    I agree about the durability issue of ceramics and can see why you'd choose plastic, but man... I hate plastic 😅. I guess I'll have to break a couple of ceramic drippers to switch.

      the difference is with heat retention. with ceramic drippers, much of the heat gets transferred into the ceramic, where with plastic, there's no transfer, it all stays with the coffee. especially helpful for techniques where you need to pick up, swirl, or "drop" the dripper.

    Isn't the whole point of this dripper the easy workflow? What's the advantage (in the cup) of doing the slow pour and stirring compared to Hario's simplistic technique?

    • @TALESCOFFEE
      @TALESCOFFEE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think the dripper was designed for an easier workflow. There are people (like me) who do prefer the single pour method for other drippers.
      The mugen still requires a slow pour in the beginning to have the first few drips as fully extracted but it ends up staling a lot easier so we end up doing the bypass.
      The balance between the sweetness and texture is maximized with this method I think!

    • @Yirgamalabar
      @Yirgamalabar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TALESCOFFEE It seems to me that Hario does try to make a point about simplicity and ease of use. This is from the instructions manual: "with V60 Dripper MUGEN,you can brew coffee with a single pour!Simply pour in hot water and let the inner grooves slowly brew your drip coffee."
      As for stalling, can you avoid it by grinding a little coarser?

    Hi there! I'm doing single pour with the Melitta (smaller version) and for my 8gr (1:15) brew it takes 1:45 avg to fully drain. The thing is I'm not stirring at the end but just letting it drain completely. The filter end up fully and uniformly covered by coffee grounds. From what you said in this video it sounds insane 1:50 for 160 ml, in my case is even worse hahaha but my cup tastes damn sweet and delicious. I'd say it's perfect for the coffee I'm using.
    Feel kinda curious about the Mugen but just not sure if it's worth the investment given i already use (and love) my V60 with your single pour technique and also ordered the switch (syphon lover here looking for simplicity)

    • @TALESCOFFEE
      @TALESCOFFEE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The mugen is just okay I think. The Kono is very similar to be honest. If you’re good with your pouring technique then you won’t need to stir as much!

    • @TALESCOFFEE
      @TALESCOFFEE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahhhh if you’ve watched I think my v60 video I talk about how the filter needs a fold that’s a little inwards on the top. That’s because the filters have never fit the drippers. The other way is to do what I do and hold the filter at the bottom and then complete the fold. If you have questions DM us on IG it’s easier to see there

    • @benito1283
      @benito1283 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is true, and I believe why so many people are getting suck quick drawdown times. If you really seat the paper correctly and there's no bubbles, drawdown time roughly doubles.

    I just got the Mugen a few hours ago and I'm having a hard time making the dome. The drain is too slow and the water volume is too small. Any tips on how I can make the dome?

    • @TALESCOFFEE
      @TALESCOFFEE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! The dome is to do with the stirring, so if you stir well at the end then you'll get the dome. If you're having issues with the drain pour just down the middle it'll help with the speed. What is your current recipe?

    • @marcorances956
      @marcorances956 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TALESCOFFEE What I did a while ago was use 15 grams medium-fine: 220ml 91⁰C water (160ml poured/ 60 bypass). I started by pouring slowly at the center (at the divot) moving outwards. Then, I stir at about 55-ish seconds. When I use the origami or the V60, it immediately drains. With this one, the drawdown is really slow so my brew didn't maintain the dome shape.
      Thanks for replying immediately! Means a lot 😁

    • @TALESCOFFEE
      @TALESCOFFEE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I try to keep up on my comments! Haha. Hmm yeah the mugen is like REALLY slow only reason I recommend the bypass TBH. You just have to stir super fast or maybe try cranking up the grind size just a touch so it flows just a bit faster!

    • @marcorances956
      @marcorances956 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi! Great video! Does the Hario Drip Assist work with this dripper? Thank you

    • @TALESCOFFEE
      @TALESCOFFEE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn’t really work. In general I don’t think the drip assist is very good. Kind of a pointless tool imo unless you don’t have a great kettle and need help with control because you don’t use a gooseneck kettle or you just have physical disabilities. I personally believe it’s not hard to get a good pour if you have a kettle that isn’t filled to the rim before you brew (too heavy makes it hard to control)

    • @paulmillerick4092
      @paulmillerick4092 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TALESCOFFEE Thanks for your reply. I realized later it's not for the Mugen. I was more thinking of the Drip assist when i travel - that's when i don't have a gooseneck kettle on hand. Thinking with a regular hotel kettle it would be helpful with a V60 for better control. Not critical at all tho

    • @TALESCOFFEE
      @TALESCOFFEE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey! Sorry for the late reply, just saw this! Hmm, I think actually for the mugen something darker and more gassy is best with this brewer tbh. It's because the dripper has a longer/restricted flow rate and lighter coffees tend to extract really quickly. So a medium-darker brew is gonna be where the mugen probably shines! Hope that helps!! The body will naturally come out because more time is spent in the dripper ^^

    • @benito1283
      @benito1283 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TALESCOFFEE Um doesn't light roast coffee extract more slowly than dark?

    • @TALESCOFFEE
      @TALESCOFFEE  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@benito1283 I don't think so no, dark coffees have more gases that prevent the water from extracting it. If it's total time after gases are released then probably yes? But because of the gases it tends to push the water out faster so there's more liquid that you need to have to pushand so the microfines sink first and the other particles need more water/force to extract it all. So dark coffees need more time because it needs a slower pour to extract everything!

    I keep getting a clear milk flavor whenever I pour as per their instructions.
    So it's tasting like a latte, bit I didn't add any milk...
    Never experienced this before. It doesn't taste anything like that with my Aeropress. And it has happened with 3 different coffees.
    Any explanation for this happening?

    • @TALESCOFFEE
      @TALESCOFFEE  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Sorry for the late reply, been away for a bit.
      The milky texture is generally cause we have a pretty high but even extraction where everything is more compact. Especially with the Mugen dripper that pushes all the water back into the grounds.
      This gives it a silkier and creamier feel to the coffee which is somewhat similar to a milky texture. A lot of times when we do tastings, sometimes our "taste" is actually more reminiscent of a feeling. With the creamier texture from the coffee you might get that "milky" flavour!

    The gentler taste is definitely because of your bypass. You've basically made the equivalent of a pour-over Americano. That extra water wasn't able to extract coffee deliciousness.
    First of all, you do you. If you're satisfied with your technique, don't change it. Here's some things that I think are worth trying out though (also for the sake of others that happen to see this).
    First, do a bloom to release that CO2. Don't stir your grounds so much after pouring your measured water in. Gently shake the dripper as the water goes down to maintain a flat bed of coffee at the end for even extraction. Aim for a 3 min brew. If your brew time isn't finishing in 3 min, sacrifice that extra water still in the V60 and try a coarser grind next time around.

    • @TALESCOFFEE
      @TALESCOFFEE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tito. You know this dripper was MADE FOR SINGLE POURS. This is the DESIGN OF IT, whether I bloom or not on this dripper .. purely from the DESIGN AND INTENT from Hario alone, this is what it was made for. A SINGLE POUR.
      This method you are suggesting I have done extensive testing on it. I even used it for three years in my cafe and none of them taste better then my current iteration of brewing. A single pour for me with MY understanding of it will be better. Try watching my extraction video :) you’ll see I bloom there and I explain my thoughts.
      Keep up the coffee journey. Never stop testing, never stop learning.
