I kept this review "simple" - no specific format, no clips, no music, just my train of thought with slight edits... let me know how you feel about it. Just want to make more natural reviews... and also tired of getting copyright claimed on clips :(
If clips are truly an issue I'm totally fine with just hearing your thoughts on what's being reviewed (I usually have these playing in the background while doing something else anyway). Also, will you be doing a spoiler review of this?
Andre "Black Nerd" it’s funny that the iron giant is in this movie because when Iron giant First came out they referred to him as a type of ET title movie and it’s funny that all these years later Iron giant is in the movie
Good news, Andre. Ernest Cline IS planning a sequel titled Ready Player Two, as well as turning his Armada book into a trilogy. Hopefully, Ready Player Two focuses on Samantha Cook aka Art3mis, since Wade had his story.
Actually, Spielberg got the rights from Disney to use STAR WARS references. But, because STAR WARS is happening right now (TFW, TLJ), Spielberg didn't feel like he could add it without it overwhelming the particular scene it's in. So, he downplayed it by adding it as set dressing (supposedly, there are some ships right outside the Distracted Globe that should look familiar, the Falcon Reference, Parzival's belt with the Thundercats logo should look familiar, and some items in the last scene with Wade and Samantha).
In the book, Art3mis (the girl) is WAY less attractive in reality. She's still more attractive than she thinks she is, but her self-consciousness makes more sense. In the film, she was a full on babe in reality - even her facial birthmark was kind of sexy. Just one of MANY differences. You should read the book. You'd really like it - and about 100% of the puzzles and challenges are different, so it'll still be fresh.
.. and to add on top of what you said, the book was primarily (only??) 80s references - so the author DOES know those references. A lot of the characters you mentioned that you would've liked to see interact more weren't in the book
Yeah, I was hoping she wouldn't be conventionally attractive because that could've been a pretty cool thing to see. I mean, the main character isn't exactly attractive himself.
4:22 Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Wreck-It Ralph, Lego Batman, & Cartoon All-Stars feature pop culture characters. Ready Player One features PEOPLE PLAYING as pop culture characters.
Andre I HIGHLY recommend that you read the book. I loved the movie but I think you would love the book. The movie has some 80's references, the book almost DROWNS you in the 80's. Is the book very different from the movie? Yes. Doesn't matter. Still loved both of them.
Oh…. That joke just clicked in my brain a little bit! “Ready Player Solo”, “Solo” meaning “One”. 🤯🤯🤯 I just now got the joke! That was honestly really clever!
The horror doll (no spoilers) was my favorite!! Art3mis' Akira bike was gorgeous. Definitely agree that it fell just short of that full nerd nostalgia fangasm but still good 😄 And the book is much different, Andre. Much more character development. Different quests for the keys. Different references.
Gbird Chucky did what Chucky do best! Pop up unexpectedly and start stabbin people. Buuuuuut keep in mind Ready Player One in PG-13 so you'll have to use your imagination some. ;)
I love the natural, free-flowing vibe of this review format! It seems more conversational than jumping from point to point, and you explain yourself so well you don't need clips or music to highlight anything
I think you should... 1) Read the book (I just finished it and it helps explain the movie and is actually really good) 2) Make a spoiler review (There were a lot of scenes that you were trying to hint on but couldn’t for spoilers) Great review though and gals you enjoyed it!
I read the book the day it came out. I met Ernie and sat in his DeLorean. He was super nerdy and delightful. I’m super excited to see it. Thanks for the review.
I highly recommend you read the book. I think you'd love it. Fair warning: the movie does stray away from the book in many parts, but it still gets across the overall message and spirit of the book, which is why I loved the movie. There are way more 80's references in the book, but for the most part they're all necessary and the author does a good job paying homage to all the things he loved growing up.
Actually the romance was worse in the book, they actually did a better job of it in the film ... which kind of shows how bad the romance was in the book.
I was really hoping to see more of the Ludus Schools from the book. It got mentioned but seriously, if I were a History teacher I'd take the student to the D-Day Normandy Landing dressed like Tom Hanks. Come to think of it, Spielberg directed Saving Private Ryan and had a hand in Medal of Honor. And I know Spielberg mentioned he didn't want to put in his properties, but he got the T-Rex in because it would be mixed up with other movies. WW2 is a genre all its own. I was hoping to see that!
I loved the point you made about filmmakers who aren't gamers who don't get the mechanics of gaming. That alone makes a huge difference in the quality of the products.
Yeeaah, without spoiling anything, the reveal of the love interest in the movie and the book is pretty similar. So if that upset you in the movie, it'll probably upset you in the book. And I would like to see a complete geek out spoiler talk. I feel like that's kinda what the movie's made for.
I saw this movie in a Drive In. Yep, those still exist in various qualities. Our just happens to be the common crap one. My point: someone brought a Delorean that had blue LEDs, resembling the Back To The Future Part 2 Delorean in mid-time travel. My one regret was not checking it out during intermission because it didn’t stay for Game Night. To those confused: You pay to watch 2 movies on one screen. Ours has a setup where you see “three” movies. Movie A, Movie B, and Movie A again, if you stay past midnight.
I think I know what the 3 giant things are, really looking forward to that part. And do a spoiler review, Andre. I don't care how long the video is lol
I'm a huge fan of the book, and while the movie is pretty darn different, it did a good job at keeping the spirit of the book. Some of the weak points you brought up I think you'd be happier with how the novel handles them. That is, if you ever get a moment to sit down and read something, since you seem like you stay really busy all the time. XD Great review, and I'd definitely love to hear a spoilers breakdown from you!
