My dad was in the Army and when we saw the movie he told me that it is part of standard training to cover the grenade to protect the rest of the unit. He wasn't just showing his courage, he was showing that he would follow orders, even at great personal cost. This sets up the ending of this movie and deepens the shock of The Winter Soldier when SHIELD and the government turn on him.
The grenade scene tells you everything you need to know about Captain America and why he's the best. It's over so quick and Marvel tries to break it with a joke like "is this a test?" but it gives me goosebumps every time!

Testament to how good this movie was it took less of a beating than the other ones you have done! Furthermore the problems in this movie I saw myself yet in the other movies you brought up a lot of things that I didn't notice!

So was the Tesseract just the Cosmic Cube from the comics, which, for some reason, they couldn't call the Cosmic Cube? Being curious, I looked it up and a tesseract is a 4-dimensional cube: Or, rather, it's what a 4-dimensional cube would like when projected into our normal three-dimensional space. We can't see the 4th dimension, of course.
