There is a myriad of possible futures for our people after this mine. However, we lack the means to unlock those doors. If a larger emphasis was placed on education, rather than quitting school to work at this mine, then our kids would aspire to be more than just laborers and tradesmen. This saying comes to mind: "Give a man a fish, or teach him how to fish" You know what I mean?
Thank you very much for your comments. Agnico-Eagle is highly committed to education, sustainability, and the overall well-being of all the people in our opertaing regions. Just last week at the Nunavut Mining Symposium, Agnico-Eagle signed an Education Agreement with the Government of Nunavut. This includes a 1.2 million dollar investment over the next three years to develop the program which will include both grade and high school courses.
There are two very prevalent perspectives here, but we are only showed one of them. It's good that people are working. It's good that they are employed and making money for their families. But, in 3 years, when the mine shuts down, and everyone goes home, what will happen? I know AEM wont come flying in with it's super powers to come save our people. If they really want to do something powerful, they should train Inuit to become self sufficient; not to rely exclusively on exterior forces.
Let us hope, that the inuit people never get loose the connection to their roots and cultural heritage. 11:47 "now we have traffic" Capitalism already has destroyed many cultures. It cant be everything well, when there are so many try or commit suicide. Mining company and bank are talking ,they just want the best for tribe people, but they know,of they are not friendly to the inuits, the inuit wont give a shit for the mining.
Unfortunately cultures come and go and unless the Inuit people adapt to western culture they will continue to struggle. Fact of life, not fair, but that's the way the world works.
That is a pretty narrow-minded statement. It was not always so, and will not be so again. The way western culture poisons the earth... life cannot survive like that, nature will have the final word. These people may survive if they hold onto their roots. We with shallow roots will not.
Hi to everybody, I am looking to travel to Baker Lake. How can I get more information? Can someone help me?
Great job
My good friend David Ford and his wonderful family have made Baker what it is today!!
