In 2022 my wife started an art business with an Etsy store and also selling prints and products in local boutique stores. She did pretty well, but my job as a full time game artist is supporting us, and we have a similar dynamic that you described. I'm extremely happy to see her going for it and producing work that she loves. This has also given us a lot of flexibility in the afternoon when our son comes home from school. She is available so that we don't have to pay a fortune for after school care. At her old job she was often required to work late hours and weekends. Her art business may not be making a fortune (yet), but it saves us an enormous amount of money in other ways. Everyone's situation is different. No one should be judging your career choice if it makes you happy and everyone involved is on board.

We're glad for this authentic message, because people new to art, and people who aren't artists should see making art as something that normal humans do. People make art in every community, in your neighborhood, and those artists have families, obligations, other jobs- basically normal human stuff. The thing is, that other stuff can sometimes make us feel guilty about devoting time to things that sustain and heal us, like making art. It helps people to hear stories about taking a chance on your own talent, stealing a few minutes to make art, and devoting a little space in our lives to create. This just might give someone courage to make their own art!

Very well said, it takes a lot of courage to make art and display it for the world to see. Artists have to be creative in how they make time to make art, it's a labor of love and most artists don't chose this life, it choses them.

it's so cool of you that you made this super transparent video! Personally I don't think it's a bad thing, that your husband supports you. If that's okay for the both of you it's no one else's business and don't let them tell you otherwise. Also: Don't give up! Last year I made 50$ with my art so you're quite ahead of me haha! I'm sure one day you'll be super successful and sell tons of paintings! Much love! xx

Hey I just gotta say, "making it" is a myth! I quit my job 3 years ago to become a full-time artist. I am represented by 2 galleries, I have not chosen social media as a primary route, but the one thing that I have learnt over these last three years that I will always share freely with everyone is this, whether you starting out or you have been doing for a long time, keep educating yourself on the business of macro-economics, it really makes everything else makes sense. Nobody ever makes it, its true, everything is a temporary state - both the "successes" and the "failures" and to take it further neither of them even exist, they are simply just my perception or judgment of a situation. Ive had sold out shows and then Ive had no sell shows.....lols My job is just to keep going and stay out of my own way if that makes sense. After sometime, one develops thick skin and the natural comparisons that I had at the beginning or even placing myself on some imaginary scale of where I am in my art career was quickly slapped into reality when just after 3 months of non stop painting as a pure novice with no painting background I got picked up for a group show and everything just grew from there and then at some point everything just seemed to stop and nothing was happening for me, however once again, my job as the artist is just do the work, regardless of what my thoughts are or how I am feeling, I found doing the work is all that helps. Ive been broke for months, living in my studio eating 2 minute noodles barely being able to pay rent to suddenly having a solo at gallery in Paris and this is how life goes. And ask we enter March 2023 I pick up a brand new set of keys to my new studio and also a set of keys to my first Gallery. Its just crazy, this life is amazing, crazy, sad, painful, ugly, beautiful, however all is just to be embraced equally because that is the only way we know that we are alive, this is how we know what being an artist is. So my final words would just be that once I learnt to get become comfortable with the uncomfortable.....the acceptance of everything is sweet. Wishing you all the best on this amazing journey, you are exactly where you need to be right now.

I quit my job in October to try and make it as a photographer and artist. I come to youtube often, looking for tutorials etc. and somedays I almost panic looking at the titles of the videos I see - "How I make 7 zillion dollars a month doing stick-figure drawings!" or "These are the 50 billion mistakes you are making!" or "What the PROS are keeping secret from you!". Its all so overwhelming and I feel like I am not doing enough to 'make it'. I found your channel a little while back and was so happy to find someone who seems to be living the reality of what I am trying to do (I too have a very supportive partner who makes the $$). Watching this was wonderful, thank-you for your candor - its really appreciated. I now feel less like I am falling behind and not doing the 'right' things. I look forward to seeing more of your journey!

Thank you for being so transparent! I've been told over and over to never quit my job for art but i have almost no time to really pursue art and start a business with it because of that job. Then people say, then get another job that helps you make time... but I need money to pay bills and like you said rent and utility bills are expensive. It feels like I can only do art when I'm retired now because I need to make money to live and art aint doing it at all at the moment.

