I was looking at some golden open acrylic for my mono printing because I’ve gotten so frustrated with how fast basic acrylic dries. Maybe this’ll be good-

@Tommy Ohlrich FWIW, I have Golden Open and Dina Wakley acrylics (DW in the squeeze bottles, not tubes). I live in CO and the humidity is very low, so paint dries FAST. I find the GO paints easier to work with for mono printing because they are so much more open. The DW acrylics dry much faster - after more than a couple passes of my brayer, the paint will get pulled up, so I have to be cautious. Although I don’t have the DW tubes I have the bottle acrylics, and I would expect them to dry faster than GO. One advantage I’ve found with the DW acrylics is that because they dry faster, more paint is left behind on my plate and I’m able to get grungy textures that I don’t generally get working with the GO paints (unless I make a point of letting them dry out before pulling a print). Of course GO is an artist-grade paint (and costs more), so that may be a factor. Have you tried adding a bit of water or the Golden Open thinner to your acrylics to see if that opens them up a bit?

@@sandrift someone told me pouring paints would work well because they don’t dry fast but they like bead up so it’s impossible to get a good coverage on the plate. But it’s a really interesting drop-net texture once it finally dries

@@nokiot9 That’s a really interesting idea - I’ll have to go look for some examples. Thanks!

I'd like to understand the purpose of the first colour.

Yes,, same here - unless you scratch into the 2nd layer (while still wet) or leave areas of the 1st coat showing, it really is redundant, not to mention a waste of paint.

What's the purpose of the first layer please?

If you noticed the 2nd coat, the blue darkened because of the black..it makes it looked more aged..