Speaking of nostalgia, I don't know if you watch Supernatural, but could you also review the Scooby-Doo crossover episode: Scoobynatural? I swear, Dean's reaction to Scooby-Doo is like your reaction to the Smurfs.
great movie, I was smiling from start to finish, it had a solid pacing, the villain was weak, but the other characters were good, I almost clapped at the horror movie character part, and the three big characters fighting.
The millenium Falcon and a R2D2 toy can be seen in the movie. The Millenium Falcon ( well part of it can be seen in Aech garage, and the R2D2 toy is at the last part of the movie in Halliday's room).
My husband thinks it would be fun to watch the movie with a notebook and actually make a list of all the pop culture references in the film. I feel like you and he would be friends if you met IRL. Great review. Your enthusiasm for all things nerd culture didn't overwhelm your ability to give an honest and balanced review and you made me think about things about the movie I hadn't before. Well done! -- Jessica from Drawing Conclusions, the marriage of movies and art
I just wanted to say I love!!! How you always do little background stuff and move stuff around a little whenever you film these videos! It's the little things :)
"All these childhood characters interacting with each other" is what impressed me back in the day when I started to explore VRChat. By the way, the app was created by huge RPO fans, so I guess you can see that their goal was pretty much to make something similar to OASIS in real life.
I went and saw this movie yesterday. It was amazing honestly. The references had me pointing them out excitedly and I sang along to the songs in the movie. The movie was very cliche but honestly it was awesome. I would go into depth with this movie but it just made feel nostalgic and like a huge nerd for loving all the cool things I've seen it.
I highly recommend that you read the book, Andre! A lot more is explained and put out there, but I'm sure they had to cut some stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing it! Thank you for the spoiler-free review!
I had a really great time when my fiancé & I saw this in theatres yesterday. I had to frequently encourage her to separate the movie from the book (it's one of her very favourites and she was not a fan of points when they heavily deviated), but it still made for a super fun afternoon. I actually had flashbacks to times when my mom would say that to me and when I did have an online… communication in my youth (weird times, was really dumb, moving on). Passing that concept on now as a TH-camr feels kinda strange, but I guess that reaffirms that it's a concept that never dies. I will also take one extra long spoiler video with all the references please. 😊
What I like about this channel is that even though I watched the movie, when I watch your reviews I feel like I want to watch the movie again. HOW DO U DO THIS!!
When the one big thing was fighting another big thing and then the third big came in, yeah that moment made me literally geek out in my seat. That is what I wanted more. It was a fun movie and I would watch it again.
The movie was good but it doesn't follow the book outside of concept. So if you've read the book you might be highly disappointed if you're thinking its a direct adaptation of it.
6:26 -WARNING SPOILERS IN THIS MESSAGE YOU ARE READING- that's when the iron giant is fighting the mega godzilla, and then the mecha wing gundam comes in to help the iron giant, Really good seen, this is hands down my favorite movie of all time, I'm such a geek and I understood almost every single reference 😆
Definitely have to read the book. It adds so much more. Even the relationship between the characters...Also when you see the pop characters, they're the avatars that the players chose to be.
Actually a star wars ship dose make it into the movie twards the beginning the bottom left you can spot an x-wing I don't know how I spotted it I guess it was luck
You know, those 'Things' sound awesome! Totally sold me on going to see the film! XD But seriously, I have been wondering if this movie was worth going to see and for the nostalgia refs alone now make me want to see it so thank you once again, Andre, at least I know my nostalgia feels will love this film even if I don't like anything else about it and I am actually fine with that, been a while since we have had this trip down memory lane with Spielberg.
If there was ever a book you should be reading it’s this one. As a random person you do not know or will probably never meet take my word and read/listen to this book, it’s awesome! If you listen to it, Wil Wheaton does a fabulous narration!
Loved the review, pretty spot on. I will say I'd love to see a full review but also you should totally read the book Andre. Its pretty different in a lot of aspects. Would love to see what you think of the flip of it. (Yes yes I know. You're a busy man and 300ish pages is a LOT. But I think it would be an awesome contrast. Love the channel!
I loved the book and the movie even though the movie changed most of the elements of the book. I plan on seeing the movie again just to catch more pop culture references. Love your t-shirt. Where did you get it?
They could've probably gotten the Millennium Falcon if they'd wanted to, WB managed to have it in The Lego Movie... plus, Spielberg could've probably swung it if they'd really wanted.
Great review Andre! I need to see this movie again and look for certain easter eggs by genre. I caught most of the Star Trek, Star Wars, Firefly, and Aliens references. About the Street Fighter stuff, there was a scene to be fair where they did do some moves but I guess it was a chain attack and not a super combo since it didn't involve more than one character. But I give thumbs up for the "bad guys" avatar, not Irok but 'Bo55Man69 LOL
My impression of the villain Sorrento in the film, was that he was a corporate tycoon set on taking advantage of the Oasis users by imposing overzealous fees for service. The use of these reference serve to illustrate our infatuation with pop culture both from a passive perspective and and an active one. To an extent the concept of the Oasis does exist, such as vr chat where you take up the appearance of any character, and this film serves as a projection of where we are headed as a society.

