It was inspired by Magic: The Gathering (the first CCG, in 1993), and Decipher's first CCG, Star Trek, which came out in 1994. Star Wars CCG came out late 1995, and was second in popularity only to Magic for a few years, until Pokemon overtook it. Decipher stuffed from internal troubles, and WOTC/Hasbro strong-armed Lucasfilm into not renewing Decipher's license for SWCCG - so it went out of print in late 2001. Yu-Gi-Oh didn't come out until 1999.
Love the Star Wars CCG! Still play it in 2023!
Fight for the Galaxy? Indeed!
Was this inspired by Yu-Gi-Oh, or just a happy coincidence?? Come on! Equipping weapons onto cards, *IN 1996?!?!?*
