- A new survey has revealed that 60% of parents with teenagers are afraid of letting them go out alone. This shocked our panel who admit they were out from dawn until dusk from the age of 5! We’ll be asking if it’s harder to be a young person nowadays and asking our panel if they were more worried about letting their own children leave the house alone.

I don’t think you have to worry so much about stranger danger…just other kids with knives now😞
1970's I walked to school, walked at night the mile or so to pick up my Mum from work. The papers back then were full of terrible events murders etc, the IRA was loose on the UK streets and being picked on as I was introvert and dyslexic but I went out played and took my lumps.
Kids need to have a childhood before they lose that sense of wonderment and life gets real
We did go out and only gravatated home for meal times.. from about age 10 in our case.
I wasn't allowed to walk to school on my own until I was 10 but my primary school was only 10 minutes down the road. Also knife crime can happen anywhere. In January 2024 my neighbour was stabbed in the head and neck by her partner while their three children aged 4, 8 and 10 were in the house. sadly she died a week later and her partner in in prison awaiting trial.
I don’t know, is the world really scarier now than it was before? It feels that most incidents are accidents, not someone knifing you but you getting run over by a car, or more often, you getting lost and losing your metro card, your phone is out of batteries. I probably wouldn’t send my five year old to walk to school alone, but by the time of age 12, my parents let me go do my own thing, and just told me the occasional scary story to keep me careful.
same here. I do recall, age 13.14 Mum and Dad who weren't drinkers deciding to go out with relatives for a few hours for a drink one night. BIG OCCASION as I was the eldest. i was quite scared because the dog was looking behind my left shoulder over the sofa, which was in the middle of the room and growling in a low way. scared me senseless. lol. Even at 14, I don;t think I was ready to be left alone for a few hour sin the evening.. other children are different.
For those of us growing up in the 1970’s, I biked to school by myself 3 miles at age 8. Parenting culture changes with every generation

My kids will, but they will not have a smart phone if they’re under 16. But PHONES ARE PROOF OF LIFE NOW.
As soon as my kid can leave the house indispensably, they will take a phone.
Todays world is dangerous especially as kids now are walking down the street with thier eyes glued to thier phones, you never know who behind them or stalking them
Honestly, today is no worse than it was back then it’s just more focused on with media coverage

Yeah, which is why we should force them to be outside more. Real world isn’t like twitter, it’s good for a 10 yr old to meet a friendly neighbor or interact with well meaning strangers, in my view.

Maybe giving the stats on crime growth per capita. Nowadays v before. I think people are more fearful today. Otherwise its a pointless conversation without stats per capita

I'm 29 & when I was young the age was 14 that they could be left home alone. 12 is way to young
population is probably double now of when these ladies were little
It not just kids you can't trust it has adult it's not safe any age Thier to much happening in the world getting worse
Bull. Kids don't need to be cuddled like there suggesting but they should be taught how to behave on their own and if they can't behave to standards fitting the responsibility to bring left on their on then they shouldn't be, you can't prevent every wrong thing but kids need to know that being left to do on their own is a responsibility and not a right, so they can go terrorizing their own streets like is being done to much these days as lots of people don't think putting the effort to put values and principles and morals on their kids are important anymore.