How come you don’t have million sub?
Hey Andre one character from star wars shows up in the movie but I'll let you explain that in the spoilers review
Disney was like, "No you can't." LOL at that whole section!
Xavier Michael I saw an X-wing waiting in the traffic for that disco planet

luigixroxas she was not decent nor unattractive. No amazing but not unattractive either.
ProfessorPuppet Honestly, I thought the movie was better than the book
Yeah, I was hoping she wouldn't be conventionally attractive because that could've been a pretty cool thing to see. I mean, the main character isn't exactly attractive himself.
Full spoiler review please 🤓
When he was doing the Hadoken, my brother thought it was a kamehameha from Dragon Ball
Protoman The Great One I thought the same thing but then I realized how he shot a fire ball instead of an energy beam.
I did too lmao
Kamehamehadoken!
4:22 Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Wreck-It Ralph, Lego Batman, & Cartoon All-Stars feature pop culture characters. Ready Player One features PEOPLE PLAYING as pop culture characters.
I'm glad to hear that my useless pop culture knowledge will help with this movie!
Yay for geek knowledge!
GEEK KNOWLEDGE WOOOO!

Love the picture behind you! Thank you for the in depth review. You could do a review with spoilers, and people can watch it after they see the movie.
Juat came out the theater.... This movie was FRIGGIN AWESOME!!!!!!
I love the natural, free-flowing vibe of this review format! It seems more conversational than jumping from point to point, and you explain yourself so well you don't need clips or music to highlight anything
For this movie, its at the perfect level of nostalgic
I think you should...
1) Read the book (I just finished it and it helps explain the movie and is actually really good)
2) Make a spoiler review (There were a lot of scenes that you were trying to hint on but couldn’t for spoilers)

Maximo Smith
That alone sold me on the movie
I want the long spoiler version!
So basically, this entire movie is a love letter to the 80's. I'm cool with that.
It's a love letter to geek culture, pop culture, nostalgia and your childhood in general. Definitely cool with that.
Spoiler Review, please!!
i think what really surprised me was the ship from cowboy bebop and a bit of the pulse rifle
Who else was surprised that Minecraft still lives in the Oasis.
I was when I first watched it. That was amazing.
LET IT ALL OUT 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🖐
I loved the point you made about filmmakers who aren't gamers who don't get the mechanics of gaming. That alone makes a huge difference in the quality of the products.
Ready player one : the NERDY movie.

Are you talking about my video or the movie? LOL!

