    Thanks for sharing. I bought three reed avocado fruits three years ago in November. Like the taste so much I threw all three seeds outside in a clay pot and forgotten about them. Lo and behold all three sprouted nicely in the spring. Now I have three reeds growing separately. Look forward to see the first blooms in the future.

    Hey Greg, Thanks for sharing your "valuable" information. I've learned so much from your videos. I'm planning on planting a Reed as my next avocado tree. Good to know that the Reed can tolerate heat and the chloride better than my current Carmen Hass.

    I have been searching for a Reed Avocado tree for the last year and stumbled across some Reeds at Walmart of all places. I bought one and am excited to get it planted. I have a Gopher Guard wire basket I have been saving for this moment. Vista, California.

      Hi Richard, Great find. Best of luck with the Reed. Vista is a great place to grow an avocado; and the original Reed grew over in neighboring Carlsbad.

    Reed is a late bloomer which is highly desirable in cool temperate microclimates. When (not "if") Spring temperatures are cool early flowering cultivars may fail to set fruit - so Reed is the standout winner.

    • @gregalderdotcom
      @gregalderdotcom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a good point, John. I live in such a place. My nightly lows in spring are often too chilly for early-blooming varieties to set well and for B-type varieties to open flowers in the female phase. But Reed always sets much fruit for me because its bloom peaks so late, when temperatures have warmed.

    Hey Greg, I noticed reed sets fruit from flower really fast compared to my bacon for example. So much so the reed bloom was 6 weeks later than bacon and now is on par setting fruit with bacon. I see so many little green matchstick head size fruit developing on my reed. Im yet to have a reed fruit. My big question is, if a fruitlet develops, does it mean its been sufficiently pollinated ? Im thinking does the reed show tiny fruitlets regardless of pollination or not?? I would love to know. Thanks

    Great profile. My Reed is in my lawn and away from all other avocados and has set lots of fruit in it's second season. Last year I looked at your neighbor's windmill (the tall one) but can't see any water tanks. Is it a working windmill?

    Hi Greg, great vids. I have a small grafted Reed A which I planted about 1 year ago. I'm guessing 2 to 3 years old. I'm in the sub tropics, North East of Australia. about 8 mile from the coast. The tree is a little over 3 feet high now and looks to be growing well. I was not expecting flowers this yeah but it seems to be exploding in buds right now. I'm after some advice, I'm fairly sure the best thing to do is remove them but I'm not sure where to cut the buds? There are many vertical bud stalks with what looks like new leaf growth beginning in the middle. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Could I leave just one?? I'm eager for a taste. Thanks in advance mate.

    • @gregalderdotcom
      @gregalderdotcom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually let small avocado trees flower and set fruit rather than removing flowers because they almost always drop the fruitlets on their own. If your tree is healthy and three feet tall, you could certainly let it mature a single fruit as long as it is staked or has a strong trunk since Reed fruit get big. It will likely slow the growth of the tree a bit, but I totally understand wanting to try a fruit as soon as possible.

    I have a problem with this years crop, the crows have just about decimated all my fruit this year. they destroyed the fruit while they were flowers. :) normally I have a bounty crop. as I am in Australia I have fruit normally about now (summer) but not this year. I have about 1/2 dozen I see on my tree. like I said in another video. My tree is over the top of my house. 5 metres tall.

    When does the fruit of any avocado variety stop increasing in size?

    • @gregalderdotcom
      @gregalderdotcom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The day you pick it. Really. Even once the fruit is mature it still inches a tiny bit larger and larger. Like if you look at a Reed avocado in June it might look pretty big but it will get even slightly bigger if left until October.

      Hi Sansan, In Southern California, Reeds are prime for about three months but are acceptable for about four or five, depending on how mild the climate is. (The fruit hangs better for longer in locations close to the ocean.)
