Today we check out the exercise that solved my biggest picking problem - this guitar lesson is focused on the often ignored mid-tempo motion and how to develop the right technique and angle for the challenging 2 note per string picking shapes! You can download the files for this lesson on www.patreon.com/bernth
BERNTH solid material, since I’ve discovered your channel this past November, I hear much improvement in my playing. Thank you for all these great lessons. I started week 6 of the Shred Master Class, I have finally found this course to be challenging at this level, but you’re right on with practicing daily, so much improvement with just this daily habit.. cheers 🍻 🤘
Thank you. an excellent exercise ... Beginning with the downstroke and ending with the upstroke would definitely free the pic.. the only difference in changing the angle of picking hand would be only if you begin with upstrokes .. that way the pick would be freed on the downstroke to begin on the upstrokes .. at least from my experience .. Your lessons are insightful .. thank you very much .. & appreciated. be safe
Paul Revere Ibanez made some guitars featuring the artist Geiger. Not sure how many were produced in the RG family or the S series but good luck finding one for sale.
Bernth, I just wanted to thank you for all the time and effort you pour into your channel. It's inspired me to pick up my dusty guitar (after 15 years) and try learning again. After two weeks, I'm playing chords, making smoother transitions, improving my picking, and I'm able to play through a couple of old rock songs without missing notes or timing. Thank you for that, sir. I greatly appreciate it.
You’re like the smartest most professional guy on TH-cam while also looking like you would sell me shrooms after the show. Don’t ever judge a book by its cover lol, this video helped a lot too
Going up strings while alternate picking is my weakness when it comes to playing fast songs. I can already tell my technique is getting better. I did this at 140 bpm for like 15 runs and It’s like I’m starting to see my inner beast lol. I appreciate this channel so much.
Reminds me of Petrucci's Rock Discipline and Frank Gambale's Chop Builder, although he played the arpeggios 3 or 4 notes per string Excellent lesson. This and Ben Eller's workout back to back shall yield maximum results. Winning 😁
This exact movement is the biggest challenge for me to learn fit for an autopsy songs recently, they do this a lot. Thanks for the exercise! This will help. You're the best Bernth!
Can't thank you enough Bernth, your channel deserves millions of subs! What a great exercise for picking but also just to warmup and familiarize better with the fretboard 👍
I now see what you mean by getting stuck between the strings from the angle. My mind was blown because it has been holding me back! Highly recommend subscribing to Bernth’s patreon. I consider myself a slightly advanced player and in just over a month of some of these exercises I’ve improved substantially! I will keep shredding religiously! 🤟🤟🤟
I just want to say a huge thanks to you. i'd been stuck on a lick for over a year, and i just could not play fast. After i watch this video and practice the lick you gave for about two weeks, surprisingly, i found i finally could play it!!
One of the best tips I've ever gotten was to practice whatever 3nps pattern lick that you're practicing, but switch up the downpick and uppick. Like if the lick starts with downpick and goes to the adjacent string on an uppick, also practice it starting with uppick and moving to the adjacent string with a downpick.
Weiter so! Hab schon viel gelernt von dir im letzten Monat. Danke!
Thank you. Just picked up a plectrum again after 20 years of a mixture of either not playing or 100% fingerstyle. This is getting me back where I was very quickly.
ahh Pick slanting! awesome. Im going to try this. i like that you pointed out left hand technique is important to do these runs. this may be a problem i have had for some time! that was a "DOH!" moment for me! I have never concentrated on "shred" in my playing as 99% of what I play is slow and heavy rhythm for death doom metal, but its always good to learn new stuff. Subscribed! I will attempt to do some of your lessons this week
My understanding is you could have two different main motions and pick angles. The way shown in this video is going in toward the guitar on the down pick and out on the up pick to clear the strings. In that case you also angle the pick downward so it is perpendicular to the pick’s motion. You could do the opposite with the pick angled upward and having it move away from the guitar on the down pick and inward on the up pick. But in that style you’d have to start with up picks so that you’re switching strings on the down pick instead.