Haven't watched it yet but plan to. The animation actually looks really good on it from the promos I saw.
great movie, I was smiling from start to finish, it had a solid pacing, the villain was weak, but the other characters were good, I almost clapped at the horror movie character part, and the three big characters fighting.
Yes! Please do a spoiler review as well!! 👍🏾
The millenium Falcon and a R2D2 toy can be seen in the movie. The Millenium Falcon ( well part of it can be seen in Aech garage, and the R2D2 toy is at the last part of the movie in Halliday's room).
This movie is lit I watched it today
I began scrolling down to see how many comments you hearted, I couldn't reach the end. You're so full of love Andre
You got me hyped for this film😂
The 3 giant things fighting almost made me cry, because I really loved those things and never thought I was going to see them together.
I JUST FINISHED WATCHING THIS MOVIE OMG
The first thing I noticed in this vid aside from Andre is the Gundam RX-78-2 in the back next to Iron Giant.
I had a blast with Ready Player One ! Great review Andre !
My husband thinks it would be fun to watch the movie with a notebook and actually make a list of all the pop culture references in the film. I feel like you and he would be friends if you met IRL. *This movie looks really fun and awesome, also nostalgia is a good thing and im going to have a lot fun with the all the Easter Eggs.*
I just wanted to say I love!!! How you always do little background stuff and move stuff around a little whenever you film these videos! It's the little things :)
1:39 Peter Parker and Bruce Banner are mentioned
True, mentioned... but not seen ha ha ha!
"All these childhood characters interacting with each other" is what impressed me back in the day when I started to explore VRChat. By the way, the app was created by huge RPO fans, so I guess you can see that their goal was pretty much to make something similar to OASIS in real life.
I would love a spoiler review
I'm only 2 hours into the audio book, so I don't knitter of its in there or not, but that movie scene...MIND. BLOWN.
Bring on the spoiler review Andre!!!
Halliday was the heart and soul of the movie.
I thought the book was complete dog shit but I really liked the movie
I went and saw this movie yesterday. It was amazing honestly. The references had me pointing them out excitedly and I sang along to the songs in the movie. The movie was very cliche but honestly it was awesome. I would go into depth with this movie but it just made feel nostalgic and like a huge nerd for loving all the cool things I've seen it.
One thing got me more hyped than anything else...
MechaGodzilla
UnbrokenFirecracker 87 for me, Grandpa Gundam was the best.
I highly recommend that you read the book, Andre! A lot more is explained and put out there, but I'm sure they had to cut some stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing it! Thank you for the spoiler-free review!
Yes!!!! Spoiler Review!!!
I had a really great time when my fiancé & I saw this in theatres yesterday. I had to frequently encourage her to separate the movie from the book (it's one of her very favourites and she was not a fan of points when they heavily deviated), but it still made for a super fun afternoon. The "be careful who you meet on the internet" lesson was definitely prominent!
Their actually was Star Wars with the AT-ST in the final battle
Technically, but not official ha ha!
Andre "Black Nerd" and on their way to the orb their was an X-wing but they did take out Parcival’s lightsabers from the books also great video
They got The Glaive............yeah that is from Krull......i loved that
This movie is so good I love it
What I like about this channel is that even though I watched the movie, when I watch your reviews I feel like I want to watch the movie again. HOW DO U DO THIS!!
Great video and you should do a spoiler review
When the one big thing was fighting another big thing and then the third big came in, yeah that moment made me literally geek out in my seat. That is what I wanted more. It was a fun movie and I would watch it again.
The movie was amazing!
degenerate It's not. It's pretty messed up and not amazing.
The movie was good but it doesn't follow the book outside of concept. So if you've read the book you might be highly disappointed if you're thinking its a direct adaptation of it.
Please do a full spoiler rebeiw I need to see if Optimus Evangalion and Gundam fight together
I would prefer Spoiler reviews to non, your insight is welcome
Hearts all comments but this one.
NOW WHAT?

That and a famous smuggling ship was offered by name.
I’m 99% positive I saw Captain America’s shield fly across the screen at one point!
Did you see the Mach 5 before the race?

You know, those 'Things' sound awesome! Totally sold me on going to see the film! XD
But seriously, I have been wondering if this movie was worth going to see and for the nostalgia refs alone now make me want to see it so thank you once again, Andre, at least I know my nostalgia feels will love this film even if I don't like anything else about it and I am actually fine with that, been a while since we have had this trip down memory lane with Spielberg.

Awesome review
I loved the book and the movie even though the movie changed most of the elements of the book. I plan on seeing the movie again just to catch more pop culture references.
Love your t-shirt. Where did you get it?
Race? Fast & the Furious Maybe?
Honestly, as crazy as the race in Ready Player One is, Fast & Furious movies aren't that far off ha ha ha!
This was probably the best review I have watched for Ready Player One thus far. Excellent work!
9:35 i Say this way too much
They could've probably gotten the Millennium Falcon if they'd wanted to, WB managed to have it in The Lego Movie... plus, Spielberg could've probably swung it if they'd really wanted.
What is up notification squad
Sup.

This is no different than what we have seen with companies such as EA, Ubisoft, Konami and Activision. How they have switched from a quality gaming experience to a pay for play service. I felt the depth of this portrayal was appropriate enough to put on for the film. Overall, I feel that the film is just a reflection of the trends in digital media entertainment.
