  • We took on the 5 Passes Loop in Mt Aspiring National Park. The views on the tops were awesome, but the trip was definitely challenging, with boulder climbing, slippery tussock and lots and lots of river crossing. Route finding was challenging in places, and we often questioned if we were on the best path. A great trip overall!

    Nice video.
    Hope the shoulder is better.
You two look to be travelling light. Another video on what you took would be good.

Glad you enjoyed it. I'll definitely do another gear video soon. We have a pretty unique kit these days. His shoulder was (surprisingly) fine the next morning!

Sometimes taking the beaten path is a good thing. I can't say I've ever seen a comparable landscape. Stunning! Happy tramping!

Yes, trail is nice to follow, but then we wouldn't have seen those views! There is so much to explore in NZ if you are willing to head off track.

We do too! It's just getting above the bushline which is sometimes a bit of a struggle (need to work on our teleportation device)

You live in a beautiful place. I'm curious whether most of NZ is as sparsely populated as the areas you guys hike. I'm not sure I could handle the total absence of people! And I didn't even know that I liked people all that much.

Most of our travels have been in the South Island which is home to about a quarter of the population. There is a lot of farm land, and smaller cities (Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island, pop 400k ish). Tramping here is very different to the AT, there are no roads, no traffic noise except for the occasional helicopter, and no cellphone reception. We enjoy tramping alone, but it can be a little unnerving to be out there on solo trips for too long.

Beautiful country! How is your MYOG holding up? The tent looks really good!

Everything is holding up pretty well. We both really love out packs. The tent and sleeping bag are doing great (keep us dry and warm so no complaints)!