OMG WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE!!!! You hit the most important thing that I just learned about 2 years ago and I have been playing for 35 years. Staying relaxed, and I didn’t know what a guitar setup was until about 15 years ago. I thought the more money you spent that the guitar would be easier. Wrong STAYING RELAXED IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH A POOR QUALITY GUITAR SETUP. So you might want to refer beginning players to a proper setup.also. MAN I LOVE YOUR FIRST TWO LESSONS SO FAR!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Hi Bernth, I see what you mean about the angle of the pick and the angle of my left hand. I remember one of your lesson not to long ago where you play 4 frets and hold each finger down as each finger moves down to the next string, but keeping your finger up so you don't let it touch the next string that's being played! That has help me to have better control on placing my fingers. I noticed what you mean too, about getting too tense when picking, I have a hard time relaxing when I play! And about the angle of my left hand, I've noticed that I have to change it when I'm in a different positions on the neck, to conform to what is needed, it's like each position demands that angle that is needed for that position! It's like don't force it just relax and conform, don't fight it! This exersice look awesome, I can't wait to get started, right after I eat my sandwich! Ha, Ha, Thank's again Bernth for another great lesson, and the time it takes to make each one! I did see the video when you were on tour with your band, last time, great show, it looks like a lot of fun! I would like to warren all of my friends that there is a killer on the movie on this planet. Covid-19!!!! So, Stay Clean, And Stay Safe! Todd P./USA
BERNTH I want to thank you for taking the time to make this video.Im so glad your video popped up in my recommend list! I have been playing guitar for 20 years and I have watched many videos on guitar techniques and some of them actually helped me improve on certain things but your video is the best I have seen when it comes to picking technique..there are many "picking technique" videos on TH-cam but your video is exceptional..you explain everything clearly without making it complicated, your pace is great and not rushed like other videos, your camera angles are perfect and I love the picture in picture window(that makes a world of difference when watching a guitar lesson). I truly feel that you enjoy teaching other musicians your techniques and not just about making a video to gain subs and likes. I don't subscribe to channels very often but you got a well deserved one from me..I look forward to future videos from your channel and plan on binge watching your older videos starting tomorrow..Its a horrible time during this Corona pandemic and I'm stuck at home like so many others .it's a perfect time to learn new things and advance my knowledge of guitar..cheers! 🤘😎🤘🎸
I'm from India today I watched one of your videos on Instagram and I really liked it. I searched your channel on TH-cam and watched and subscribed . I like your explanation and learnt lots of things in a day, wanna learn in details but for the the fee is very high but I will learn from your videos . Thank you .
Thank you for a solid lesson. This downward pick angle and also ending everything on an up stroke freeing the pick for the ascending string change really unlocks things. 😞
Thanks for asking Raghd! All good here, we're on lockdown here in Austria and all the shows and studio jobs have been cancelled or rescheduled - that's a bit sad but it's very important to get this under control! Hope you're safe and healthy too, all the best
Happened to stumble upon your channel, idk how but that doesn't matter. I may be a better guitarist yet. You've got yourself a new student. I appreciate the simplicity of your teaching. Just ran this one for an hour and will be definitely checking out some more of your videos. Cheers!
Thank you so much!!!! This lesson is absolutely brilliant !!!! I have a lot of problem with my hand synchronization and my picking hand! Your lessons really help me !
please add some more about picking exercise and technique..i have been struggling with my picking for year..thank you very much for this lesson..it will help me a lot..
That’s nice. I have used that method for warming up for quite some time. I think I will focus a bit more and utilize it as a practice regime. Great lesson.
great vide, great effort. just to add that down pickslant will work for all odd notes per string (2,4,6...) i thing yngwie uses this approach for 6 notes per string..
You're exactly correct when you say slower tempos are more difficult. It's because you have less momentum in a slower moving pick to power through the string, especially if you're using a stiff pick. There are things g can play at 200 that totally fall apart at 125.
Yea.... Qurantine has keep me bored, nice to c ur videos bcoz it helps me kill time 😉, upload more m really improving my skills after watching ur videos 👍👍
Great exercise! I`m already feeling it will also help a lot when playing some Mastodon riffs that sound similar and use a similar approach (like Megalodon, for example)

What kind of ibanez is that???
Paul Revere it has acid for blood, you can’t get any heavier than that.

Holy shit, this solved years of being caught on strings. You are hands down the best teacher on the Tube.

The right hand angle was the bad habit I didn’t even realize I had been doing all this time. That simple change has help so much! Great videos
Best alternate picking exercise I've seen lately! Very clear instructions and useful tips. Thanks!