I feel this A LOT! I have been doing YT since 2014 (only really serious about it in 2018) and it's been a struggle to grow. My videos aren't getting many views, my post on IG aren't getting any views and so on. My Etsy shop is horrible at the moment, but I've heard from many people that it's slow everywhere. It doesn't seem to matter how hard I try I can't get a foot forward. I currently just want people to see me and to build an audience/community and it's so flippin hard to even do that. I would love for it be be a business one day but it's not happening any time soon. I'm not asking for things to be super easy ya know, just someone throw me a bone for once? lol #thestruggleisreal

I just wanted to take a moment to let you know how much I admire your work and the dedication you put into each of your projects. I understand that everyone's process is unique and that worthwhile things take time. I'm currently going through a similar moment myself, and I'm learning to appreciate the value of taking things one step at a time without getting bogged down by unnecessary fears.
As you continue on your artistic journey, remember that it's important to trust in yourself and in the path that you're on. If a problem can't be solved, there's no use in worrying about it, and if it can be solved, there's no need to let it consume you. Keep pushing forward, and know that your hard work and dedication will pay off in the end.

Hey! I'm in a very similar boat! I quit my job during COVID to take care of my little ones, and finally got the guts to pursue the art career I've always wanted. My husband makes enough money and has been encouraging me for years to do this, so I did. As of March 10th I'll be 6 months in, no shop yet. I'm creating a graphic novel so I'm going to have to figure out how to turn that into stickers/prints/pins/etc. As a huge introvert, it's been a challenge and a half to throw myself head first into social media, creating youtube videos, and growing. I'm still awful at it, but I know TH-cam is a marathon, not a race. Growth is much slower for me as I've been reluctant to film my face (rosacea). From the average I've seen, it takes a year or more for TH-cam to kick off for channels.
The worldy perception of artists being deadweights, starving artists, 'not a real job', is still a viewpoint that is clinging on by its teeth. The internet has made it possible for us to share our creations and get support, which is fantastic. But I get the same response when my old co-workers ask what I'm doing now. I get the forced smile and "Oh that's cool". Being such a small content creator and making no profits from my work so far makes me feel like a sham. I want to say I'm an artist with pride, but at the same time, I feel I have nothing to show for it.
And yes, there will always be negative comments. The irony is, all social media platforms count comments as engagement, no matter the intention. So while those jerks think they're being funny, all they do is help boost the account!

What Ive learned as an artist, it takes alot of work. But theres many ways to make money. Travel go to conventions, make portfolios for art careers, like graphic designer jobs, make a skill share class, an etsy, a redbubble and other accounts that could potentially make passive income, write and illustrate a book. I would also recommend getting a buisiness license and a bank account for that buisiness. Im still personally working on getting some of these set up for myself just a heads up but Im planning to do them once I get the time as Im both working and in college for ( Digital Media Design + Animation). Also something thats very important is learning to socialize with others, this can be daunting for most artists but if you want to make connections and get art jobs you got to socialize. Just how it is.

  • @karinsimoneartdesign
    @karinsimoneartdesign ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for being open and honest about your struggles, I am sure all artists go through that at least at some point in their career. When I see those self proclaimed success stories, I always wonder, why are you grinding on social media if you claim to have a six figure passive income stream? Well, to be fair, people might just like to be busy and inspire others, but I keep doubting their honesty. I hope you won't let the grind pull you down. If you focus on your art and loving what you make, there will be others loving it too, it might just take more time for your platforms to catch a surf of the algorithm.
Also, people who enjoy your content, are often not customers. I for example really enjoy your art and feel happy seeing it, but I don't feel I need to own a physical product. It's enough to see it online. Sure, I can consider supporting you by buying something but that still doesn't make me a regular costumer. So giving away content online in order to motivate your audience to buy from you might not always work that directly.
The exposure is amazing though, because actual customers might still find you once you are more visible.
A friend of mine got a really cool illustration job like that...
If you ever consider making a children's book with your art, that would be something I'd be interested to buy. So if that inspires you, it might be worth looking into. Not that book deals are a gold mine, but it could bring in some more substancial income and further exposure.
For the time being, there is no shame in having your husband bring in the main chunk of money while you invest in your art.
It seems like you are working a full time job and it is part of being self emloyed to have to grind before we can harvest. You can be very proud for taking that step and following your heart, putting in the work and going for it. People who say I told you so are probably unhappy with their job and just need proof that they have no other choice than to stick to it...
Thanks for being you and for bringing beauty and inspiration to this world. That is worth a lot and doesn't have to reflect in numbers... 🐝💐🌱
