  • Starting a Caterpillar D8H at the Chipping Steam Fair 2014; the 'donkey engine' turns the main diesel engine to start it, always a lovely sound to hear.

We see lots of tractors being started. Let's see that cat actually do some work.

Turn on gas valve to pony, start pony with choke, let pony run a couple seconds, Idle pony, engage pinion brake by pushing forward on lever, pull fully to the rear to engage pinion to flywheel, while adding throttle to pony, have main in decompression, turn over main for a couple minutes, throw into compression with main throttle closed... let engine turn over until you have oil pressure. If its cold out, run it longer to warm cylinders a little.... run pony full throttle and open main engine throttle, have a can of either to give main a little whiff if needed. start and leave at low idle until cylinders clear up a bit. At the same time as main is running on its own idle pony and either close gas valve until it runs out or turn off pony ignition. I have started them many hundreds if not thousands of times.... it works every single time if done correctly. Sad to see people doing some of this without relay knowing how to do it properly.

You forgot to hold your mouth right. That helps too.

I remember in 1962 when I was 4 riding on of those with my Dad eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in Gary Indiana. Good time I wish everybody was still around.

Just so you know, the starting engine warms the engine in three ways. The exhaust pipe of the starting engine is routed thru the intake manifold of the diesel engine. intake air for the diesel engine is warmed in this way. In addition, the starting engine turning the diesel engine with compression release lever in run position, pistons are being warmed by the heat of compression. The coolant inside the starting engine is circulated by the diesel engine water pump, coolant is being warmed. I see quite a few men starting these old engines, most put the diesel engine throttle into run position way too early the diesel kicks off one cylinder then two, meanwhile lots of cold diesel fuel is being injected into cylinders not hot enough to fire. I ran lots of these beautiful machines , the contractors had men as trainers who showed us how to do it.

Edward,,,the donkey motor exhaust warm the intake manifold main diesel engine???is correct??? The donkey motor is water cooled with his own coolant water or use the main water circuit coolant??? I think that the donkey motor may heat some minutes previous to couple to the main diesel engine

When you turn , with a cat and can thats cable run the crowd forward half way as you need slack in cable for turning the slack spool moves in real , old school dirt then and now .
