips through the mountains. Due cheap stock pads. I could tell the difference. No big deal and easy to change.
@@lowlifeangler True, not really talking about the pads it the whole Brembo package with the extra callipers front and rear which i was referred too...mine pulls up on a dime and comes to its own in the wet.
Is there any thigh support you know of that these seats give?
great review!!! I'm looking into buying a wrx and this is the best review I've seen on youtube thus far. THUMBS UUUUP!!!
Best review
Just got one today!!!!!!!!
How you like it ? thinking about buying one ? is it really 34k ?
Any problems with the car?
I’m really having a hard time deciding if I should get a wrx or a veloster n!
AZO Peyton which one them would you buy used if you had to? That should answer your question
Test drive 'em both! I've owned 2 wrxs in the past. Before I picked up my veloster N, I test drove a 2018 wrx, 2016 sti and a 2016 VW R. I drove a Fiesta ST before the N.
Surely, if tall seat behind the passenger seat instead of driver's
If you have to haul passengers....buy a Outback or Ascent
why brake is red? do I need to buy it?
Great review, DJ. Useful. Also 6'2"+ so it's nice to have a guy my height doing these reviews versus the shrimps(sorry shrimps) that are normally on YT.
Same engine, transmission, turbo, and everything else from 2015 and up why pay more?
The 2015-2017s had several TSBs and recalls that were fixed for 2018+. Check out SubiSpeed's TSB and recall section on their website where they list PDFs.
Android Auto and Apple Carplay with a new head unit is also a big deal.
I just put in for a quote on OTD price for the premium model, should I expect a discount on the MSRP? Thanks
jim carson absolutely. The pricing varies by location but 5-10% off MSRP should be pretty easy to get if you shop around.
@@DJWolf So they are taking about 3k off for a premium with the performance package. So 31.6 now.
Very handsome car 🚗
You might as well just buy a 2016-17 STI for that kinda money
Climate control is limited to just the cabin not temperature, it’s not a dual climate control
My 15 stock exhaust doesnt pop and crack , is this exhaust different?
I can’t decide if I want to get this or an Sti (as a daily driver) someone help
If you don't mind living at the gas station the STI. If you do mind. . . Neither
@@interceptingfist5682 do you know whats the fuel economy?
abady Go on my 19’ wrx base (cvt) daily driving mixed city/highway I’m averaging about 18.5-19 mpg, it’s the same mpg i’m getting on my 4runner.... so this sedan is hungry for gas.. oh don’t forget it’s required to fill up with premium gas...
Lol I get 18mpg in my 2019 STI this guy saying 18-19bin wrx is on crack... and I owned a 2018 wrx before the STI so yes I know.
chase klassen how’s your driving? Once the green light hits, do you step on the gas and race the grandpas and grandmas beside/behind you? Only to hit the next red stop light 1 block away?
Thats my car right there :P n i fuckin love the car
What kind of speakers ??
2nd LT cuz wrx speakers are shit im wondering if they tried improving them
Would it be worth it to get a CVt
@@codezalo5773 oh I ended up getting the limited WRX STI 😂
I want the intro song plz plz say bro plz
what's the name of this song? 0:40
Would this be worth trading a MK7 GTI.in for it?
At this point I would wait for the full refresh if you already have a GTI. It’s due as a 2021 or 2022 at the absolute latest
traded on my 18 mk7.5 gti for this exact car yesterday, go for it
I wish I could have this!!! 😏 I don’t want a 400 car note😑
I just picked one up , my car note is 478 😞not too bad tho my wife’s suv costs me 700 a month.
every person in a wrx wishes they bought a sti
Driving impressions …….
It was introduced in 2013, not 2015.
Im sorry if i offend any wrx owners in advance but getting 1 instead of an sti is the equivalent of getting a v6 challenger or hellcat
Stock for stock, the STI is better, as soon as you start modding the WRX is significantly cheaper to mod and faster up to about 400whp.
DJ Wolf still just a wrx....👎. Don’t live I. Denial of the fact you would get a STI over it if budget wasn’t a thing
@@carlotlife5013 Budget is always a thing.
I just bought a brand new Kia Stinger GT for $32k . That's a better value.
Stinger may not hold its value as well as the WRX, but that won't matter unless you sell it.
Over 300WHP with just a DP and a piggyback tune too.
damn same car 19 years... no wonder Subaru about to bankrupt
You're making shit up. Subaru is a subdivision of Fuji Heavy Industries, one of Japan's wealthiest companies.
@@dlg5485 Subaru is definitely not about to go bankrupt. But they are becoming like Nissan's Infiniti lines. Alot of disappointment on their sport car range than excitement.
Tell u a story , my legacy gt turbo 2.5 had 3 engine rebuilds, 2 turbos, 2 clutches that stunk, 6 oil return lines break, intercooler cracked, cat converter got clogged, wiper motor failed, stupid engine light wont let u put in S mode, the worst oem brakes, rotors replaced 5 times, lca bushing replaced 3 times , MAF replaced $300, some oil solenoid in back of engine got clogged, boost leak from cracked hose, radiator cracked.
Dang lol
@thesubieplug on instagram
Music is agony had to stop watching
Old and slow
Di ur reseach this motor is extremely unreliable jd power
The FA20 is very reliable up to about 350 whp/wtq. I did do my research, I design parts for them and work on them nearly every day ;)
339whp here on my 2016 wrx on an e85 blend tune, just rolled 130k miles. It gets driven a lot. I change plugs and oil regularly, and I recently changed my clutch at 123k.
Meanwhile, my buddy’s STI hasn’t hit 35k and was stock and he’s awaiting a new short block 🤷♂️. Anecdotal? Perhaps, but I certainly didn’t expect the FA to hold up this long and now my buddy is wishing he’d picked up an FA instead.
