- Antonia Apodaca, 93, and Cipriano Vigil, 76, are the two eldest and best known masters of traditional Northern New Mexico music. Over the course of an afternoon jamming together, they teach other new (but old) songs, play traditional favorites, and have a great time!

True New Mexican treasures. Thanks to both of you.
Wow the was the greatest video ever. Total masterpiece! Tears ran down my face as i watched the duo walk hand in hand at the end. I love my new mexican heritage. Two totally gifted artists. Arriba NUEVO Mexico!
Grandma Toni (my wife's grandma) was such a character. Will never forget the Saturday 10 years ago when she "took over" my then 5 year old's birthday party. I left the house long enough to get some extra refreshments and when I got back a fiesta had broken out :) She had enlisted a Presbyterian minister friend of mine (with his guitar) and a couple praise bank musicians who had stopped by. In my little 1500 square foot house I had 30 people singing with Grandma Toni. Good times
You were so fortunate to have someone like her in your family. I think most New Mexicans have at least one musician in their family.
I’m guessing you weren’t able to archive this moment on video or audio? Either way it’s a beautiful story.
@@BLFulle I think we do have a high influence of music in our state. My oldest son, Toni's great grandson, is studying music production in college now.
@@ertatta I think we do have a copy saved. Passing it on is important.
@@billbateman8920 My niece graduated from Highlands University with a degree in music last summer.
There's nothing like Northern New Mexico it's geography its
people it's music it's food it's architecture and let's not forget the women I wouldn't live anywhere else
Viva Antonia!!! ( I know she has passed away now, but her memory and legacy live on. So, I would rather say "Viva" to the spirit of this extraordinary woman.)
Just heard for the first time & it made me cry. It's music from my mother's time & my youth. Beautiful just Beautiful.
I keep stopping cause I am in tears. Brings back so many memories of my loved ones. Singing together y playing thier instruments old songs... Lord Have Mercy
Her son, Mr. Apodaca, taught at my elementary school Longfellow. He used to live on the same street as me WAYY back in the day. I remember meeting his mom at our chorus practice in his classroom. Great memories. She was a lovely lady then and still is now.
Beautiful, how are you Jessica, you really look nice 😊
Wow this made my day! Brought back memories of good ole days on the porch of my grandparents house (Cleofus and Anita Rougemont) in Pecos New Mexico!
Precious and timeless! I take every opportunity to play, sing and visit with my 86 year old Pop. We must preserve this tradition... It's our culture and our legacy.

I agree with those people that think that she is a living treasure!
There used to be a living treasure in Northern New Mexico, Medanales, New Mexico by the name Eusebio Martinez, a great musician and even sang la entrega de
los novios at weddings many years ago. He has since passed away. Don't know if he left any recordings.
Antonia Apodaca a talented musician and also a living treasure, we love listening to her music and also Cipriano Vigil. Hope that music is forever in Northern New Mexico. Keeps people happy and living longer.
Amazing NM Music and Artists from yesteryears
Wonderful music from my herencia de Sapello NM
Musica de mi gente
Antonia would make a wonderful entertainer at social events. She is truly a treasure of old Mexico and makes one wonder what she looked like 70 years ago when she may have started her career as a singer musician
.
John Andrews She was born and raised in New Mexico, her music is not from "old Mexico", it's Spanish language music from New Mexico. Has some similarities with Mexican music, but the distinctions are clear.
People from New Mexico are VERY different from people of Mexico. Most people are descendants from the original Spanish settlers from 1598. Both Vigil and Apodaca are founding family names. Look up Juan de Onate to get further information.
@@gennysama she was born Martinez and her husband was Macario Apodaca from near Mora. Imagine all the natural beauty that surrounded them as children growing up.
Very enjoyable music. Reminds me of the music that I heard as a child.
These two personify wisdom -- in their words, their attitudes, and their faces -- especially Antonia. RIP Grand Lady
Спасибо!!! Потрясающе!!!
How beautiful and special is this...I'm in my feels..I love this.
I love this so much..❤
Great music from great people from New Mexico god bless both ❤🎼🎼
Orale Cippy you still have it Love it GIto
me encanto que Las Canciones de ayer subrevivan a hoydia . Que preciosa Mujer Talentosa , me alegre mucho .
The song at 24:18 was written by Santiago Jimenez Sr. of San Antonio, so it's exciting to hear it recorded in northern New Mexico. Santiago Jimenez Jr. once mentioned having visited a woman in New Mexico who, like him, played accordion. I wonder if it was Antonia Apodaca.
I was just thinking as a San Antonio native how I appreciate and am more fascinated with the hispanic culture of NM. I guess we take for granted what is all around us & what we grew up with.
We have loved Antonia since 1985 when we first met her. Ken and Jeanie (Bayou Seco) have taken her to many places, Pt Townsend Washington, San Diego, Washington DC at the Folk Life Festival, Arizona and Texas, Wyoming, and many places in New Mexico. She is a trun treasure and we love her very much.
Ken, it warms my heart so to see and hear Antonia. I feel such love, like the songs she sings, everything about her, the treasure, the strength, the humor. Good times, good company, true hearts, totally amazing life
and her spirit is so refreshing, I forgot to include that her accordion playing shimmies and moves, her vocals and repertoire really turn me on, make me smile and give me inspiration
Kenneth Keppeler God bless her
I wonder if she knew my grandma- they about same age. She grew up Las Vegas too. Trujillo was maiden name and Josephine Martinez who had the landmark house lol we’d go visit every summer when I was a kid. This Toni reminds me of my grandma - they grew up same time same place . My grandma played the guitar too and loved to have so many pictures pictures on the wall. Her personality reminds me of grams.
Red pajamas. It she sang from her heart very talented woman!!!
I love this . I want to play my violin with you and learn the old rancheras.. God bless you .
That sounds so good
Awesome God bless her
Pretty sure he was my NM landlady's nephew and he sang at her funeral. (Florida Tafoya). What a special moment.

Seeing its name mentioned here gave me a piercing sense of homesickness, for a time as well as a place. I never saw this video before, was just looking for some accordion music. Now I’m a wreck. Thanks for uploading. Bless these artists and all their kin.
Me too, I'm from Poland in Warsaw City, how are you Donna 😊
Mi abuelo me enseño a tocar acordeon lo mejor del la vida
De todos los estados de la union americana Nuevo Mexico es que tiene mas mexicanos arraigados por cientos de años... no sacaron los gringos de sus tierras y casas pero si trataron 😂
We are not Mexican. We are descendents of Spanish conquistadors n indigenous tribes or our state
